Brazil's Lula Wants to Save President Obama from the Mean Washington Machine PDF Print E-mail
Written by Newsroom
Tuesday, 20 January 2009

Barack Obama Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the president of Brazil, says that he would like to talk with the new American president, Barack Obama, before the "government machine" gets hold of him. Lula also expects that the US leader "would change his vision on Latinamerica and acknowledge the advance of regional democracy."

Lula da Silva made the statements during a meeting with his counterpart Hugo Chavez in the Venezuelan province of Zulia where he signed trade agreements and anticipated the Brazilian Senate would soon approve the incorporation of Venezuela to Mercosur.

"I haven't had a chance to talk with Obama and undoubtedly we must have a discussion before the government machine gets hold of him," said Lula. And looking to President Chavez he added "and you know Hugo that these machines are very powerful and if we don't fight against them they devour us in a short time and then we don't do what we should have done."

"These machines are capable of making us into something different to that what we were thinking about when we took office," underlined the Brazilian leader.

"Let's hope Obama is enlightened by God and gives him the sufficient intelligence and sensitivity to realize he must solve this crisis as soon as possible, that he can't let countries of Latinamerica and the Caribbean which depend exclusively on exports to the US, to suffer because of the crisis."

Lula also urged that the developed world "finds a quick solution before the crisis could again plunge the developing world into stagnation as happened in the eighties and nineties with the foreign debt crisis".

The Brazilian president further on anticipated that the Senate of his country would be approving at the latest in March, Venezuela's incorporation as full member of Mercosur.

"This is the will of Mercosur and Venezuela", he underlined.

"Many times we celebrate international agreements and the legislative process takes longer than we would like," he admitted.

President Chavez said the announcement was "wonderful news and so will be the results." He pointed out that with Venezuela inside Mercosur, bilateral trade with Brazil would certainly increase from its current US$ 6 billion annually.

Mercosur in 2006 was accepted as Mercosur member, but ratification from the Brazilian and Paraguayan congresses is pending. Uruguay and Argentina's legislatives have already voted the incorporation.

Speaking of government machines.....

Aside from Lula's self aggrandizing remarks, Obama was well enmeshed into the (abject) Chicago political machine. I think it will take a little more than prattle from Lula and Chavez to break that kind of pattern pattern. smilies/cheesy.gif
In the Democratic debates, Obama said that all trade agreements will be renegotiated. We'll see what that portends for LatAm.

BO is so right with RECIPROCITY !
written by ch.c., January 21, 2009
But then Yesssssss...I agree...that Obama, the EU, and Japan, should follow Robbing Hook strategy.
Namely charges 100 % import taxes on goods...MADE IN BRAZIL. Such as for cars, buses, trucks, etc etc.

Facts :
When Ford or GM America want to export cars to Brazil, there is a 100 % import tax...in Brazil.
But not on Ford or GM cars MADE IN BRAZIL !
Therefore this reduce the jobs in America and increases jobs in Brazil.
This is UNFAIR TRADES PRACTICES.
In my view, the developed nations should close ALL THEIR car plants in Brazil, and increase their
productions...AT HOME !

Furthermore
Developed nations should also tell Brazil : if THEY want we buy THEIR grains, shoes or whatever, then at their turn to invest into developed nations.
BUY LAND, PRODUCE GRAINS OR WHATEVER with YOUR COMPANIES AND YOUR MONEY...... in developed countries and market YOUR PRODUCTS locally in developed nations and internationally just as Cargill, Bunge, ADM, Monsanto, Syngenta, Nestlé, Deere, Fiat, etc etc etc have done in Brazil...for decades !
This would also produce jobs and taxes in DEVELOPED NATIONS !
And we will see HOW GOOD THE BRAZILIANS COMPANIES ARE AND HOW GOOD THEIR PRODUCTS ARE !

The USA, EU and Japan should start with ethanol. Be it from corn or sugarcane. Or biodiesel from soyabeans or from any type of materials Brazilians R&D companies decide.
As said buy land HERE with YOUR MONEY, build ethanol plants HERE, following rules HERE, labor rules and wages HERE, produce ethanol or biodiesel HERE, and market it HERE, and export it FROM HERE !
WAS/IS this not what you expect from us....in your country ????
Then we should expect no less from you...... than the same !

This is FAIR RECIPROCITY...BY DEFINITION !

But...but...dont worry ! You can keep in Brazil, the oil refineries, pulp mills, steel mills.
We obviously dont want YOU pollute OUR countries !!!!!!!
Therefore we are still going to IMPORT a few things from you. VERY FEW THINGS !

Stupid question : if you want to build Brazilian cars in the developed nations, could a Brazilian spell the name of that
car manufacturer ? Same question for advanced and superior seeds, tractors or harvesters, trucks, dozers, cranes, tires, drugmakers, insurances.

