Chavez Asks Brazilian Lula to Tell Obama to Stop US Lies and Cynicism PDF Print E-mail
Written by Newsroom
Friday, 06 March 2009

Presidents Lula and Chavez Hugo Chavez, the Venezuelan president, said he has authorized Brazil's leader to raise the subject of Venezuela in talks with President Barack Obama this month. Despite the change of government, Washington/Caracas relations remain strained.

However Brazilian president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has maintained friendly relations with US leaders (both Bush and Obama) and with populist Chavez.

Lula is scheduled to meet President Obama on March 17 in Washington and Chavez said that the Brazilian leader "has been calling me, worried by the US statements that have continued coming out, attacks against Venezuela". Chavez made the comments on state television Wednesday night.

Chavez has condemned recent US State Department reports alleging human rights problems in Venezuela and a lack of cooperation in counter-drug efforts. He has also advanced that Washington will have to show more respect if relations are to improve.

According to Chavez to the question from the Brazilian president "if I agree for him to talk about the subject of Venezuela", the Venezuelan leader replied: "talk about it".

Chavez clashed with former US President George W. Bush and expelled the US ambassador last September. President Bush officials often expressed concern about the health of democracy under Chavez, but last month he comfortably won a vote to eliminate term limits.

The Venezuelan president said he has written to his Brazilian counterpart saying the US should stop "attacking countries like Venezuela using lies and cynicism".

written by ch.c., March 06, 2009
here is a few more
" “Chavez simply doesn’t like independent businessmen,” said Miguel Octavio, head of research at BBO Financial Services Inc. in Caracas. “If a businessman doesn’t depend on Chavez, he doesn’t like it.”

"“Chavez cannot tolerate anyone who is able to deal with him in a position of strength, and the Polar group is a strong group,” Bottome said. "

" Fomento Economico Mexicano SAB, Latin America’s largest beverage company, fell to a four-month low on concern that its Venezuelan assets may be expropriated.

The takeover speculation mounted after Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez yesterday ordered the expropriation of a rice plant owned by Cargill Inc., the largest U.S. agricultural company. Chavez has also nationalized Monterrey, Mexico-based Cemex SAB’s local cement unit as well as electric and telecommunications utilities, cattle ranches and a steelmaker as part of his push to increase state control of the economy."

"“Inflation is at 30 percent, and food shortages are creeping back up, and those are the two things that keep Chavez awake at night,” said Esteruelas. “Chavez can deal with those problems in two ways, either by extending an olive branch to the private sector, or by taking them over.”

"Since his re-election in 2006, Chavez has nationalized the biggest telecommunications and electricity companies, cement firms and a steel mill. He seized heavy crude oil joint ventures in 2007, prompting Exxon Mobil Corp. and ConocoPhillips to leave Venezuela and seek international arbitration. "

DIGUSTING VENEZUELAN CHARADE - WHERE IS THATIANA TO SEE MY POINT BEING PROVED????
written by Augustus, March 06, 2009
Simpleton Latin American citizens have the government they deserve!!!
That’s why they should not have had the vote to start with, because they can easily be manipulated by populist, opportunistic caudillos...
Now... with such democracy (in name only), it represents a HYPOCRITICAL deception and a Grand Charade – As such, what is the point of even trying????
LULA must be tingling with envy.... he must be dying to get the same type of power... thereby justifying his self-appointed title "ruler"
ignorant Latin American populations should be led by powerful institutions - such as the armed forces led, by a council of 7 individuals (2 from the army/ 2 from the navy / 2 from the air force and a judge to act as mediator and vote in case of impasse)... such council members would be appointed by the head of each military branch for service of 5 years - no reappointment. surely a lot of details would have to be included to attempt preventing any single strongman to emerge as a leader, for this is the proclivity of most third world countries particularly Latin American (even the more developed ones)

