The Stars of Brazil's 2008 Auto Show: 100% Nationally Designed Cars PDF Print E-mail
Written by Alexandre Rocha

GM's GPix Several multinationals in the auto industry have elected Brazil, for some time now, as the hub for development of new cars. This way, among the main novelties of the 25th International Automobile Trade Show of São Paulo, which opens to the public on the October 30, are prototypes and variations of vehicles developed exclusively for the country.

One example is that of General Motors, which is presenting concept car GPix at the fair, a crossover, a passenger car with off road characteristics, to serve as inspiration for future models by the brand in Brazil and in other countries.

"The design of a car is its differential. It is what generates passion in this industry," said the global vice president of the company, Ed Wilburn. GM has in the country one of its 11 global design studios.

Fiat, in turn, presents the FCC II, Fiat Concept Car II acronym, totally created at the company development hub in Betim, Minas Gerais. The objective of the prototype is to provide entertainment while driving without affecting the environment.

With an 80 HP electric engine, with autonomy for 100 kilometres, the car may be recharged on 220-volt outlets. The body is made out of natural fibers, and other light and renewable materials were used in the structure.

Ford, which named its stand Ford Design Hall, presents concept variations of the Ka compact vehicle, baptized Beauty and The Beast. The former is a convertible model of the car, the latter a sports version. "This shows the versatility of the Ka," stated the company president for the Mercosur, Marcos Oliveira.

Ford has in Brazil one of its five global product development centers. The objective, according to Oliveira, is to create new models and technologies turned to the specific needs of the region.

Renault, in turn, is showing Sandero Stepway, an off road version of the compact car that is the brand's sales success in Brazil. Although the original model is not exclusive for the country, a new version was developed especially for the Brazilian market. Apart from sporty characteristics and accessories, the car has higher suspension to face more difficult routes.

The also French Peugeot is presenting two "Show Cars" made in Brazil. They are variations of the Peugeot 207 prepared for racetracks, and they may be used in the Peugeot Cup, a national competition.

Other novelties at the trade fair to start being sold now or in the near future are the new Honda Fit, the new Ford Focus, the Chevrolet Captiva, and new versions of cars that are already in production and imported vehicles.

"With the passing of time, Brazil has become a very interesting market," said Evaristo Nascimento, the event director at Reed Exhibitions-Alcântara Machado, the company that organizes the fair, pointing out that in this edition a greater number of vehicles is being released than in the last edition, in 2006. The organizers hope to receive over 600,000 visitors to see the products shown by the 170 exhibitors.

The carmakers also presented a greater number of vehicles powered by alternative fuels, especially biofuels, which use gasoline, ethanol, or any mixture of the two, already very popular in Brazil. In the area of imported vehicles, the highlight is the Chevrolet Volt, a hybrid vehicle with an electric engine and a fuel generator that recharges the batteries with the vehicle in movement.

What cars were designed in Geneva?
written by Ric, October 28, 2008
You keep saying that Brazil never designed any cars. What about the Corcel, C-14, Veraneio, Interlagos, Santa Matilde, Puma GTB, Agrale, Gurgel, Fissore, SPII, Urutú, Jeg, Troller, that´s just off the top of my head, there are more.

Take a SPII or a Puma to the states and the VW guys just go nuts. Let it go.

Dear Ric !
written by ch.c., October 28, 2008
I never ever said in my life Brazil never designed any cars !!!!!!

Designing the outside of a car is not that difficult for concept cars !

I am talking about BUILDING A CAR including the engine etc etc !

If that is as easy as you pretend....VERY GOOD....!!!!! Where ARE the BRAZILIAN MANUFACTURER(sss) ?????????

Please spell their name....not their car modelS, dear Ric such as Bric ! smile !!!!!

And the VW guys just go nuts !!!!! Doubtful ! Volskwagen is the only car maker ON EARTH that has seen its stock price more than QUINTUPLE IN ONE YEAR.......while all the other ones have seen their stock prices---PLUMMETING....!!!!!
You dont really know what you are talking about....at times !

In Geneva, we dont design cars. But we have the Largest International cars show...in EUROPE, wether you like or not !
http://money.cnn.com/galleries...eva/8.html

So much that many cars manufacturers WAIT the Geneva expo to reveal their latest models to the world.
I am not talking about CONCEPT CARS only, but the NEW MODELS !!!!!!!!!
People come from all over Europe, North Africa, Middle East, Eastern Europe, Russia !

