The FDA simply does not have the funding or manpower and inspects only 5% of the food containers coming into the U.S. In the past year alone there are numerous examples, ranging from the Pet Food crisis, to poisonous catfish from China, to tainted medicine...lead-based paint on children's toys from China. If you look into it, there is a major problem. The volume of Chines goods we consume is way too big for the inspectors to do even a partial job of monitoring.. A Wal-Mart container from China literally enters every 45 seconds...granted it is not all food but a lot of it is. Of course, with the blessings of the Brazilian "Political entrepreneurs" (as Conceição fondly likes to refer to them). The renowned Brazilian brands (and that of the other multi national ones) will sell their goods through Wal-Mart,but all their products made in PRC. This is a trend I have been noticing for some years now. I think Ch.C was very sarcastic (in his usual way) when he talked about poor people getting the benefits out of Wal-Mart.The governemnt,instead of cutting reducing IPI,ICMS,modify the labor laws,etc; opted to import the Chinese made junk. As for your warning about the Brazilians, eating imported Chines food,it is going to happen.This morning I was reading an article about the Philipines and Indonesia having problems with this kind of food stuff (Rabbit Candy?) and PRC retaliating by banning their products. I think that our "political entrepreneurs" are malleable enough to close their eyes and permit all sort of junk food to be imported into Brazil!
