For Chavez the Fight Now Is With the Brazilian Senate PDF Print E-mail
Written by Newsroom
Friday, 19 December 2008

Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez The Brazilian House of Representatives approved the incorporation of Venezuela to the South American economic bloc Mercosur, but a further and tougher hurdle lies ahead: the Brazilian Senate, where several members have anticipated their disagreement, according to sources quoted by the media in Brazilian capital Brasília.

The Venezuelan Mercosur adherence protocol was debated in Brazil's Lower House Wednesday until early dawn Thursday, December 18, but was finally passed with 265 votes, 61 against and 6 abstentions.

Venezuela's incorporation to the trade group made up of Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay was formally agreed by the founding member governments on July 2006, but so far has only managed approval from the legislative branches of Argentina and Uruguay.

The delay has led to diplomatic disputes between Brazil and Venezuela, with President Hugo Chavez going as far as accusing the Brazilian Senate of back stepping on the issue following "instructions from Washington."

In the Brazilian Senate the government benches and opposition are fairly distributed so the approval is expected to face greater obstacles.

During the Lower House debate opposition members reiterated their criticism of President Chavez and voted against the Mercosur initiative arguing that in Venezuela "basic liberties are not guaranteed."

Opposition also argued that "Mercosur can't accept Venezuela, until Chavez is out of office" because he will impede the block from advancing "by insisting on an ideological agenda."

However, government deputies countered saying that delaying Venezuela's incorporation will only be harmful for Mercosur development and the integration process of Latin America.

Representative José Genoíno said that with Venezuela in, the group will have a population of over 250 million, cover an area of 12.7 million square kilometers (4.9 million square miles) and a global trade of US$ 300 billion.

The bill now passes to the Senate, but given the summer recess it's not expected to be incorporated to the agenda until late February, after the Carnaval celebrations.

SHAME SHAME SHAME!!!! OUT WITH DICTATORS!

DEEPLY DISTRESSED WITH THE SHAMEFUL APPROVAL OF VENEZUELA'S ENTRY IN MERCOLSUL, I SHALL SOLELY QUOTE AN EXCERPT OF AN EARLIER, RELEVANT ESSAY, POSTED HERE SEVERAL MONTHS AGO...
Venezuela, which recently managed to established a mini-alliance for itself, composed of a faithful list of smaller, poorer client states (Cuba, Bolivia, Ecuador, and Nicaragua), undoubtedly intends to assume the lead (if not control) of the region, by a more discrete version of the “good-old” revolutionary ideals, currently labeled as “Bolivarian”, whose ultimate goal is to spread its Rosy (but still radical) regime throughout the region, thus allowing Caracas in the end to be the New Latin Moscow of the Southwest…

Many of the "Old Hippies" mentioned in Ric´s "Sad Story" and that were bitching about freedom of speech 4 decades ago are now in power (along with the junior members of their dynasties) and they forgot what they preached. In fact, they are more vengeful . smilies/angry.gif

Hi Augustus,

As customary, I went through your blog today and to my pleasant surprise, I found an article about Gen.Osório which was full of correct historical facts. I was also pleased that you quoted Gen.Gilberto Figueiredo who gave an interview on a TV Network a few months ago. Though on the TV, he sounded modest, his display of intelligence was unquestionable.

For our friends who would like to read your article, I am posting below the link (which you forgot to do):

Congrats again.

Not only those in power....but including the average citizen.
Why dont you refer to the recent blog on Marananho.
Most Brazilians DONT tolerate when one idiot (ME) says the sad truth on Brazilians Corruptions...AT ALL LEVELS.....REGARDLESS OF WHO IS WHO....and regardless of what GANG THESE POLITICIANS BELONG TO !!!!!

These gangs as I clearly stated are at war for the power, but if one outsider criticize them, then they become only ONE GANG AGAINST THOSE CRITICIZING THEM !
Even the citizens are for one gang or another. Criticize one or the 2 gangs and then the once criticizing is told how BAD I AM !!!!!

And then the idiot and junkie Ricardo Amaral comes out with HIS DYNASTY OF CROOKS AND CRIMINALS, and proudly and boasting refer his name to the ones who have pillaged, raped, killed, governed, enslaved Brazilians.....for over 200 years !

Right or not ?????

But,.,...but....FORTUNATELY there is a much bigger DYNASTY, UNFORTUNATELY NOT ANY BETTER THAN THE RICARDO AMARAL DYNASTY :

The..........DA SILVA.......DYNASTY !
Millions and millions of them, far more than the small AMARAL Dynasty.

Let me underline : there is one I hate and one I like !
Joao is the "error" (exception) within the largest Brazilian Dynasty.

MADOFF TOO !
What was obvious for a few.....ended up the way we know it....THESE DAYS....to the detriment of those who disagreed...of course !

With my cynical statements and views, I am very happy that Geneva IS..... FULL OF MADOFF INVESTMENTS !
Sorry...sorry...NOT IS...BUT..... WAS...!!!!! smiles
You just have Nooooo idea.
Remember my repeated statements......common sense will always prevail...at the end ! the longer they waited...the bigger the hole became ! A HUGE...GAPING HOLE !

