Thanks Needa for the encouragement!
And to Jonathan,
Thank you for the veiled compliment I detected in your comment! Although I was irked at first, really I can't be mad at how you opportunistically focused on one word in the whole essay, and to promote your book, blew it totally out of proportion in an effort to position yourself as some sort of expert on drugs in brazil. In spite of that, I actually I hope people buy your book and read it, they might learn something. I looked it up, and I might even buy it myself.

But I wrote this while I was living in a favela, it was my experience at the time, and I wrote to express the emotions I felt, both sadness at the conditions and wonderment at the resilience of the people. It was not meant to be a source of factual data, it could be argued that maybe I should have kept it in my journal instead of putting it on the internet. And I'm surprised it hasn't been taken down yet. But I hope maybe someone who has the power to change conditions for the people in Brazil will read this, and decide to ease the people's suffering there. They don't deserve it. - Justin

Do get your facts straight .at least. Heroin in brazilian favelas? absurd! There is no heroin trade in brazil. Never has been, not to speak of outside of a negligably tiny group of elite rich people...
i just published a book about the world of crack addicts in rio de janeiro called ''Narcisa" -- feel free to check it out if you want the real story... I am a recovering brazilian crack addict, very active in local recovery programs, so i do know whereof i speak. Such crappy mis-information takes away credibility from what, otherwise, might have been a pretty good -- albiet somewhat gringo-pomorphic -- piece of writing.
