Brazil Won't Sit Around Waiting for Crisis, Says President Lula PDF Print E-mail
Written by Paula Laboissière
Tuesday, 30 December 2008

President Lula of Brazil After reviewing the year 2008, Brazilian president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva stated that the year has been good, but not great for Brazilians, and that during the period the country has grown "economically" and "strongly."

He said that by January 20 he is going to introduce new proposals for encouraging economic growth, and that the government "is not going to sit around waiting" for the "vicious effects" of the crisis to damage the country.

In his weekly radio show "Breakfast with the President," Lula called attention to the fact that almost 2.2 million jobs were created up until October, which, according to him, generated greater revenues and enabled the expansion of trade.

"This means that Brazil had a good year. I am not going to say that it has been great, but it has been a good year. Only in the last quarter did we have problems - already a result of the world crisis - mainly due to lack of international credit."

The president said once again that, despite the international financial crisis, which he described as "the worst in post-industrial history," Brazil is better prepared to face the effects of instability at Stock Exchanges.

"We possess reserves, we have a strong domestic market. The entire government is prepared so that, in early 2009, we may start carrying out consistent work, counting on all the help we may need, so that the economy may continue to grow," he stated.

"I am convinced that Brazil should look at the crisis as an opportunity for us to do the things that we have not done yet, so that we may prove that the dynamism of the Brazilian domestic market is going to allow for our economy to continue growing.

"Whereas some countries in the world are in recession, Brazil might grow a bit less than previously forecasted, but it will keep on growing and generating jobs," the president concluded.

It would be nice if he had listed "the things that we have not done yet". BUT....BUT.... he is supposed to unveil a "pacote" on Jan 20th. Lets wait and see.

PACOTE AND ROBBING HOOK PROMISES !
written by ch.c., December 31, 2008
- Selic rate may fall more than expected (so far "experts" predict 12 % for year end 2009)
- Interests rates on loans now for individuals are at around 13-15 on mortgages, 35 % on cars, 55 % on Consumer goods, and around 200 % on overdrafts will fall..."A LOT"...to around 10 % for mortgages, 25 % for cars, 35-40 % for Consumer goods, and 130-150 % on overdrafts.
- Interests rates for small and medium size firms now at around 42 % may come down to 30-35 %

IS THAT NOT A BULLISH VIEW FOR MY PREDICTIONS ??????

Happy 2009 Brazilian Pacote !

And in my poor country WITHOUT PACOTE we are NOW at 2,875 % for mortgages, 4 % and less for cars, 8 to 12 % and even less for Consumers goods, and ????? for overdrafts (I dont know but could be around 13-18 %)

Last but not least, in 2009 most emerging countries government will return to the International markets to borrow US$.
Some countries already did recently such as Mexico, Peru is looking right now, and even Mantega said recently they are waiting the appropriate time. MANY MORE....will follow...no doubt !
Some emerging countries also already knocked the IMF door in 2008, begging with their 2 knees down. More beggars will surface in 2009.

And in April 2009, the 4 countries, Brazil included, who got a US$ 30 billion helping hand from the U.S. Fed will have to
pay back or renew their loan !

Viva Robbing Hook ! No doubt we will hear from him regularly of how good HE is !!!!
He is so superior....at robbing YOUUUUU !

Viva Lula...viva Lulaa...Viva Lulaaa

You couldn't be more right. Some may not like your style, but for the mostpart, your posts are truthful, statistics are accurate, and can even understand your style as if one isn't "in your face" then some brazilians will actually try and tort what you stated to say that it is something positive!!! smilies/grin.gif smilies/grin.gif smilies/grin.gif

My goodness, "better prepared". Well we would certainly hope so. It would be kind of difficult to be prepared any worse than in previous years.

Happy New Year Ch.c
written by AES, December 31, 2008
Both banks are scaling back because of the global credit crunch. UBS, which got a $59.2 billion aid package by the Swiss government and central bank this year, has slashed 9,000 jobs and posted almost $49 billion in losses and writedowns, more than any other European bank. Credit Suisse said Dec. 4 it plans to cut 11 percent of its workforce and scrap bonuses for top executives after losses of $2.5 billion in the previous two months.

