Steve 1: 'Dejame Solo' Benjamin Franklin 1776

'Mind your own business', Benjamin Franklin 1776

On 21 April 1787, the Continental Congress of the United States authorized a design for an official penny, later referred to as the Fugio cent because of its image of the sun shining down on a sundial with the caption, "Fugio" (Latin: I flee). The image and the word combine to mean "Time Flees". This coin was reportedly designed by Benjamin Franklin, and as a reminder to its holders, he put at its bottom the message, "Mind Your Business". This design had also been used on the "Continental dollar" (issued as coins of unknown real denomination, and in paper notes of different fractional denominations) in February of 1776.

Some historians believe that the word "business" was intended literally here, as Franklin was an influential and successful businessman. However, considering the full saying of "mind your own business," which would not have fit on the coin, it can just as easily be interpreted as a statement of privacy

Steve I: 'being putatively safe' and the life and times of Barry Goldwater

'My children were born in Hawaii. We lived 400 feet above the Pacific, you could almost see Japan. For 4 months a year we leaved on 100 acers on the corner of Ohio, Indiana, and Kentucky. There was a gate, that required a warrant to get on the property, a lake and two streams. It was covered in forest and rife with game. I am a philosophical naturalist. I believe Nature to be the greatest teacher. I taught my children to be themselves, and never do anything that you have to lie about. Life was not about things, it was about Nature and the ascertainable truths therefrom. I explained to them that God could be considered Gravity in its most profound sense of contemporary physics. As a stone dealer I had a binocular scope, that at three I introduced them to. I had a piano that the three of us improvised on. At 6 months they were swimming. It was my Eden, my Walden Pond, they were equals, I knew more about many things, but they were as human as I. The experiment is still in progress. One is studying nuclear engineering, and the other underwater photography. I have long ago sold Walden Pond, it had served its purpose, an aerie upon which to raise to great souls to set into the world. 2,000,000 miles I do not envy you, though I am most at home at 30,000 feet travelling 600mph. As to Barry Goldwater, he was the quintiscential hawk. He lost his bid for presdency because he suggested nuking the forests of Viet Nam, and was made a fool of in the liberal press. He would probably have used greater force with more efficiency in the current game of global chess. But one thing is for sure that he would not have tolerated the Sept 11th attack on the United States. I prefer my own solitude, I miss the museums and architecture of Paris, the cognac in the morning, and the smell of herring in Amsterdam in the morning, it too was a city of smells, ahh 'digustibus non est desputandum'. But as to Brazil let us use the metaphor of the insect exterminator's technique when there is an infestation. It is a massive and consistent use of agents to irradicate the infection. Similarly in medicine, massive doses of antibiotics are used initially to overwhelm the infecting agent. It is one solution. There are I am sure many others, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, amputation. We used to play a game my sons and I, it was shoot an arrow in the air as hard and as high as you could and it did not matter where it landed because it was your property. They also learned to throw a boomerang. I like your writing. We know what we have done, it is self evident that you do not merely know, but really know. - aes

Response to pretensions of intelligence

I doubt, dear AES that you travel more then the 200000 miles more or less that I travel each year. I have been in all the countries that you mention including 27 years ago in Somalia because of a college friend who' s father was a diplomat in Turkey. It was hardly interesting then and it is still is not interesting now, not to mention Djibouti with the Pepsi Cola bottling plant. As to singapore if you ever spent any time there you might have discovered (at least some years ago not now) if you traversed Orchard Road enough timer that Prostitution and meetings of various types barring drugs were never enforced as long as things were low profile, and names of John's were never published.

Amsterdam and Paris USED to be good before the EU started to standardize things. Amsterdam is basically sterilized now partially because of EU conformity and secondly because of the resurgence of racism in Europe not arguing any of the reasons. Paris, my favourite city is in the midst of becoming Guilaini-zed (which I am sure that you adore) and sterilized at the same time. Only in France the person is even more dangerous as Nicholas Sarkozy is a would be demagogue of the worst type, using the Le Pen philosophy when he chooses and then casting the old man aside when it no longer serves his purpose.

Back to Brasil, there is no paradise anywhere and no one should wish to live in such a place. I consider Brasil more satisfying to me then Europe as the EU is another corporatocracy beurocratic entity that I do not find to be appealing. As to your assertions about the 1960's, I am not a parent, but I cannot understand why parents of today do not wish their teenage children to enjoy the freedoms that we enjoyed. Many outside the US would say that this hysteria of fear about every other person being a 'predator' is aside from the horrendous witch hunt going on, it is creating a generation of social misfits that sit in fron of their computers all day long until the moment comes that they rebel and all get drunk. I suppose since the US knows (especially Republicans and moralists) beteer then everyone else that this is the way that society should run. If you consider the present regime in the US to be a model of 'balance' then you my dear sir do not appear to have travelled much.

I agree that the 1960's had many excesses as the crime in brasil is excessive, however to paraphrase one of the greatest Republicans of all time Barry Goldwater (who most likely would turn in his grave if he knew what his party has turned into under the current regime) extremism in the pursuit of liberty is no vice. According to one's interpretation of that is the differing factor here. You appear to believe that liberty means beingputatively safe at ALL cost, where I prefer to go to the other extreme and use the Spanish expression - Dejame Solo! (leave me alone), and no I have never used a gun even though i support the second amendment because it is of no interest to me, no more no less. - Steve1

The last Steve1 was not I but someone else. No I am not a first year college student. I am middle age and make a reasonably good income. The issue here is not conservative or liberal (I for one am libetarian but pro military at the same time). It is the issue of excessive law enforcement casting a pale upon society, especially in these times of absolutism and frightning technology which did not exist in previous times.