written by Augustus, March 06, 2009
As outlined to a fellow blogger Thatiana under a separate thread, I quote myself: smilies/cheesy.gif
Joao - all boils down - ULTIMATELY - to ignorant voters and corrupt politicians.
written by Augustus, March 05, 2009

that's because COLLOR was elected by a bunch of ignorant voters in alagoas to start with... Only idiots, or influenced voters (bribed by special favors) would vote for the most corrupt of all politicians, the only man ever impeached in Brazil's history
Because the OTHER IGNORANT VOTERS from Paraiba, Sergipe, R.G.Norte, Piaui, etc elected their own corrupt senators.. those in turn for some "special" corrupted reasons elected collor de mello for the post...
DISGUSTING

AND
TathianaBH
written by Augustus, March 05, 2009

Tathiana's comments are lucid, yet over-optimistic to a certain point.
Naturally to educate the people in order for Democratic governments (at the Western European level, which is the healthiest at the moment) is the aim, but such a task, considering the impediments involved would take a least 3/4 of a century, if not a couple...
As both Brazilian and American citizen I trust I understand both countries well enough to compare; while I would never claim that the American voters are all educated (most of those are in the Northeastern states, most of the mid-west and the three Western States) even in the least advantegous regions, such as Alabama, Arkansas and Okhlahoma, for instance, most of the "hill-billies" are at least litterate, and most have obtained a High School diploma, whereas the entiredty of Northern/Northeastern Brazilian states, with the exception of the state capitals, are populated by nearly illiterate individuals, living in extreme levels of poverty and without access to basic education. As such, as bad as the situation or the educational level may be in Alamaba & Arkansas, they are far superior to Piaui and Alagoas... Therefore, although the Hill-billies are not likely to be sufficiently educated to make a sound decision at the voting booth, they are better poised to do so than their equivalent in Northern/Northeastern Brazil who are bound to be manipulated by some "Colonel" as the Local Landowners are called, into voting according to his wishes...

What I believe is that Socialism is the major heading under which Marxism is one of the catagories.

Bright as Obama may be, Kondratieff was brighter and was soon on the outs with the guys that killed Trotsky.

Obama will have enough time to see how history unfolds before his very eyes. It is the right of each American to judge him and his policies, either now or later, pilot's discretion.

ch-c (in agreement) / ric (strongly opposed)
written by Augustus, March 06, 2009
I have no objection to CH-C words - that's the TRUTH!!!
The so- called democratic governments of Latin America are the EPITOMY of HYPOCRISY.... That's why I FULLY ENDORSE and support (wholeheartedly) the return of a benign Military Government - IT MAY BE CALLED A DICTATORSHIP, BUT IT DOES NOT ATTEMPT TO LOOK LIKE A (FAKE) LIBERAL DEMOCRACY!!!

My sole objections are to Ric's rightwing proclivity in SUPPORT of the right wing branch of the North American Political spectrum is the shameful, degrading, damaging 8 years of REPUBLICLAN EXECUTIVE AND LEGISLATIVE branches, which COMBINED may have RUINED the United States of America! How can I comprehend any fellow blogger who supports the same party of so-called evangelical reverends (such as the obnoxious Farwell??) and the loathsome Rush Limbaugh - I’m speechless!!!

While I’m clearly a social liberal, most of those who have read my views in foreign policy are aware that in this level I may be consider much further to the right than Ric. Yet, I fully support competence over corruption - freedom of choice over religious intolerance - intellectual analysis over perverse incompetence (of the disgusting republican party).

Here are more recent news......
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez comments on U.S. President Barack Obama and the state of the U.S. economy. He made the remarks today on Venezuelan state television.
It’s regrettable the crisis that the U.S. is living through. Millions of workers are being left in the street, thousands of companies are closing, in the U.S. there isn’t a single new infrastructure project. Go look for a highway there, the country has gone bust.
Now President Obama arrived with some announcements, hopefully, but the capitalist model and its perverse values have failed ”
I recommend to Obama -- they’re criticizing him because they say he’s moving towards socialism -- come Obama, ally with us on the path to socialism, it’s the only road.”

