Haiti lost its United Nation's Peace keeping mechanism in Haiti after the Earthquake hit.

Although UN peacekeeping forces numbers 10,000+ most are unable to control the very basic component of the country since most of its Command and control functions have been decimated.

One example of this is that the Filipino contingent of peacekeepers did not recieved orders from the UN Military general but from the AFP head in Manila to do what they can to rescue UN personels from the UN HQ.

The US brought in its own troops numbering 10000 and climbing with an intact Command and Control in an effort to control the country starting with the Airport.

Its sort of a mini invasion of Haiti with the USA military totally controlling the airspace and seaways of Haiti.

Port-au-Prince, January 19, 2010 – A Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) cargo plane carrying 12 tons of medical equipment, including drugs, surgical supplies and two dialysis machines, was turned away three times from Port-au-Prince airport since Sunday night despite repeated assurances of its ability to land there. This 12-ton cargo was part of the contents of an earlier plane carrying a total of 40 tons of supplies that was blocked from landing on Sunday morning. Since January 14, MSF has had five planes diverted from the original destination of Port-au-Prince to the Dominican Republic. These planes carried a total of 85 tons of medical and relief supplies.

“We have had five patients in Martissant health center die for lack of the medical supplies that this plane was carrying,” said Loris de Filippi, emergency coordinator for the MSF’s Choscal Hospital in Cite Soleil. “I have never seen anything like this. Any time I leave the operating theater I see lots of people desperately asking to be taken for surgery. Today, there are 12 people who need lifesaving amputations at Choscal Hospital. We were forced to buy a saw in the market to continue amputations. We are running against time here.”

More than 500 patients in need of surgery have been transferred from MSF health center in the Martissant neighborhood to Choscal Hospital with more than 230 operated on since Thursday. MSF teams have been working since the first hours after the earthquake and these cargo shipments are vital to continue their ability to provide essential medical care to victims of the disaster. In five different locations in the city, MSF has given primary care to an estimated 3,000 people in the capital and performed more than 400 surgeries.

“It is like working in a war situation,” said Rosa Crestani, MSF medical coordinator for Choscal Hospital. “We don’t have any more morphine to manage pain for our patients. We cannot accept that planes carrying lifesaving medical supplies and equipment continue to be turned away while our patients die. Priority must be given to medical supplies entering the country.”

Many of the patients have been pulled from the rubble of collapsed buildings are at grave risk of death from septicemia and the consequences of “crush syndrome,” a condition where damaged muscle tissue releases toxins into the bloodstream and can lead to death from kidney failure. Dialysis machines are vital to keeping patients alive with this condition.

Another two planes carrying a total of 26 MSF aid workers were diverted to Dominican Republic. MSF has successfully landed five planes with a total of 135 tons of supplies into Port-au-Prince. Another 195 tons of supplies will need to be granted permission to land in the airport in the coming days in order to continue MSF’s scale up of its medical relief operation in Haiti.

Project Medishare is accepting patients as fast as they come, patching up the non-critical and sending them home - more accurately back to the street. IsraAid has a mob scene on the road, which they were handling well. They are able to triage critical versus non-critical, which they have to turn away. It wasn't hard for me to get in. One "Shalom," they shook my hand, hugged me and brought me to Dr. Iky Ginsberg from the University of Miami, who was there coordinating with them. Unlike the UM Docs, the Israeli Docs have guns. My son-in-law Turbo (Wally Yoost) and I did too. Boca Raton seems dangerous compared to the Israeli compound in Haiti.

Project Medishare is almost ready to move into four enormous air-conditioned new tents that they just constructed. Hopefully IMSuRT (International Medical Surgical Response Team) will join forces with Project Medishare and locate on Medishare's massive property a new facility on Port-au-Prince Airport grounds.

I met the President and First Lady of Haiti at the current Medishare tent hospital and at the new Medishare massive site. They are both so grateful. The patients were so touched that their President and First Lady were visiting them in the UM-Medishare hospital.

There were so many massive cargo planes and soldiers flown in yesterday the airport looked like a war zone. Mostly US Military, but many from Canada and planes from Czechoslovakia, Finland, Ecuador, Brazil, Russia and so many other countries. This massive air operation was run flawlessly by TYNDALL AFB. The humanity of so many countries coming to the aid of Haiti is such a beautiful message compared to the psychotic wars and unrest in the other parts of the world.

Coordination is what is lacking now. People are dying like flies for no reason. Children.

Water and food is arriving, but it's not being distributed. There truly is no water or food for Haitian people right now. There's not enough water and food for the doctors and patients in the tent hospitals. The Haitian people are sleeping outside because they are scared of going back into their homes or buildings. At night, there were thousands of people sleeping in public parks (nothing like US parks), on the side of and in the streets. They would barricade areas off with rocks on highways and are sleeping on the rubble filled highways and streets.

Hopefully our Military, IMSuRT, Medishare, IsraAid and others can coordinate efforts and build a real hospital on the new Medishare site that the University of Miami built faster than the militaries of the various countries could build theirs. It would save tens of thousands of lives.

We need a large airplane that can hold more than 11 surgeons doing two daily flights to Port-au-Prince for surgeons and medical support. The doctors, rescuers, and medical support personnel are ready to go. We just can't get them there 11 at a time.

We, with doctors and four critically injured children on board, were greeted late last night by BSO in force - deputies/fire rescue/ambulances - BSO is a great Sheriff's Office! The Rock Stars from TYNDALL AFB that are handling Haitian Airspace with military precision and three ambulances from Jackson Memorial Hospital. BSO Launched one of their ambulances as well to Jackson Memorial. Heartwarming humanity.
