Moral of this story is "A tie around the neck can also be used to hang ones self!!" . I havent heard this proverb for a long time and thanks for quoting it. I dont know if you understand our language well,but there is a word to describe such people .It is called "Pavão" and roughly translated into English it means a "Show off".Anyway,he is an American citizen who was arrested for shop lifting on U.S. soil and I am sure that the judges in Palm Beach would apply the local laws while judging his crime. BTW, I have some very nice American Jewish friends (Non Orthodax,as our friend AES loves to point out). They wouldnt approve of Sobel!! Take care ;D - João da Silva

The biggest problem with him is that he uses his American accent as a personal Marketing Tool! I hope after this ordeal,he would come down his high pedestal and speak our language like a native. You are probably correct, I could not imagine any other reason why he would butcher the language with an American Pronunciation? To me it shows a absolute complete lack of effort in even trying. I have learned one thing from him though. What I learned was how bad a person sounds speaking Portuguese with an American accent. It has encouraged me to better mine!! It is a very sensible comment and I do appreciate it. The Brazilians are the most tolerant people when a foreigner massacres their language.We dont mind the grammatical and spelling errors committed by them.We know that it is very difficult to speak Portuguese (or for that matter any language) like a native when one comes to this country after certain age. In the case of Sobel, he speaks very good Portuguese becauseprobably his folks still speak the language at home. I am sure he speaks English with the accent of a New Yorker and could speak Portuguese with a Lisbon accent. In my opinion, this guy for the past 35 years,played the roles of "Gotosão" and a big "Pavão", pissing on everybody in this country. I do not know much about Mr. Sobel, other than having watched him on T.V. I have learned one thing from him though. What I learned was how bad a person sounds speaking Portuguese with an American accent. It has encouraged me to better mine!! I believe the days of heroes are all but gone. Putting faith in any Government, System, Economy, Religion, Person etc. is futile. It appears the whole world is going mad! My real opinion is this: whom ever Mr. Sobel is or might be, whether Jew or Portuguese or whatever, I have sympathy for him. I havent heard about him recently until this news broke out and am quite surprised to know that he was arrested for stealing ties. I think the hard time has fallen on him like many other Brazilians. It is a pity that he had to resort to "Muamba",by smuggling into Brazil, stolen ties and reselling them.