As to Swiss cars, of course we built them with a 15 years advanced vision if you did not know :
"The original concept for the Smart car was devised in the early 90’s as collaborative effort between Mercedes-Benz and the Swiss watch manufacturer Swatch who were known for their array of colorful pop art designs. In 1997 the Smart fortwo debuted at the Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA). From its introduction, the Smart received acclaim as a clever and trend setting solution in the automotive sector, environmentally friendly and one of the safest micro cars in the world to drive."

later Swatch sold their shares to Daimler-Benz. And now it is A BIG BOOM all over Europe due to the concept of a CITY CAR, compact and fuel efficient !!!!!! But dont go on vacation with it ! smiles !

For Swiss Concept cars certainly far superior to your cheap ones
- Swiss Rinspeed Senso with Natural Gas Porsche Engine
- Since 2000, IDEA Institute has been part of the Swiss multi-national Rieter Group with its headquarters in Winterthur, Switzerland, around 15,500 employees worldwide and 2007 sales of 3.93 billion Swiss Francs.
- Lucerne, Switzerland - The Swiss Mindset AG company has announced that it is planning to produce its super lightweight eco- car fitted with hybrid drive, two gull-wing doors and narrow 22-inch wheels by 2009. Designed by Volkswagen's former design director, Murat Gunak, who was appointed Mindset CEO, the prototype features design aspects from the hatchback and coupe with a long bonnet and rectangular rear with glass roof.
- Rinspeed Splash Hydrofoil Car
- Rinspeed eXasis Concept Car: glass-free transparency
- Rinspeed Rinspeed zaZen concept cars autoshow Geneva Motor Show 2006
- Rinspeed Squba concept - Car Design News - Those wacky Swiss concept car makers at Rinspeed are at it again,
- The swabian tuner LUMMA DESIGN continues its series of refined premium vehicles through CLR 500 RS.
- Weighing just 1,984 pounds, the Weber Faster One (seriously) is powered by a 900-horsepower twin-supercharged V8 based on the same 7.0-liter LS7 found in Chevrolet's Corvette Z06. Weber boffins created the Faster One's six-speed sequential gearbox and AWD system in-house. The latter system can send up to 36 percent of torque to the front wheels. The company reports zero-to 100 km/h (62 mph) in an astonishing 2.7 seconds, with a top speed—yet to be verified by a third party -- of 248 mph. Those number put it in range of the $1.4 million Bugatti Veyron, a car whose so-so looks are augmented by the brilliant engineering exercise beneath its skin. Not so with the Weber.
Either you love the design or think it'd be better suited for the prequel of John Travolta's "Battleship Earth," should, heaven forbid, such a movie be made. And it'll take quite a quantity of love, and money, to take home the Weber Faster One. The company is asking 1.6 million Swiss francs ($1.5 million) for the honor. There's probably a myopic banker from Zurich kicking the tires this very minute."
- Christopher Reitz has been appointed to the top job at Alfa Romeo, replacing Frank Stephenson as Director of Design.
A relative of Wolfgang Porsche, Christopher Reitz graduated from Art Center Europe in Switzerland-
- - AND ALSO OTHERS

And dear (B)ric lez me surprise you even more, once more
"the Art Center College of Design in Switzerland – the oldest car design school in the world."
Sorry Buddy !!!

When you dont know....just ask !!!!!! smiles
And if you have the money for one of the Rinspeed model, dont hesitate, they are not only CONCEPT CARS, but YOU CAN BUY THEM !!!!!!

written by ch.c., October 28, 2008
A few months ago, a BBC series on world best EXTRAORDINARY cars, they have not ranked the names you may have in mind, but a
Rinspeed model !
They even added...NOTHING COME CLOSE !
You see contrary to self boasting ourselves like brazilians continually do, I prefer to tell you what OTHERS are saying.
That is all the difference.

Last but not least in Sao Paulo City, with a population of well over 8 millions they expect 600'000 visitors ! Right or not ?

In Geneva for 2008 it was
" Die Bilanz des 78. Internationalen Automobil-Salons fällt äusserst positiv aus : Mit rund 715'000 Eintritten haben die Organisatoren Ihr Ziel überschritten.Sie bestätigt einmal mehr die Wichtigkeit dieses internationalen Salons der zu den „Top 5“ weltweit zählt."
For a population of around 300'000 for the city, 450'000 for the whole state of Geneva.