Eventually your Bra-santo or Brazyngenta could even make a killing here in developed nations, if they develop
coffee beans that could be grown HERE ! Just as Monsanto and Syngenta seeds make a fortune...in Brazil !!!!!
Because without these companies controlling 90 % of Brazilians grains seeds, what could Brazil do...in grains production
and competivity ????? Not much...by definition ! Otherwise these foreign companies would not control 90 % of the grains seeds, if their products were inferior to Brazilians produced seeds....also by definition !

HURRAH BO, HURRAH BO, HURRAH BO !!!!!!
Boooooo Luli, Booooo Lula, Boooooooo Lulo

Furthermore to BO "can anyone take a human being seriously that is talking about DEMOCRACY in the presence of HUGO CHAVEZ!!!!"

Same question for Democracy in Brazil with Robbing Hook !
Because In Venezuela AND Brazil....vote buying is NOT illegal,
despite what their constitution written on toilet paper rolls clearly states.
Who really cares what is written on toilet paper rolls in South America ?

Thus believing that Brazil is a better Democracy than Venezuela is simply incorrect, until proven otherwise.

At least in Africa they dont even have toilet papers. Thus no one can say it is illegal...as per their constitution.
Somewhat the same in most Arabs nations. They rarely even have elections...just erections.
And believe it or not, they dont use toilet paper either !
Therefore they should also not be big importers of Aracruz and Votorantim paper pulps or toilet paper rolls.

These two regions could be a big growth exports for Aracruz and Votorantim, starting from near ZERO export sales !

Actually, our rulers could take some lessons from BHO instead of trying to save him from the "Mean Washington Machine". For example he has ordered the Freezing of salaries of the White House staff. Our "Leaders" can take volunteer cuts in their salaries and it will show the people how serious they are in confronting the economic crisis.

IMHO, the reduction of SELIC rate to 12.75% announced today is indeed a half assed measure that is certainly not going to help the Businesses nor the Consumers. There were plenty of demonstrations by the Labor unions in various cities demanding that SELIC rate be lowered to make the credit easier.Banco Central obliged them by cutting the rate by 1 full percentage point! It would be gullible on the part of the 650,000 people who lost their jobs in December to expect to be hired back because of this measure. I think that the job losses in January and February are going to be as high as December, if not higher.

Another thing I liked about the New White House site is the creation of a blog where not only the Americans can participate, but also the entire world. isn't that smart?

To conclude my comment, I have only one advice to our President and that of Venezuela: Please do not be patronizing towards BHO. Our distinguished fellow bloggers "VinnyCarioca" and "DnB" made some interesting remarks which make lots of sense.BHO does not need any lesson from anyone from outside.

Least of all from the likes of Lula and Chavez!!! I mean come on João, Lula saving someone? He can't save himself nor his own country, let alone the president of the united states! In a country that regularly censors the press, is "protectionista" to the extreme, where laws simply go unenforced. I've said it before and I'll say it again, for those that attempt to compare Brazil to the U.S.A in ANY aspect, political, economical, social, etc, it is simply absurd and so far detached from reality that the only purpose that I can see it serves is to make some pridefully, ignorant, brazilians feel that they're NOT "less than".

  • Poor Women from Northeast Brazil Learn Joy of Meeting and Helping Each Other

The Northeast of Brazil has historically been a place of encounter and mixing between peoples. For millenia groups of indigenous people fished, farmed, migrated and sometimes fought along this large, fertile area.

  • Ahmadinejad's Visit: Iran, Honduras and Brazil's Hypocrisy in Dealing With Them

Ahmadinejad and Lula The Brazilian diplo-MÁ-cia (bad diplomacy) carries on its accelerated course towards the non-acknowledgment of human rights, although sometimes it takes pleasure in saying that it does precisely the opposite. The visit of Iran's president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, is another example of a diplomatic omission that verges on hypocrisy.

  • Lula Is About to Fulfill His Wish of Getting His Good Friend Chavez in Mercosur

Lula and Chavez On July 4, 2006, representatives of Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay met in Caracas to sign the protocol for the entrance of Venezuela into the Southern Common Market (Mercosur). After two and a half years, the protocol was approved by the legislative bodies of Argentina and Uruguay, and as of now it may be only days away from being ratified by the continent's economic megalith, Brazil.

  • Child Labor Went Down in Brazil, But 5 Million Underage Workers Are Still Way Too Many

Child labor in Brazil One hundred and eleven years after Brazil abolished slavery, the number of workers deprived of their freedom is still huge. They raise cattle, produce charcoal, sugar cane or timber. Some of them, most undocumented Bolivians, work in basements of small apparel factories in São Paulo and other metropolis.

  • Some Humility Would Do Lula Good. On Human Rights Brazil Has Long Way to Go

A prison in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil On November 7, 2009 a few friends and I had an opportunity to take a look inside a Brazilian jail outside the city of Rio de Janeiro. We were able to take some amateur footage of our experience on video (see link below). It's no surprise, of course, that the typical Brazilian jail lacks some of the functionality of those in North America or Europe, but our experience that day was quite shocking.