And yet better.......Venezuela Central Bank reduced its interest rate from 13 to 12 % TODAY. AND THIS IN A GREATER THAN 25 % .....INFLATION RATE !!!!

POPULISM AT ITS BEST !

Augustus "disgusts me MORE than GEORGE W. BUSH "
written by ch.c., March 07, 2009
I am not sure that you will not add Obama in your list....in a few years !

Because after all, using Obama own budgets proposals and changes, the USA will AGAIN double its total country debts to $ 23 billion by 2019 ! And that stagering amount is PROVIDED all his proposals are accepted. Meaning....under the best case scenario !
What about (almost 100 % guaranteed) if his proposals are NOT 100 % accepted ?
Welll...then the country debts will more than double....by definition.

Let me say that to some extend, Obama is unfortunately is aalready on the POPULISM AND POPULIST.....EXPRESS HIGHWAY !

Saying HE inherited etc....is true ! But his 10 years plan is made by him not by his predecessor(s). And a 10 years vision is not short or medium term !

In one of your above comments you stated "Simpleton Latin American citizens have the government they deserve!!!"
Let me add :
The U.S. citizens too.... have the government they deserve...sadly...by DOUBLING OR MORE their already extremely high country debts.....EVERY DECADE !!!!!
If you think that Ohhlala has a wise and smart Long Term budget plan.....then U.S. citizens should NOT complain as they regularly did under Bush reign.....on their total country debts...and what they pass on to their futures generations !
Where is the difference between Bush and Ohhlala...if both double(d) or more their total country debts.

As to Ohhlala in particular, he is already playing a dirty trick.
As you may know or not, the Iraq war annual budget ($ 140 billion) was not in the official budget with Bush. The budget was OFF BALANCE SHEET as underlined by Ohhlala.
What is the dirty trick of Ohhlala ?
He put the Iraq war budget BACK INTO THE BALANCE SHEET BUDGET.
In doing so, he increases Initially the (2009..HIS first budget) budget deficit by $ 140 b. and by 75 b. in 2010.
And since the " for Iraq" budget is going to go down anyway.....ON PAPER (because IN the budget...and spending for Iraq will go down).....Ohhlala pretends the budget deficit will go down ! Thus he initially increases his deficit, as legacy, by importing the Iraq budget.
Wellll this is dirty accounting.

If you Augustus or me, have 2 spendings of let say 100 (official budget) and 10 (unofficial budget). this makes a total spending of 110. Right ? Regardless if 10 is in our official budget or not.Simple isnt it ?

Do you catch Ohhlala tricks IN MATHS AND POPULISM to get warm applauses AND SUPPORT ?

got to give obama time to see what happens
written by asp, March 07, 2009
his policies now are totaly geared to trying to face the unreal unraveling of the economic world that was handed to him.lots of experts say he is spending too much, new york times pultzer prise winning columnist kruger sais he is spending too little...i have never ever seen a presidient take so much flak before he even took office , and these few months after, as obama has had to put up with . no one on here even came close to predicting the devastating things that happened in the econimic world, so,im willing to see what is going to happen with obama' s policies.

and, he has already tightened up abortion rights , praise the lord..

he is shifting trends that made the rich get richer for the last decade to policies that will benifit the less than uber rich...and, that is what i want , capitilism with a concience, not the "greed is good", hyper uber capitilism that has festered for the last 8 and more years which really did create a false bubble of unreal oil prices and constantly falling dollar with unregulated banking actions.

do you think obama wants to play this "nationalising" game? hell no, he is absolutly forced into it by the unreal situation that previous actions have led to.every one is picking at his heels at every move, i am willing to wait to see what is going to happen.

and, one thing im betting on, he wont go invading a country for no real good reason , like iraq, he wont let a katrina happen where a week goes by watching american citizens suffer in absolute neglect, and, he will roll his sleeves up and tackle this economic problem much better than the previous administration. and he is correcting the represive actions the bush administration did with torture and under the legal radar actions. that is all a breath of fresh air right there...

he is a politition, he isnt going to go socialest, he isnt going to favor fundimental islamists over israel,he isnt going to satisfy every south american leader with his actions

but, lets see where he takes america in 4 years

An Analysis
written by Ric, March 07, 2009
1. Chavez Asks.....He doesn't demand, insist, cajole. That's positive.