My personal estimates are at around US$ 10 - 12 billion from Geneva alone ! Could be more when everyone will have raised their
hand !!!!!!
But puting things in perspective, this remains less than ONE PER CENT of the overall money managed in Geneva !
Still, some old and renown independent portfolio or fund managers had a HEAVY exposure on the amounts they managed...to the scam ! I am not talking about banks......even if they too were involved.
30-50-70 % OF MADOFF EXPOSURE...ON WHAT THESE INDEPENDENTS GUYS MANAGED WAS NOT UNCOMMON AT ALL !!!!!
Therefore it was first a bad year... due to the worldwide situation overall...and then just before Christmas.....a not so nice surprise from MADOFF SCAM !
Whoaaaaa ! Ouch

The..........DA SILVA.......DYNASTY !

Joao is the "error" (exception) within the largest Brazilian Dynasty.

It was a humorous comment and let me clarify :

There is a Mr.da Silva dynasty that is growing and becoming powerful. Then you have just Silva commoners some of whom are highly educated and hard working, but do not form any dynasty. I belong to the latter category and have no regrets for not belonging to any dynasty!

BUT....BUT.... you would be happy to hear that a member of Mr.da Silva dynasty is going to be one of the "Rulers" of a city in our state. You would feel more pleased to know that this person went to Lausanne to study (Dont know if the subject completed the studies, but never mind ,a couple of years of self imposed exile in Lausanne is indeed a qualification for the task ahead).

In a couple of years time that city should have an exact replica of Lake Geneva and as well as human made mountains with artificial glaciers. So please be prepared to send your rich Arab friends here for tourism. smilies/wink.gif

  • Brazil Engaged in Another Olympics: Reshaping Its Image Before Games Open

Economist's cover on BrazilBrazil received a huge boost in its international image with its selection as the host of the 2016 Olympics, but it was really just the cherry on top of the overall recognition of the country's ascension to the ranks of one of the world's most important countries. Now, as it finally takes its place on the world scene, there has been a great deal of concern about what kind of image Brazil hopes to project, now that the world is really paying attention.

  • Iranian Leader's Visit to Brazil Takes the Gloss off Lula's International Image

Ahmadinejad meets LulaThe only good thing to say about the visit to Brazil of Iran's president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, on Monday November 23, is that it was mercifully short and lasted less than 24 hours. Ahmadinejad had his picture taken being hugged by president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva who gave him a warm welcome and said Iran had every right to develop nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.

  • Poor Women from Northeast Brazil Learn Joy of Meeting and Helping Each Other

Joined hands The small, coastal town of Condé is located just a twenty minute's drive from João Pessoa, the capital of Paraíba. The Northeast of Brazil has historically been a place of encounter and mixing between peoples. For millenia groups of indigenous people fished, farmed, migrated and sometimes fought along this large, fertile area.

  • Ahmadinejad's Visit: Iran, Honduras and Brazil's Hypocrisy in Dealing With Them

Ahmadinejad and Lula The Brazilian diplo-MÁ-cia (bad diplomacy) carries on its accelerated course towards the non-acknowledgment of human rights, although sometimes it takes pleasure in saying that it does precisely the opposite. The visit of Iran's president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, is another example of a diplomatic omission that verges on hypocrisy.

  • Lula Is About to Fulfill His Wish of Getting His Good Friend Chavez in Mercosur

Lula and Chavez On July 4, 2006, representatives of Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay met in Caracas to sign the protocol for the entrance of Venezuela into the Southern Common Market (Mercosur). After two and a half years, the protocol was approved by the legislative bodies of Argentina and Uruguay, and as of now it may be only days away from being ratified by the continent's economic megalith, Brazil.

  • Denying Education is the Other AIDS. And Brazil Is Guilty of Inflicting It

Children from a Diadema band Some sectors of the fight against AIDS have suggested that Thabo Mbeki, the former president of South Africa, committed genocide through his absence from the fight against the illness in his country throughout his two terms.

  • Child Labor Went Down in Brazil, But 5 Million Underage Workers Are Still Way Too Many

Child labor in Brazil One hundred and eleven years after Brazil abolished slavery, the number of workers deprived of their freedom is still huge. They raise cattle, produce charcoal, sugar cane or timber. Some of them, most undocumented Bolivians, work in basements of small apparel factories in São Paulo and other metropolis.

  • Some Humility Would Do Lula Good. On Human Rights Brazil Has Long Way to Go

A prison in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil On November 7, 2009 a few friends and I had an opportunity to take a look inside a Brazilian jail outside the city of Rio de Janeiro. We were able to take some amateur footage of our experience on video (see link below). It's no surprise, of course, that the typical Brazilian jail lacks some of the functionality of those in North America or Europe, but our experience that day was quite shocking.

  • Brazil's Amazon Rainforest Policy Is a One-Way Road to Disaster

Trasamazonian road in BrazilDepletion of the Amazon Rainforest is not a new concern facing environmentalists, biologists, ecologists, and a growing number of the Amazonian indigenous peoples. For decades they have feared for the fate of the world's most biologically diverse and species-rich hothouse.

  • Geisy, Brazil's Miniskirt Student, Should Try US College Next Year

Geisy Arruda from BrazilGeisy Arruda made history this week in Brazil, but for all the wrong reasons. What began as a poorly planned fashion statement has become a worldwide tale. Geisy decided to wear a pink mini-dress to her private college in São Paulo state, and after that, all hell broke loose.
