I agree with Mrs.Mantega. The money that was robbed was not all that much, considering the earning capacity of her and her husband. The poor robbers treated everyone with courtesy and as the Brazilians say "com educação".In fact the thieves deserved more than what they got.In their prestigeous situation, the minister and his wife should have considered the stolen money of 20,000 Reais as a government hand out to the "pobres e humildes". However, what surprises me is that the Mantegas decided to complain to the Police about the incident (after almost 4 days),but refused to press further charges.

It does not give confidence to the tourists and the potential investors in Brazil, when they hear about the Supreme Court Justices being waylaid and the ministeres being robbed at their homes. The funny part of it that these important office holders do not want to press charges.Boy, I only hope that the situation down there doesnt deteriorate further. - Andy Murphy

Eliane told o Globo that the hooded gunmen were very considerate with everybody and even separated the house employees from the affluent guests saying that they wouldn't steal from people as poor as themselves.

Meaning, they took the employees into another room to thank them for the lead, and gave them their cut of the take. Nothing different here folks, move along. Just another day in Bananalandia. - Gringo Dingo

I've came to the conclusion that things are just not going to get better here during my liftetime. It's a shame, particularly for my daughter, but it won't be too much longer until I pack it in here. - bo

When I said that a mugging would make a conservative out of a liberal. In this case Diogo had it right in his Veja column: Guy gets his car stolen, the current Brazilian thinking is that the real blame goes to the guy who was affluent enough to have a Celta, not the robber. As long as this is the thinking, nothing gets better. - Ric

she said.....There was nothing serious !!!!!

Of course NOT ! So common and normal that the brazilians expecting a reduction in assaults, robberies, crimes........are SOOOOO wrong !!!!!!

Medias dont say the truth...of course !!!!! Brazil is a peacful country, there are no deaths squads, no criminals, no corruption, no need of police (why if there are no crimes), police just control the road traffics.

She may as well say that there is no poverty, no favelas ! Pure Medias inventions ! - ch.c.

"It's no use to keep talking about the case and exposing ourselves. What is needed is that Brazil improves the police, the economy, in order to reduce poverty and violence. There was nothing serious, it's the press that's creating factoids, writing lies. It was nothing serious, just this thing about violence, which is widespread."

LOL...wtf. These people are fucking classic idiots. Not to mention afraid of their own shadow! Nothing serious??

"Oh, no big deal, little carnaval, little caiporoska, samba, held hostage for 5 hours, more samba, ya know, brazil. Let's not make a big thing of this, mmm'k? We have a 6 year old boy that we don't want to traumatize, yes, that's right, he was sleeping throughout the entire ordeal...."

I mean what kind of examples are the very LEADERS of this country??? They don't want to get involved!! WTF does that tell you??? The very leaders of brazil just "give in" to the criminals. The war is over, it never began! Brazil is dominated, politicially and socially, but a BANDA DE LAUDRÕES! - bo
The robbery went on from about 11 pm of Tuesday, February 13, to around 4 am the next day, but the police were only notified on Friday. According to the minister's wife, Guido Mantega only didn't report the incident to the police because he had a scheduled meeting with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in Brasília.

"Guido needed to go to Brasília because he had a meeting with Lula. We only managed to leave the ranch around 6 am. We got to São Paulo at 9 am, without any sleep, and his flight was leaving at noon."
Normally you get robbed AFTER you've met with the president.....oh boy, things getting worse and worse! ;) - bo