" Again these are NOT......MY NUMBERS...TO CARESS MY NAVEL !!!!!!!!!

Another surprise (surprising even me, if true)
"About the 2008 Geneva Motor Show
The Geneva Motor Show is the only European International Auto Show to be held annually. The 2008 show is the 78th occurrence and takes place at the Palexpo convention center in Geneva, Switzerland. With the show’s home country neutral both in politics as well as in automotive production, a wide variety of car companies bring their wares to this show, including such exotic brands as Pagani, Koenigsegg and Spyker. The Geneva Motor Show takes place every March and is widely attended by visitors from all over Europe."

In Geneva we dont build cars, we have the World Largest Center for Nuclear RESEARCH, called the European Nuclear Research Center...or CERN in French ! With thousands and thousands of the world best scientists, experts on the subject !!!!!

Last but not least, during the Geneva car show, there is not an hotel room available, 60 to 80 kms radius from Geneva !

Enjoy (B)ric !

Weber Faster One what a joke looks like a ski boot, looks like a Bugati that got punched in the mouth, looks like a Countouche but it aint no Patek Phillip and the clear as glass bobsled you made or the under water Bondian Swiss wet dream are laughable. You should continuing making Swatch watches and leave true design to the Italians or the French, or the English you will never make a Bugati or an Aston Martin. . .Maybe some of your designers at the Nuclear plant can design are car to get you 'back to the future'. . .we will be waiting for the Swiss entry at Daytona and at Monte Carlo. . .I think Brazil has some of the greatest 'pilotas' in the world and Switzerland some of the fastest men on sleds. . .keep trying one day you may be admitted to the Max Plank Institue For Evolutionary Anthropology and when you are done there you might mosey on over to Carl Jung's school and get your frozen ego out of your ass.

A faulty electrical connection from the Swiss no, a synaptic gap onset of national intellectual Alzheimers

CERN releases analysis of LHC incident
Geneva, 16 October 2008. Investigations at CERN following a large helium leak into sector 3-4 of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) tunnel have confirmed that cause of the incident was a faulty electrical connection between two of the accelerator’s magnets. This resulted in mechanical damage and release of helium from the magnet cold mass into the tunnel.

Dear Dumbass AES
written by ch.c., October 29, 2008
You better review what CERN is and what I wrote :

i said " With thousands and thousands of the WORLD best scientists, experts on the subject"
Most of the technology and machinery are NOT made in Geneva or Switzerland !
Where is then the Swiss reputation affected ?????

Furthermore Helium is NOT dangerous at all...if you did not know ! There was Nooooooo special alert either in Geneva or in France. I underline France, because the "circle" is underground but mostly in France grounds !

Dear Double Dumbass AES,
What about the "Brazilian meteorit" that created a HUGE crater in SP around 2 years ago, during the underground metro construction !
Brazilian materials and technology of course.
Here is what said the director in charge of the construction in his resignation letter "In view of the budget allocated and the quality of materials delivered, it was simply an accident waiting to happen"

Ohhhhhhhh you have a short memory...as usual ?
No problem, here is a nice picture for your eyes of your new Public Swimming Pool to train your aqua divers, when you will have filled the gaping hole with rains floods :
http://enr.construction.com/news/transportation/archives/070129a.asp
Were you secretly preparing the Brazilian Center for Nuclear Research ?
Sorry, much much too small. the CERN circle is over 20 kms IN DIAMETER AND DEEPER THAN YOURS !!!!!!

LAUGH....LAUGH....LAUGH...LAUGH

Concerning the Swiss cars, concept cars and Cars Show !