2. Chavez is asking Lula to try to stop the US from lying and cynicism. He is asking politicians to stop lying. That may be tilting at windmills. Is it possible? Does Chavez himself lie? Does Lula?

3. The cynicism......cynicism is often the result of having been taken advantage of. It may be easier to have politicians stop lying than to stop the cynicism. A dog learns that certain types of people kick him. He goes nuts when those types of people are around. Try to talk him out of it, to reason with him. You get mugged by a certain type of individual several times. Can a counselor get your wariness out of your head? Is cynicism always bad, or is Chavez just asking the US to be more selective in its cynicism? Is it better international policy to be naive?

4. Chavez wants to recommend that Obama adopt Socialism. That's from another news story. That's like carrying coals to Newcastle, or asking Pamela Anderson to open her blouse more. Or asking the government to spend more.

5. The Loosed Canon. Does that refer to a defective camera, or a more relaxed view of Canonicity? Just asking.

ric, what do you mean by "dream on..."?
written by asp, March 07, 2009
what did i say that was dreaming?

again , i say obama is no socialist, he is nationalising because he has to...because of faulty republican policies that favored the rich getting richer...and i want capatilism with a concience and he is bringing that into the picture.he is tightening up abortion laws

all republicans can do is whine on the sidelines about him going "socialist.." they got us into this mess and they are whining and following rush limbauh a drug addict balony..they want so bad for him to fail, they could car less about america

anybody i see quickly critisizing obama now i just dont give them much credibility.none of these people predicted this econimic depresion, and they are just nit picking while people are trying to do what they can to fix it.

and i dont get your lilt on chavez at all...sounds like you want to have lunch with him.the guy lies through his teeth about farc who he supports. he lies about why jornolists and oposition people are shut down and put in jail

MY views on President Obama bold & risky initiatives // Clarifications on various concepts vis-à-vis formulation of Judgment calls /// Human Condition & Limitations....
written by Augustus, March 07, 2009
To tackle the mammoth tribulations afflicting the United States, which President Obama inherited from the highly disagreeable, inept, and careless administration of George Bush and his criminal gang, are likely to be deemed nearly unsolvable… Unless such overwhelming set of issues were to be handled by some Legendary sorcerer such as Merlin, it appears that only a Magician might be in a position to prevent a Deep Global Recession, or a Depression, if not the chaotic disintegration of Modern Society, as we know it. Yet, any reasonable administration (regardless of what the reader’s definition of “reasonable” may be) has no alternative BUT to endeavor to address all the perilous issues it has inherited from its predecessor… While I have no objection to classifying Mr. Obama’s bold approach as exceedingly perilous (to say the least), , I suppose one may as well consider apply electric discharges when attempting to resuscitate a comatose patient – for I drastic situations require equally sweeping measures…

While it is quite possible that Obama’s well meant plans will fall short of its indented goals, such failure should not be considered his alone, for no physician should be held responsible for the death of patient brought to his/her care in a state of apoplexy. Indeed not only the resulting “hemorrhage in the brain” should be considered endemic, but the previous treatments received from his predecessors may have been too toxic for the patient’s system…thus rendering successful treatment improbable!

