Foreign Investment in Brazil and LatAm Might Drop Almost by Half PDF Print E-mail
Written by Newsroom
Friday, 29 May 2009

Investment in Brazil The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (Eclac) has informed that the volume of foreign investment into the region may drop by 35% or 45% this year as a consequence of global recession. The warning is part of a report on the matter launched by Eclac last Wednesday, at the organization's head offices in Santiago, Chile.

Last year, according to Eclac, the volume of foreign direct investment into Latin America and the Caribbean was US$ 128.3 billion, a record high figure.

Upon releasing the report, the executive secretary of Eclac, Alicia Bárcena, said that the flow of foreign direct investment into developing countries has increased.

South America recorded growth of 24% last year. In Mexico, however, due to the crisis in the neighboring United States. investment decreased by approximately 20%.

Despite the crisis, many companies on the American continent are expanding their trade by means of a process known as trans-Latin investment, as explained by the director of Eclac in Brazil, Renato Baumann, to the UN Radio, in Brazilian capital Brasília.

"It is about strong investment within the region, but also outside of it. Let us not forget that Vale purchased the Canadian mining industry. The Brazilian Gerdau bought steel mills in the United States. These are the trans-Latin companies. And this, in the specific case of the Brazilian economy, has led to a strengthening of domestic groups," he stated.

According to the Eclac, the United States and Spain remain the leading investors in Latin America. Last year, Canada and Japan increased their presence in the region, mainly with natural resource projects.

Somebody better get this memo out to the hedge funds. They apparently do not know this and have been sending dollars into Brasil like there was no tomorrow! This has made the Real the strongest of all currencies against the dollar recently.

It seems it is all about "compared to what" in other words, money is flowing into Brasil because compared to the alternatives it is attractive on a relative basis. Come hyper inflation, Brasil will be even more attractive due to its commodity based economy. I only wish and dream the inflows would fall 35%, I earn dollars but live in Brasil and below R2/dollar I can actually live cheaper in S.Florida than in Ipanema. And, as China and Brasil begin to dance closer to one another, China may well be sending more direct investment money here, perhaps as one way to rid itself of dollars.

Talk about a see saw. One day I'm reading that Brazil is immune to the global recession...another day to the contrary. If the U.S. goes down...believe me...everyone goes down. With all the GSEs in communist China and corruption/PERCEIVED stability in Brazil....don't bank on the decoupling myth.

On another note, I've noticed that the blogging on this site has seriously curtailed the last couple of months. I don't write too often but do look forward to the erudite opinions of ch.c and Joao et al. What's going on? COME BACK.

Thanks Vinny. I was away for a month visiting your country and enjoying the American hospitality. smilies/cheesy.gif. I wouldn't be surprised if ch.c is somewhere there in CA or FL. I was reading this site once in a while to keep me informed about what was going on in Brazil. Not much useful news though. smilies/sad.gif

Will come back soon to comment.

pthorsen , i understand what you are saying and the dollar is going below 2
written by asp, June 02, 2009
i dont think the average american really get what is happening with thier currency. if they did they would be near panic...

ive been warning americans for the last 7 years about the dollar going down and no one really takes it seriously. there have been enough warning articles in the new york times in the recent months to give everyone the truth about what can happen, but , the main media and average american just doesnt think about it

they need to live in a country where them currancy goes way down and inflation starts raking peoples lives over the coals. if they knew what could really happen there would be panic

"low dollar is good for exports" is the mantra of the rich ceos who are the only ones to gain money from that. most outsource the work anyway. the ceos make the money . but, when the average american realises that the low dollar is making all they earn and own worthless and prices for food and other things start rising very high, it will be too late

be afraid, be very afraid

Spot on.Constant Brasil bashing can get into your nerves. One must remember that the Brasilian readers of the articles in this site are educated and they can get pissed off with the lambasting. I enjoy reading your positive as well as critical views of Brasil. Keep up your good work. ch.c is okay, BUT...BUT... he tends to stereotype all the Brasilians as LIARS,CHEATERS,etc; That is totally unacceptable to me. smilies/wink.gif

  • Brazil Engaged in Another Olympics: Reshaping Its Image Before Games Open

Economist's cover on BrazilBrazil received a huge boost in its international image with its selection as the host of the 2016 Olympics, but it was really just the cherry on top of the overall recognition of the country's ascension to the ranks of one of the world's most important countries. Now, as it finally takes its place on the world scene, there has been a great deal of concern about what kind of image Brazil hopes to project, now that the world is really paying attention.