I cannot accept neither in the US nor Brasil massive raids which serve as a populist way to fan an already angry population, the majority which get their information from the idiot box and are just one or two steps up from illiteracy. As one of the greatest propagandist and campaign managers once said 'I could have told those sausage necks to jump out of the balcony and they would have done so!' Sportspalast 1941.

Just wait, I'm sure we'll hear all kinds of stories about what's been going on doing in the tri-border region over the last decade. Homeland security has been there for nearly 2 years now, I'm sure the brazilian authorities in that area are in it up to their necks. The U.S. gov't. is on record as saying the brazilian gov't. is "complicit", the brazilian gov't. says the U.S. gov't. is "over reacting". Let's see what they say when Hamas and/or Hezbollah decides to throw a bomb or fly some planes into skyskrapers in Sao Paulo. - bo

Did the First World screw the Third World? It is the nature of business that someone gets screwed.

You ask an interesting question. 'Did the First World screw the thrid world?'. First of all it is about business and business is about screwing someone, ideally it is a win win situation, but more often then not it is the one with the most money that comes out on top of the transaction.
Without law and order it is easier to take advantage in business deals, because the people you are buying from are more desperarte to sell.
And finally Brazil is not a Third World country. There is a psycholological concept called 'self fulfilling prophecy'. Act as if you are equal to any country in the world and you are. You get what you think you deserve not what you deserve. Demand respect, recognize your value, it is hardly Third World. - aes

I can see both sides. I beleive many of the problems are as a result of poverty, lack of education and hopelessness. I also beleive that there is some sort of system that is keeping the poor, poor.(I don't want to get into that). The State can be as corrupt as the criminals. The common working person gets screwed. They are victimized by criminal groups and
have difficulties progressing in society.

Nevertheless I don't see how you can have common criminals acting with impunity. I don't think these raids will solve the long term problem.
The safety of the community is the number one concern so I think that I support this measure, for now. These problems are the same in so many third world countries. Did the first world screw the third world? - jab

Pretentions to intelligence

Ah Singapore, where tennaged vandalism is punished by caning. Spare the rod and spoil the child. You are without limit, carpie diem and the hell with my children. One becomes less permissive when one acquires responsibilities for others lives.

I suggest you live in Amsterdam. It is the most human of all cities and a short trip to Paris the greatest of all cities. An environment of law is better than an environment of murder, rape, graft, corruption, theft. Giuilini was ex head of the FBI he was not interesed in middle he was not interested in maybe right or maybe wrong but right and wrong. In pursuit of right and wrong you achieve degrees. He made a great difference. There are my naive friend preditors, that are indiferent to your particular humanity. They would just as soon put a bullet in between your mothers eyes for her money as go to church and ask for repentence or smoke some crack.
They are socio paths, they exist. One of the things I like about the United States is that you can choose to arm yourself if you want. I assume you have never fired a gun, and have no idea how to use it as a tool, for that is what it is is a tool. A city living in the corruption of political graft is the U.S. under Tammany Hall in the U.S. a hundred or so years ago. If you dont like the sterility of Singapore try Somalia, be free live a little. There are no police in Somalia. You are looking for the 'eden of your mind' nothing you can think of has not already existed or does exist. But there is nothing so pleasing as a cop when you need one. A random soul that will help your dying self as your being robbed or murdered. I grew up in L.A. when in the 50's you were advised by your mother that if you were ever lost or in trouble to seek a Police Man. Then came the Sixties and Burn Baby Burn, and the Police are Pigs, and how hip it was to be free and not fascist. And then, and then, the commune evaporated, and the city called, with its light and running water. And with it the wonder world of crack, cocaine, morphine, speed, a world of chemical death. Think about it. These arn't pharmacists your injesting these drugs from, for all you know its ant poison. There are places on Earth that are less structured than others. Get up off your lazy ass and go get on a plane and transcend your fear of leaving home and find your paradise. That optimum degree of law and order and individual freedom. It is ,dear soul ,drugs that are the 'fly in the ointment'. There is very little crime or addiction in Holland. There certainly are no drug cartels. The more money you provide the criminal the more crime he is capable of manifesting. Tax the bastards and arrest them on tax fraud. Legalize Canabis and tax it, make money off it it is far less a societal detriment than Liquor of cigarettes. When children are forced to deal with criminals to buy pot it is not a good thing. They become alienated from police out of fear of their own arrest. We make, for little reason or societal benefit, criminals of our children. Here are the top ten villians to society.

My guess would be that you're young, maybe in your first year of univrsity, studying, of course, social sciences? Yer young, give it time, that creeping conservatism always gets you in the end. I don´t mean that you´re goin gto eventually turn into a Pat Robertson or Bill O Riely, but you will eventually loose your patience for those in society that have never cared about the common good, never cared about working, and never cared about responsibility. WHen you´re young, you see them as misguided lost souls in need of direction or a caring shoulder to cry on, after you´ve dealt with them for a few decades, you realize what they were all along. USELESS, LAZY and HEARTLESS wastes of time!

That's funny but there is some truth to it. I think because that "bad boy" image has become so popular where for the working stiff there is very little sympathy or respect. - jab
