The USA has enough mineral coal to supply all fuel needs for over 500 years. Coal can be made into motor fuel. Ethanol is a loser for the USA. The coming crunch is going to be in natural gas. Sources are too far from markets to use pipelines exclusively. Without natural gas there is no ag, since the main ingredient in fertilizer is natural gas. If Brazil wants to be first in something and make a lot of money, it should pour R&D money into new tech to move large amounts of natural gas cheaply by ship. - Ric

The president is right in that it´s shortsighted for the USA to get heavily into corn alchohol. The consumption of fuel in the USA is so high that if all the arable land in the US were farmed, it would only produce an estimated 55% of need. The largest moneymaker for the USA is food, not airplanes orcomputer chips. The only place in South America that comes close to the vast US midwest with millions of acres of deep rich topsoil is the Pampas in Argentina.

The reason the US doesn´t buy into Kyoto is that it is big enough no say no, having realized that it would be against its national interests to do so. Small rich European countries can sign it because they are rather post-industrial and they do have misguided views on many issues. Poor countries are for it because they sense a chance to get something out of it. Cadê o Meu?

Large developing countries like Brazil err in joining Kyoto because it is the first step in something they neither want nor need: a worldwide organization with the clout to tell nations what they can do and what they cannot, and the clout to enforce it. International courts, fines, pressure, and the end of nationalism.

How stupid is Lula !!!!!!

Then why does he even bother spending tens of billion US$ to produce oil and gas...in Brazil and elsewhere such as Bolivia and Angola....for example ?

And based on Lula stupidity, I suppose that even Bolivia and OPEC should stop exploring/drilling/producing oil and gas.

Lula can replace all the world energy needs !
Will ethanol also become your National drink ?
Lula already adopted it...daily !

Laugh...laugh...laugh ! - ch.c.
