I live in the south of Brasil and I dont believe we have a walmart down here. We do how ever have cheap terrible products that break. Walmart or no Walmart. It doesnt take a Walmart, in Brasil, to get "cheap" products...they are everywhere down here. - MIke

Bo, I agree with almost everything you say but your comments on the FDA are wrong. The FDA simply does not have the funding or manpower and inspects only 5% of the food containers coming into the U.S. In the past year alone there are numerous examples, ranging from the Pet Food crisis, to poisonous catfish from China, to tainted medicine...lead-based paint on children's toys from China. If you look into it, there is a major problem. The volume of Chines goods we consume is way too big for the inspectors to do even a partial job of monitoring.. A Wal-Mart container from China literally enters every 45 seconds...granted it is not all food but a lot of it is. I myself import a number of items (from Brazil) and in 5 years have only had one shipment flagged for an "intensive" inspection, which means they actually look at it. - Michael William

As far as Wal-Mart food..

no question there is tons of junk food sold at Wal-Mart, but also other food that is not. And, as far as the "quality" and/or safety of the food being imported, it may kill you in 40 years, but it won't kill you in ingestion, not in the U.S. anyway. The FDA is the most rigid of all food regulators anywhere in the world....and that is a fact.

Here in Brazil, they'll import Doritos with dogshit in them and you'll see them on your grocers displays! - bo

Wal-Mart do Brasil and PRC

Your comments are very interesting and informative (re Wal-Mart being 6th trading partner of PRC).Since you have lived in Brazil and know about it quite a bit, probably you know that Wal-Mart already has a strong presence,as they bought BIG a acouple of years ago adn now their plans are to set up these 28 new units, under their own brand name, to import junk from PRC-like garments, shoes, etc; I really dont believe that the Brazilian consumers are going to be benefited, but the Brazilian industries are going to be wiped out.Wal-Mart will obviously be the big brother in fostering an ever lasting fraternal trade relationship between Brazil and PRC. Of course, with the blessings of the Brazilian "Political entrepreneurs" (as Conceição fondly likes to refer to them). The renowned Brazilian brands (and that of the other multi national ones) will sell their goods through Wal-Mart,but all their products made in PRC. This is a trend I have been noticing for some years now. I think Ch.C was very sarcastic (in his usual way) when he talked about poor people getting the benefits out of Wal-Mart.The governemnt, instead of cutting reducing IPI,ICMS,modify the labor laws, etc; opted to import the Chinese made junk.

As for your warning about the Brazilians, eating imported Chines food,it is going to happen. This morning I was reading an article about the Philipines and Indonesia having problems with this kind of food stuff (Rabbit Candy?) and PRC retaliating by banning their products. I think that our "political entrepreneurs" are malleable enough to close their eyes and permit all sort of junk food to be imported into Brazil!

It is a good topic to be debated and hope to receive comments from others.

Ah, I dont think that Ch.c will be using Wal-Mart do Brasil to market his Blue Brazilian coffee!! - João da Silva

Yes, Wal-Mart is an extension of China industry. I admire the management for being so efficient but am amazed that so many people actually buy the shit they sell. Shopping there is apalling, yet the average ignorant American shopper does not understand that saving 50 cents on a bag of potato chips comes at a very big price. The people who say they are so patriotic in the interior of the U.S. are directly supporting the PRC regime - ignorant. I strongly in favor of free trade as long as there are some balances put in place, but Wal-Mart is anti-market, unchecked, monopolistic.

I have been to Wal-Mart once just to see. That was enough. It is disgusting. - Michael William

Wal-Mart is good for poor people? Maybe in China.

Wal-Mart imports $22 billion of Chinese goods, making Wal-Mart the #1 importer of Chinese goods. Wal-Mart, if it were its own country, would be China’s sixth largest trading partner. Just wait until Wal-Mart really starts growing in Brazil and see how much good it does for the low income population. Sure, they will be able to buy large volumes of processed foods at a low price just like the Americans do. Then they will wake up 50 pounds overweight, with diabetes, and still think their life is great because they can buy cheap processed items.

Don't make the same mistakes that lower middle-class America made!

Following on from Bo's comment, Wal-Mart has a service whereby illegal Mexican immigrants in the U.S. can wire money directly to Mexico Wal -Marts that family members can pick up and presumably spend there.
It's called Western Union and MoneyGram. - bo

You got the natural gift of "imbuing a superiority complex in others" (including my good self). I had to rush and consult a dictionery to decode the sentence, though!!. However, I must confess that I am of the opinion that even the old ones like my humble self have lots of things to learn from youngsters like you ;D

If Shakespeare was alive,he would have been very proud of us both (though he would have resorted to Oxford dictionery and failed to understand what we are talking about)!

Anyway,it was good to hear from ya. - João da Silva

who just happen to be strolling the aisles with a couple hundred thousand reais stuffed in their underwear. - conceicao
Brazilians, don't shop at Wall-Mart. You will become fat like most Americans. If at all possible, Wal-Mart sources from China so you will wind up supporting your country's biggest competitor in various key market categories..

I feel sorry for any Brazilian company that enters into negotiations with Wal-Mart. You will be dictated the price for your products even if it forces you to lose money, which you will do, for the promise of Wal-Mart volume.

Michael, your message is understood loud and clear, as the previous one you sent! The last time I was in U.S., it was pathetic to enter into Wal-Mart. All the products made in PRC.You made a good point, Michael.Keep posting. - João da Silva