No government is perfect for the simple reason that all administrations within any political system are run by imperfect human beings. Yet, some regimes are better, fairer and more efficient than others, and such judgment call indubitably depends upon the individual making the “call”…Because (as far as I know) we are all Human Beings, bearing all the rich variety of distinctions (based on genetics, education and culture) I daresay it naïve to expect any given view or opinion to be shared by others… In addition, if we add pre-conceptions and self-delusion to this equation, I fail to see to point of attempting to dismiss (let alone attack) the point of view of others (unless such views are utterly vile or idyllic and thus bound to be deemed nearly universal)

Under these circumstances, I should NOT have objected to opinions voiced by Ric, and should not have used strong verbiage… Yet, I am naturally equally entitled to differ and consider such views utterly preposterous! Likewise, ch-c is in his full right to equate Norway to Saudi Arabia – an outlandish analogy except for the oil income, while thoroughly dismissing the OTHER Scandinavian countries (which I CLEARLY mentioned in my previous entry and yet, appear to have been ignored on his conclusion, for it fits his views and pre-intended poin…

At any rate, because we are all humans, with extremely distinct views and expectations, no government which appeals to “jack” is likely to be supported by Heather. As such, from my point of view, with or without Oil, I consider Norway, SWEDEN and DENMARK the epitome of civilized, humane, and efficient societies: relatively wealthy, nearly corruption-free Constitutional Monarchies, within a (mostly) “socialist” economic framework. Finally, I would like to conclude by clarify that I do not deem Scandinavia as the bastion of “perfect societies”, for it’s unfortunately rather unlikely for such concept to take shape on Planet Earth; yet, in MY opinion (Not Joe’s, Carmen’s or Mohamed’s) these three Northern European nations are as close to perfection as it may exist within a world dominated by Humanity.

there are many solutions to the crises if people can be more visionary...
written by asp, March 07, 2009
it really shouldnt go back to the way it was. maybe its time to usher in new ways of thinking

great inventiveness and coming up with unique quality cutting edge products would jump start the economy off of this earning paper from paper , junk credit mentality . its been done before.

legalising marijuana would jump start the economy to heaven...its the biggest usa cash crop as it is and many states already know its got medicinal properties and it certainly is more benign than alcohol or cigarettes. i dont do it but i can see unbeleivible money wasted on arresting people and incarcerating them for buying and selling and it was done in alrming numbers during the bush years...ive seen statistics that are devastating to the waste america is splurging on incarcerating people for marijuana....it would jump start the world and take huge profits out of criminals hands

serious hookups with brazil on a number of issues would address various oil and alternative fuel questions and help get out of the horrible dependencie on people who celibrate americas demise

i mean there are tons of solutions out there for people and countries willing to buck the old mentality

DIGUSTING VENEZUELAN CHARADE - WHERE IS THATIANA TO SEE MY POINT BEING PROVED????

Sorry Augustus.. I was delayed for this one… I only read this article today!

I’m afraid that your point can’t be proven… do you forget that Brazil has already been a dictatorship in the recent past and that didn’t work all that well? Ah! But those annoying human rights…. Seriously if we didn’t have those, life would be so much simpler for the higher power… Sorry I can’t avoid the sarcasm! smilies/smiley.gif

I agree with you when you say that Lula is tingling with envy, although I think that Lula is a bit more of a communist/socialist with no intention to actually spread the wealth, if you know what I mean.

Your example of some small countries in Europe although valid in terms of example would be completely dysfunctional in a country with the dimensions of Brazil. With regards to spreading the wealth, well… I believe that the Brazilian government does that just fine with one of the highest income taxes that I have ever seen. I think that what you are suggesting is unlikely to work in the long run, although perhaps a “fairer” income tax system may be required, not to punish the rich, but to alleviate those who are on lower salaries. Perhaps something similar to the British system. But in saying that I have to say that although the Brits have an interesting system (of salary bands x percentage tax with approximately 5000 tax free per annum) it doesn’t work. A lot of people in Europe; and I saw it first hand in the UK, leach of this so called fair system and don’t actually work. And then it is left for those working to pick up the financial slack. Of course this means that there is less money going into the “pot” and therefore less money going out. We already see something similar with families in Brazil claiming, bolsa this or bolsa that.