Joao "then some brazilians will actually try and tort what you stated to say that it is something positive!!! "

Yess sure like Robbing Hook and his gang, AES the junkie and Ricardo Amaral the descendent of the largest Brazilian Dynasty !

Smiles

AES
- Just look at how much Citibank lost and many others U.S. banks. Far more than the 2 Swiss banks you are referring to.
- And sorry but we have 330 banks....HERE !!!! None seized by the government contrary to many countries.
- UBS firings. Sure most of them will be in London and New York....if you did not know. Same for Credit Suisse.
- UBS $ 59 billion package. Yesssss it was around 53 billion to provide liquidity and shield away toxic debts, and 6 billion for
additional working capital. A VERY SMALL AMOUNT WHEN COMPARED TO OTHER DEVELOPED COUNTRIES.

LAST BUT NOT LEAST :
- Contrary to many U.S. banks, Irish Banks, U.K banks, German banks, etc.......NO SWISS BANK YET HAS BEEN TAKEN OVER OR SEIZED BY THE GOVERNMENT !
- No banks merger, forced or friendly...HERE IN SWITZERLAND !
- While several Brazilian ALREADY OWNED STATE BANKS...... WERE TAKEN OVER BY GOVERNMENT CONTROLLED OR GOVERNMENT OWNED BANKS !
- Who in your view are in better shape...the Swiss banks...or the brazilian banks that were FORCED to merge ?????

DEAR IDIOT AES
jUST LOOK AT THE SWISS CURRENCY....IT SAYS A LOT ON THE COUNTRY FUNDAMENTALS :
- The US$ is near an ALL TIME 40 years low against the Swiss Franc
- The Euro is weakening against the Swiss Franc
- The Brl is collapsing against the Swiss Franc
- The British Pound is collapsing as much as the Brl does against the Swiss Franc.

And idiots like YOU AES are 100 % sure SWITZERLAND HAS more problems than the other countries !!!!!!

Ohhhhh and by the way dear IDIOT AES : the Swiss Stock Market (SMI) has also been the World Most Resilient in 2008 within the developed nations....wether you like it or not !

Ohhhh and by the way..... for a last one : the Capitalization of Swiss Stocks are much higher than the "gigantic" liliputian Brazil !
Funny when Brazil has population 24 times larger than Switzerland !!!

Ohhhhh and a third last one : OUR UNEMPLOYMENT RATE IS WELL BELOW 3 %. Will it "jump & explode" to 4 % ? May be and/or why not.
That will remain a small fraction of the USA, EU or BRAZIL...... UNEMPLOYMENT RATE !!!!!
Especially a small rate when compared to Brazil where you have 60 % of the labour force, unemployed or not, partially or totally, in your informal economy ! That is where YOU HIDE YOUR TRUE UNEMPLOYMENT RATE....MUCH MUCH MUCH HIGHER THAN YOUR OFFICIAL STATS....TOTALLY MANIPULATED !!!!!
A few months ago, the city of RECIFE had 60 new jobs openings. 5000 applicants were queuing in the street to pass the entry tests !!!!
Enjoy your viewing...if you dont trust me....as usual :
http://expatbrazil.wordpress.com/2008/10/17/lib-why-return-home-after-six-months/

Anyway....Happy New Year !

And as special winch to Joao on Sarko & Carla :
"The Brazilian newspapers reported this morning that Sarkozy was threatening to leave Bahia and Brazil if the press didn’t back off. He says he and his family deserve some privacy. The press says he doesn’t want the folks back in France (in recession) to see him having a good time on a beautiful tropical beach."

Guess why now the Bold & Beautiful people around the World enjoy so much...SWITZERLAND !!!!
Privacy is respected. They could have gone shopping quietly, or for dinner in whatever restaurant...and not being bothered by the medias, fans or ordinary people !
Twice I was seating next to Phil Collins, once next to Yoko Ono, a few times to Alain Delon and we even had friendly discussions that THEY started. I also skied and had drinks with Prince Charles...years ago !
They always feel happy here because they can be the ordinary people they cant be elsewhere.
When my kids were very young, My ex wife and kids sat next to Charles Aznavour and his wife at a restaurant. They started the discussion and even at the end paid the bill..... for my family !!!! True. Smiles.....

