You can do it on Lan Chile, using one example. Read what Forest said about the West Coast (of South America). You could fly Los Angeles-Santiago-Buenos Aires. Remember that if one goes directly north from Belem, he ends up in Greenland....and if he goes directly south from Miami, all but a tiny bit of South America is to his east. - Ric

Uhhh, how exactly are you going to fly from the U.S. to Argentina without flying through Brazilian airspace...It's not like these planes (that were already in flight) could re-fuel in the air to fly around Brazil. - RH

Truth de Jour

The Legacy/GOL incident ostensibly involved a failure in communication as the cause of the accident. The Brazilian Air Force said there was no risk for the planes during the breakdown. Truth in Brazil it seems is more the Truth de Jour. - aes

Flight 951, coming from New York to São Paulo, returned to the Unites States after two hours in the air after being unable to contact Brazil. The same happened to another American Airlines flight from Washington and still another from Orlando. Continental ended up delaying a flight while waiting for Brazil to repair its faulty control center.

Huh??? Fly from NY, Washington and Orlando and can't make contact on the ground with anyone and have to go back?? It's not like it's across the street for god's sake.

This country is a joke. - bo