As long as in South America, and any other country or continent for that matter we continue, as a human race to spread and encourage the culture of ignorance we will be in this hole that we currently find our selves in. With Chavez, Lula, Robert Mugabe and the alike in power. I understand that often in desperate situations we believe that we require desperate measures, but unfortunately we cannot just hand the government over to the armed forces. First because we have tried it in the past and it hasn’t worked, and second because the lot of us who post on this blog, discussing political issues would probably be arrested as enemies of estate. Now that would just SUCK!

With regards to the other thread about the little boy I must have a look at it. I’m apologise in advance to the educated Americans out there… but WTF? Who would ever say publicly that in Brazil the language spoken is Spanish? JE-SUS! I also saw a post that states that Brazil is the big country south of Florida.. no comments there!

As for President Obama, I think that he may actually really make a change (Yes he can! LOL). He is completely different from Bush (and I will not make any comments about Iraq) and although I think that he may have a more central approach (even with some aspects of socialism) I don’t think that he will be joining Chavez just yet…

So far President Obama seems to be keeping up to promises made during his campaign, one of them to bring the troops back. There are talks about heath care and said such. I think that he may really surprise some of us skeptics. Hopefully he will un-do a lot of the damage that Bush made in the last 2 terms. Beside he has only been in office for a couple of months and I think that he is actually one of the most scrutinized people in the world.

And that is my piece (at least for now) smilies/smiley.gif

NOW WHAT IS OBAMA , COMPARED TO LULA & CHAVWS
written by forrest allen brown, March 09, 2009
When we get piled upon one another in large cities, as in Europe, we shall become as corrupt as Europe
Thomas Jefferson

The democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not.
Thomas Jefferson

It is incumbent on every generation to pay its own debts as it goes. A principle which if acted on would save one-half the wars of the world.
Thomas Jefferson

I predict future happiness for Americans if they can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of taking care of them.
Thomas Jefferson

My reading of history convinces me that most bad government results from too much government.
Thomas Jefferson

No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms.
Thomas Jefferson

The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government.
Thomas Jefferson

The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.
Thomas Jefferson

Very Interesting Quote:

In light of the present financial crisis, it's interesting to read what Thomas Jefferson said in 1802:

Banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies. If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around the banks will deprive the people of all property until their children wake-up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered..

Doesn't this sound eerily familiar to what is happening in America today?

Obama may be the new Trotsky-both being great orators.

He was asked whether or not he was a socialist and really did not choose to answer the question.

Let the banks fail. Let GM go chapter 11. Legalize all drugs including crack and heroin.

let GM fail ,fire all thoes union workers open next week under an open shop act
cars would be half the price and the US would not be out billions of dallors buying cars they dont own

Joao , the law prohibits RIC and I to be in the same country at once

and, you just cant blame obama for the way things are working now.

it was never in their polocies to "nationalise" banks. they are absolutly forced to do this and regulate because of polocies that went down before them and huge unregulated greed that is the fundimentals of the conservative republicans.clinton carried it on, but, by god he balanced the budget and there was a phenominal computor revolution

im suprised at any american who has spent time in south america and knows how marxist socialism works and has seen people like chavez do his all supreme mandates and eliminate jornalists and oposition polititions, equate obama to socialism ( not acusing any one on here specificly but if the shoe fits , wear it). its just ridiculas , and laghable. its becoming the mantra of republicans and rush limbaugh as well as they actualy want to see obama and america fail (!!??!!).....mind boggling

obama is not a socialist, he is not nationalising banks and bailing these people out because he wants to, he is doing it because he has to

they ought to legalise marijuan ( they wont) that would solve a lot of problems

people who are critisizing what is going down now and dont put full blame on the administration before and the greed of people in general, are tryint to put the whool over peoples eyes

and yeah, obama, go ahead and talk to the taliban, to chavez and iran and cuba , what ever bush did before, it didnt work

but took the gennral to pull it off .
I would not stop there i would take a strong look at ther way the
US hands out money to countries and the way it is spent or taken by the government
of said countries that would save more than 3 trillion a year .