We dont live in the same planet...for sure !

The press didn't back off and he made good his threat and left Brazil yesterday! Good riddance!! He has no business to complain about the Brazilian press as they are no different from the French Paparazzis that hounded Princess Diana during her private visit to Paris where she died in that car accident. The problem with Sarko is that he was on a state visit to this country , made a huge noise about it and then decided to take a week´s vacation on a "tropical beach" with his very pretty wife. I don't think he was worried about his privacy nor the French public opinion. Being a "Pavão", he was jealous that Carla was getting more attention than he.

It is a pity that the Brazilian Newspapers did not publish more Pictures of Carla so that I could post some more for your appreciation. I am sure she would not be wearing such skimpy clothes while skiing on the Alps. smilies/cheesy.gif

You too have a great 2009. The same to all our fellow bloggers.

written by ch.c., December 31, 2008
But why not ?
In the Alps chalets, many have inside swimming pools ! smiles.
And in a few areas they have therms...enjoyed by everyone, locals or tourists. No problem to be inside the swimming pool even if it is outside.

This said you are 100 % right on the French Paparazzis.
But let me underline that for the Sarko official visit to Brazil, your medias have published more articles/pictures than the French medias.
Better yet.....even when Robbing Hook was in France, Brazil also mediatized far more than French medias.
Looks like that the Brazilian Inferiority Complex is hidden in your permanent self boasting !
You could even see this on the Brazilian rethoric to Sarko complaint : "The press says he doesn’t want the folks back in France (in recession) to see him having a good time on a beautiful tropical beach."

Because let me say this on Brazilian beaches :
Most Brazilian beaches are dirty, full of garbage and not cleaned.
Most French beaches are great, with not as much garbage, because cleaned EVERY NIGHT by mechanical cleaners during the mid and high season.
That is one of the reasons high income or wealthy people will enjoy far more the French beaches rather than Brazilian beaches.
Just look at the stats. France has the World Highest Incoming foreign tourists !
Paris remains the most beautiful city on earth for tourists. France has also some trendy ski resorts but not as good as in Switzerland but they have beaches that we dont have.

Finally, once more just guess why the Bold & Beautiful people around the world enjoy so much being in my country.
Except if you are a country President for security reasons, no one needs bodyguards for privacy reasons to keep away the medias, fans or ordinary people.

Hey hey !

Edith Piaf !
written by ch.c., December 31, 2008
Here is a coincidence when I was in my early 20 years :

I had a boss. A real Play Boy. French in his mid 30's.
He had a Mistress in Paris, quite wealthy.
For a week end he told me to go with him in Paris to enjoy life with him and his Mistress.
When we arrived at the appartment, he then told me this was the ex Theo Sarappo appartment.
Appartment paid by Piaf...of course...and where they resided while together.
Theo Sarappo was loved by Edith Piaf. But he was much much younger than her.
He even became (may be he was already...I dont recall) a singer himself due to the Piaf love affair !

Funny coincidences you talk about singers you like(d) very much.

This was in 1971. My first trip to Paris ! Smiles

I still like them. I don't know if you have seen the movie "Saving of Pvt.Ryan" , the main actor being Tom Hanks. In that movie, the American G.I´s hear the songs of Edith Piaf over the radio and Tom Hanks had to explain to them who the singer was.

Edith was a great singer and we have a CD with her famous songs. What a great voice that lady had. Saudades of the late 60´s and 70´s (Minus folks like Delfim Netto smilies/angry.gif). smilies/cry.gif

No I did not see that movie.
Another coincidence with my youngest daughter, now 25, was when she was 7 or 8.
She fell in love with Piaf songs, and could sing at least 6 or 7 of her songs from A to Z.
Strange and funny for a child !

That is wonderful. Seems to be a talented girl. Does she still sing? We have a CD with the title "Edith Piaf-30 Anniversaire". It contains 20 songs. Your daughter must sing some of them.My favorite is "Padam,Padam...."

Why is it that President Lula won't face the fact that he needs to be focusing on bettering the general population, rather than feeding the rich and wealthy. Brazil is really in a state of poverty and the gap between the rich and poor keeps growing.

The visit of Iran's president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, is another example of a diplomatic omission that verges on hypocrisy.
