The Olympics (and the Pan American games I'm sure) would bring $ and jobs to Brazil even if its temporary.

That would be nice if it was correct. A friend of mine was offered a job that would pay him less than 50% that the market pays!!! He is an interpreter! Just imagine! - Armando R.

why in the earth your nickname is written in English?

I was not in Maracanã, I'm not even from Rio de Janeiro. If I was there I would accompany the others booing Lula, and next time there's a public event with Lula and I ever attend it, I will make sure to bring eggs with me.

I don't agree that people boo other countries athletes, that's shameful ridiculous and veery childish! All this stupidity is product of a country with a poor education. Demand from your politicians qualilty education to the people!

I've read at a carioca journalist say right after the event that the carioca people have revenged the fact that their state gave more votes to Lula amongst the others and after that Lula turned his back to the them. That gives me a bad impression of cariocas (it is said they are historically bairristas i.e. cares about their place exclusively) just like they (and Lula for that matter) begged people to vote for cristo redentor as a way they can have loads of tourists back. It would be better they demanded their mayor and governor that the city is safe, traffic dealers dont rule the city, that they keep the city clean, that they prevent pollution from killing thousands of fish in Lagoa de Freitas, that would bring tourists back (roll eyes).
Lula deserves to be booed, many of our politicians are thieves, we are not a nation of people who cares about politics, ok.
John, I disagree with you. Lula did not deserve to be booed. He did not deserve to be elected at the first place and since we are not a nation of people who cares about politics, we elected him ( I did not vote for him) and then reelected him! Then in an international event which cost almost 7 times the original budget (for the tax payers), the people who could afford to buy tickets for the games decided to boo him.

As for the rest of the comments, you made, I wholeheartedly agree with you and my congrats.

Brazil should care about politics its one of the biggest problems Brazil has to solve.

Well said Gomez and it coincides with the thoughts of John,me and many other people. We should not only scrutinize the candidates for the elected offices but demand more action from them, once they are elected. The biggest reason for that "incident" in Maracana was that those three big shots were competing for cheap popularity without having minimum interest in the welfare of the ones who elected (or rejected) them at the polls.

btw, you guys should participate more often in this forum. - João da Silva

I was at the Opening Ceremony......my impressions

Hi, I attended the opening ceremony with my wife, daughter, mother-in-law and grandson. My impressions.
Overall, I thought the whole ceremony and event went exceptionally well. Well orchestrated, etc. Booing the athletes from several countries was sad, save it for the politicians.
What amazed me, was I went to and from Maracana by taxi, it took less than 30 minutes to get there and ditto going home to zona sul, so the traffic management was just superb.
I thought overall it was exceptionally well done, the music and singing was very good, the right balance of homage to the athletes, officials, and link to the Olympic movement with the right amount of culture and Brasilian influence of singing, dancing, samba, etc. Well done.

PS. Rio is very safe at the moment, I hope it will continue to be like this, but I sense it cant continue at this level of military presence in the streets, its a shame, I love the feel of safety we have at present in the streets of Rio. - John Miller

Brazil should care about politics its one of the biggest problems Brazil has to solve. Solving that would solve so many other problems. So much easier to say than accomplish... Brazils politicians are thieves and in turn that makes desparate people do desparate things not because they are bad people, because they don't have a choice. The Olympics (and the Pan American games I'm sure) would bring $ and jobs to Brazil even if its temporary. The display at the Pan America Games could have destroyed that opportunity. Thats why I say too bad. Brazilian passion went to far in the wrong direction. But when it goes in the right direction, thats the irrisistable beauty of the Brazilian culture. - gomez

(Lula, Argentina, Bolivia, Venezuela and USA were not all booed at the same event, but they were all booed during the games. So as Sergio Cabral, Rio's State Governor. People think Cesar Maia, the mayor, orchestrated the boo, because Lula and Cabral were supossably taking credit for what they didn't do. Honestly, I doubt any of the three has the right to complain about the others, given what politicians, including them three, have done recently. But that would be another topic.) - John, brazilian

Human, brazilian and reasonable

A Brazilian male 24-year-old speaking here.

Lula deserves to be booed, many of our politicians are thieves, we are not a nation of people who cares about politics, ok.

But:

1) That was not the time or place to boo Lula (even if I felt good about people booing him).
2) Not all brazilians are stupid, politically careless or against free speech. Nor all americans are stupid enough to write "welcome to Congo" on the chalk board during international interviews, like some did. Every country has bad people.
3) It is shameful to boo Venezuela, Bolivia, USA and Argentina (more recently, after the Copa America, and not Pan-American Games, soccer finals Brazil 3x0 Argentina, Brazil laugh of Argentina's gymnastic team, who had no relation to the soccer team of a different competition!). Sports are not the occasion for political or ideological protests.

Let's not be blindly proud of our countries, nor blindly attack other people's nations.
Let's be reasonable and judge actions by their contexts.

That's to ALL: brazilian, US's, swiss and all others. - John, brazilian

I too have been around for years on this site and free speech has done quite well here even though the odd hacker and some miserable Brazilians has shown his or her real face. As you know Brazil is not an "Knowledge Based' country and never will be in this decade or the next few for that matter. - doggydaddy

Excuse moi ch.c, you're affirm Brazilians are crooks liers and cheaters but using your logic you probably would know that Americans are the biggest cheaters liers and crooks on earth?

I've noticed all your Americans friends defend you saying you are not American but swiss. You react so strongly when it comes to criticize Americans, perhaps your American friends, and yourself, are those cheater, crook and lier Americans?

Except that :
- in Romania the President was a dictastor, and in Brazil the President has been democratically elected......and re-elected !
- In Romania the President was hatred, and in Brazil the President is loved and second only to God. Whatever Lula lies are, you swallow them !
- in Romania they wanted a change for the better, In Brazil you want a continuation of higher corruption. The more someone is corrupted, the more he will be guaranteed to be re-elected from the people he stole the money ! More masochists than Brazilians....difficult to find !

Here is what a Brazilian (not me....for Magnus the idiot) said recently :
Rafael Kalil, 26, a singer in a Rio band "Even when there is a protest against the politicians, hardly anyone goes. You can't even get 100 people to go to a demo against a politician who's stolen $10m of public money."