1) When your SP car show will have visitors 1,5 times the SP STATE POPULATION, You then will be equal to the Geneva Car Show, when per capita ajusted !!!! Not during the next century GUARANTEED !!!!!!!
2) And this is provided you have an annual car show, not only one every 2,3 or 4 years !
3) And this will be only equal when at least 50 % of the visitors are FOREIGNERS not only locals !!!!! Not until the next MILLENIUM....GUARANTEED !
4) Quite funny that we have such a LARGE cars show, despite we have no large auto makers, local or foreigners !!!!!!!
Who else could do that ?
5) Concerning the cars you like or dont like, feel free. What is sure is that none of ours are within your budget anyway !
I have said nothing from what I know if I like or not the Brazilian designs ! But they are ALL cheap cars, because you cant produce
PREMIUM quality of anything EXCEPTIONAL AND OF HIGH VALUE ! Including Coffee, shoes, orange juice, sugar, flip flops, T-shirts, shirts, pants or whatever textiles or whatever you produce !!!!! And forget even knives or watches or drugs, except cocaïne !
You dont even have the technology to build a Brazilian car, with your own money and your own cmpanies ! Indians at least bought Jaguar and Land Rover.
Therefore this became THEIR cars because they PAID for them !!!!! And they also have their OWN LOCAL automakers SUCH AS TATA !!!!!

Nooooooooooooo....such things....in Brazil...as usual !

China has at least 25 LOCAL AUTOMAKERS COMPANIES...outside of the foreign auto makers !

Brazil....ZERO ! Simple as that !

Russia has also some LOCAL COMPANIES as auto makers !

Conclusion : of the BRIC members, ONCE MORE..... BRAZIL IS THE WORST...BY FAR !

Prove me wrong if you can, for once !!!!!!!!

At least the RIC companies have made investments, NOT BRAZIL !!!!!!

Thus telling me you are more advanced than India, China or Russia for the auto makers is DEAD WRONG ! YOU HAVE FOREIGN CARS MANUFACTURERS that make cars IN Brazil, But Brazil has Nooooooo Brazilians cars makers !!!!!

Sorry for you TRIPLE DUMBASS !!!!!!

Concerning Patek Phillip it is Patek PhillipE, but coming from an ignorant like you, you are pardoned.
PP is an average watch makers, CHIC BUT NOT EXCEPTIONAL !
There are much better than that such as Breguet and many others !
But again this is out of your budget anyway !

May be you should try to eventually have a car leasing of one of our Rinspeed costing US$ 1,6 million at 35 % interests rate financed by a Brazilian Bank !!!!!!!!

In the meantime, enjoy your cheap cars......that must be with "higher suspension to face more difficult routes" as the article above stated.
And feel at unease in your 95 % of UNPAVED ROADS !!!!!!

You see having only 5 % of paved roads has something very beneficial for the automotive industry :
- Far more maintenance costs and newer parts replacement
- SHORTER car life
- faster replacement needed

And all this at 35 % interests rate !!!!!!

Yesssssss...you and me..... for once....HAVE TO APPLAUDE BRAZIL...PROWESS !!!!!!

  • Poor Women from Northeast Brazil Learn Joy of Meeting and Helping Each Other

Joined hands The small, coastal town of Condé is located just a twenty minute's drive from João Pessoa, the capital of Paraíba. The Northeast of Brazil has historically been a place of encounter and mixing between peoples. For millenia groups of indigenous people fished, farmed, migrated and sometimes fought along this large, fertile area.

  • Ahmadinejad's Visit: Iran, Honduras and Brazil's Hypocrisy in Dealing With Them

Ahmadinejad and Lula The Brazilian diplo-MÁ-cia (bad diplomacy) carries on its accelerated course towards the non-acknowledgment of human rights, although sometimes it takes pleasure in saying that it does precisely the opposite. The visit of Iran's president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, is another example of a diplomatic omission that verges on hypocrisy.

  • Lula Is About to Fulfill His Wish of Getting His Good Friend Chavez in Mercosur

Lula and Chavez On July 4, 2006, representatives of Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay met in Caracas to sign the protocol for the entrance of Venezuela into the Southern Common Market (Mercosur). After two and a half years, the protocol was approved by the legislative bodies of Argentina and Uruguay, and as of now it may be only days away from being ratified by the continent's economic megalith, Brazil.

Child labor in Brazil One hundred and eleven years after Brazil abolished slavery, the number of workers deprived of their freedom is still huge. • Some Humility Would Do Lula Good. On Human Rights Brazil Has Long Way to Go

A prison in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil On November 7, 2009 a few friends and I had an opportunity to take a look inside a Brazilian jail outside the city of Rio de Janeiro. We were able to take some amateur footage of our experience on video (see link below). It's no surprise, of course, that the typical Brazilian jail lacks some of the functionality of those in North America or Europe, but our experience that day was quite shocking.
