Brazil's Housing Deficit of 7 Million Might Double PDF Print E-mail

In less than 20 years, Brazil's housing deficit can nearly double from its present lack of 7.2 million residential units to 12.45 million in 2023. In an attempt to diminish this difference, the Ministry of Cities estimates that an annual expenditure of around US$ 4.52 billion (12;44 billion reais) is necessary.

Brazil's Minister of Cities, Olívio Dutra, declared that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has already given its go-ahead to the idea of excluding investments in housing and basic sanitation from the calculation of poor and developing countries' budget surpluses.

Brazilian stocks moved tentatively higher, as investors refrained from significant buying prior to the U.S. Thanksgiving holiday on Thursday. Brazil's market edged up on the central bank's plans to buy back debt. Brazil's benchmark Bovespa Index added 27.87 points, or 0.11%.

Sugar mill owners and business leaders in the states of Paraíba and Pernambuco, Brazil, have donated five tons of hard brown sugar bars (rapadura, a favorite Brazilian candy) and 124,000 liters of mineral water to Haiti. The goods will be distributed by Brazilian soldiers there who are part of the UN Transition Mission.

Farmers from the southernmost Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul who are members of the SebraExport Fruit project, a fruit export program coordinated by the Brazilian Micro and Small Business Support Service (Sebrae), are going to export 190 tons of strawberries, mulberries, raspberries and myrtles.