empty the jails of all the non US citisens , and send them back to ther home countries
along with there kids and wives or gril friends
all thoes that have minor crimes , the killers ,rapest ,drug loards ,keep tilll they rot
as there home countries will just let them free
and place laws on them if they come back they spend life in jail in a tent city in airzona

greed is the reason you people are in this mess .
its like no one can be happy with making just 10% they want to gamble and if they loose
dont want to have to pay , they want a redo but using some one else money

I dont blame Obama he only steped into the dung heap with a very small shovel
but he is the one that is going to have to did you out of it as congress is to busy
trying to spend the money on pet projects and not the cure for the problum .

dont count on it
as a person from the US you get less than they give others .
and as far a papers go fatima got here SSN befors she got her green card
we are in Texas now preping the pail horse for our next run looks to be about 14.000 miles
glad i am not the greedy type or would have to get a job to pay for life .

with the green card from the US fatima can get into most every country with out getting
a visa as she would just having a brasilian pasport
that is the only good thing about having the right papers well that and if i die before her she will get my social securty
if it is not given to some ileagle before then
have you looked into that one very strange rules on that one

joao on the pic glad you got it but you got to admit they booth look like they could
eat corn through a chicken wire fence.

how about a $25 a head for all illeagles you turn in that get sent back home
that would boost the unemployment 1.000.000 head hunters sending 8 million back
or just pass a law where they cant send back but $ 200 a month

  • Poor Women from Northeast Brazil Learn Joy of Meeting and Helping Each Other

Joined hands The small, coastal town of Condé is located just a twenty minute's drive from João Pessoa, the capital of Paraíba. The Northeast of Brazil has historically been a place of encounter and mixing between peoples. For millenia groups of indigenous people fished, farmed, migrated and sometimes fought along this large, fertile area.

  • Ahmadinejad's Visit: Iran, Honduras and Brazil's Hypocrisy in Dealing With Them

Ahmadinejad and Lula The Brazilian diplo-MÁ-cia (bad diplomacy) carries on its accelerated course towards the non-acknowledgment of human rights, although sometimes it takes pleasure in saying that it does precisely the opposite. The visit of Iran's president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, is another example of a diplomatic omission that verges on hypocrisy.

  • Lula Is About to Fulfill His Wish of Getting His Good Friend Chavez in Mercosur

Lula and Chavez On July 4, 2006, representatives of Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay met in Caracas to sign the protocol for the entrance of Venezuela into the Southern Common Market (Mercosur). After two and a half years, the protocol was approved by the legislative bodies of Argentina and Uruguay, and as of now it may be only days away from being ratified by the continent's economic megalith, Brazil.

  • Child Labor Went Down in Brazil, But 5 Million Underage Workers Are Still Way Too Many

Child labor in Brazil One hundred and eleven years after Brazil abolished slavery, the number of workers deprived of their freedom is still huge. They raise cattle, produce charcoal, sugar cane or timber. Some of them, most undocumented Bolivians, work in basements of small apparel factories in São Paulo and other metropolis.

  • Some Humility Would Do Lula Good. On Human Rights Brazil Has Long Way to Go

A prison in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil On November 7, 2009 a few friends and I had an opportunity to take a look inside a Brazilian jail outside the city of Rio de Janeiro. We were able to take some amateur footage of our experience on video (see link below). It's no surprise, of course, that the typical Brazilian jail lacks some of the functionality of those in North America or Europe, but our experience that day was quite shocking.

  • Brazil's Amazon Rainforest Policy Is a One-Way Road to Disaster

Trasamazonian road in BrazilDepletion of the Amazon Rainforest is not a new concern facing environmentalists, biologists, ecologists, and a growing number of the Amazonian indigenous peoples. For decades they have feared for the fate of the world's most biologically diverse and species-rich hothouse.
