Slaves

Two teams from the Special Mobile Inspection Group of the Ministry of Labor and Employment freed 90 workers this week who were living in slave-like conditions. In the Airport Ranch, in the municipality of Sinop, in the state of Mato Grosso, 53 persons were discovered living in subhuman conditions.

Brazilian stocks closed with solid gains on a modest inflation reading. Brazil's benchmark Bovespa Index jumped 255.30 points, or 1.00%. Stocks managed to brush off morning weakness to end firmly higher, after the central bank decided after yesterday's close to raise the key Selic interest rate to 17.75%, a 50-basis point increase.

Brazil's harvest in 2004/2005 should attain 131.9 million tons of grain, according to the National Supply Company (Conab). This volume represents a 10.7% increase compared with the 2003/2004 harvest, which came to 119.1 tons.
