Slaves
Two teams from the Special Mobile Inspection Group of the Ministry of Labor and Employment freed 90 workers this week who were living in slave-like conditions. In the Airport Ranch, in the municipality of Sinop, in the state of Mato Grosso, 53 persons were discovered living in subhuman conditions. |

Brazilian stocks closed with solid gains on a modest inflation reading. Brazil's benchmark Bovespa Index jumped 255.30 points, or 1.00%. Stocks managed to brush off morning weakness to end firmly higher, after the central bank decided after yesterday's close to raise the key Selic interest rate to 17.75%, a 50-basis point increase. |

Brazil's harvest in 2004/2005 should attain 131.9 million tons of grain,
according to the National Supply Company (Conab). This volume represents a 10.7%
increase compared with the 2003/2004 harvest, which came to 119.1 tons. |