  • Iranian Leader's Visit to Brazil Takes the Gloss off Lula's International Image

Ahmadinejad meets LulaThe only good thing to say about the visit to Brazil of Iran's president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, on Monday November 23, is that it was mercifully short and lasted less than 24 hours. Ahmadinejad had his picture taken being hugged by president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva who gave him a warm welcome and said Iran had every right to develop nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.

  • Poor Women from Northeast Brazil Learn Joy of Meeting and Helping Each Other

Joined hands The small, coastal town of Condé is located just a twenty minute's drive from João Pessoa, the capital of Paraíba. The Northeast of Brazil has historically been a place of encounter and mixing between peoples. For millenia groups of indigenous people fished, farmed, migrated and sometimes fought along this large, fertile area.

  • Ahmadinejad's Visit: Iran, Honduras and Brazil's Hypocrisy in Dealing With Them

Ahmadinejad and Lula The Brazilian diplo-MÁ-cia (bad diplomacy) carries on its accelerated course towards the non-acknowledgment of human rights, although sometimes it takes pleasure in saying that it does precisely the opposite. The visit of Iran's president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, is another example of a diplomatic omission that verges on hypocrisy.

  • Lula Is About to Fulfill His Wish of Getting His Good Friend Chavez in Mercosur

Lula and Chavez On July 4, 2006, representatives of Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay met in Caracas to sign the protocol for the entrance of Venezuela into the Southern Common Market (Mercosur). After two and a half years, the protocol was approved by the legislative bodies of Argentina and Uruguay, and as of now it may be only days away from being ratified by the continent's economic megalith, Brazil.

  • Denying Education is the Other AIDS. And Brazil Is Guilty of Inflicting It

Children from a Diadema band Some sectors of the fight against AIDS have suggested that Thabo Mbeki, the former president of South Africa, committed genocide through his absence from the fight against the illness in his country throughout his two terms.

  • Child Labor Went Down in Brazil, But 5 Million Underage Workers Are Still Way Too Many

Child labor in Brazil One hundred and eleven years after Brazil abolished slavery, the number of workers deprived of their freedom is still huge. They raise cattle, produce charcoal, sugar cane or timber. Some of them, most undocumented Bolivians, work in basements of small apparel factories in São Paulo and other metropolis.

  • Some Humility Would Do Lula Good. On Human Rights Brazil Has Long Way to Go

A prison in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil On November 7, 2009 a few friends and I had an opportunity to take a look inside a Brazilian jail outside the city of Rio de Janeiro. We were able to take some amateur footage of our experience on video (see link below). It's no surprise, of course, that the typical Brazilian jail lacks some of the functionality of those in North America or Europe, but our experience that day was quite shocking.

  • Brazil's Amazon Rainforest Policy Is a One-Way Road to Disaster

Trasamazonian road in BrazilDepletion of the Amazon Rainforest is not a new concern facing environmentalists, biologists, ecologists, and a growing number of the Amazonian indigenous peoples. For decades they have feared for the fate of the world's most biologically diverse and species-rich hothouse.

  • Geisy, Brazil's Miniskirt Student, Should Try US College Next Year

Geisy Arruda from BrazilGeisy Arruda made history this week in Brazil, but for all the wrong reasons. What began as a poorly planned fashion statement has become a worldwide tale. Geisy decided to wear a pink mini-dress to her private college in São Paulo state, and after that, all hell broke loose.
