Brazil Not Happy with Obama for Keeping Status Quo on Cuba PDF Print E-mail
Written by Newsroom
Wednesday, 16 September 2009

US president Barack Obama US President Barack Obama decision to extend for another twelve months the 47-year-long US trade embargo on Cuba has "disappointed" Brazil and Latinamerica" said President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva's main foreign policy advisors.

"What I can say it's that it caused a great disappointment," said Marco Aurélio Garcia, Brazil's Executive international affairs advisor.

"This is a very negative signal for the overall feeling of Latin America. All expectations of change regarding the foreign policy of President Obama's administration have been frustrated," he added.

Washington's decision to extend for another year under the Trading With the Enemy Act, TWEA, which bans trading with countries considered a threat for the US is evidence that President Obama has wasted an excellent opportunity to show Latinamerica that with "his election things were going to change".

"This decision does not help relations of the US with Latin America or the process of change that has been undertaken in Cuba," said Garcia.

When asked if President Lula would express his disappointment to President Obama when they meet again at the G20 summit in Pittsburgh, at the end of the month, Garcia said it was not necessary.

"President Obama knows our position: it was clearly exposed during the Trinidad Tobago summit of the Americas last April. There's no need for President Lula to again talk about the subject," he pointed out.

The extension of the trade embargo on Cuba, imposed in 1963, has become a routine decision of all US presidents since the mid seventies.

The announcement happens only a few days away from the United Nations General Assembly, which in recent years has been an opportunity for Cuba to muster sufficient votes for an overwhelming condemnation of Washington's policy.

So What?
written by Breckenfeld, September 16, 2009
Perhaps because of that decision by the US adminsitration Lula will convene a summit of Latin American countries to discuss the matter. 47 years do not chenge overnight. It may be myopic on the part of the US. But it is an American decision after all. The Cuban dictatorship has not changed a bit either.

Leave Obama Alone
written by Ric, September 17, 2009
He's got his hands full. With implosion impending, the last thing he needs is the political fallout from cancelling the embargo. At least that's the way it looks from here in San Francisco.

Never have I seen the American people so irritated. Old Obama bumper stickers get more dirty looks than people smoking Camels at Pier 39.

dont americans f**king know that the previous 8 years of the republican administration is what really has brought the usa to its knees ?

if americans want to sit around being f**king irritated at obama, when the greedy unregulated uber rich financial sector stretched the rectum of every american, and , a hyped costly war has sapped the system, then they deserve to wallow in the pathetic reality that is going to close in on the usa if they dont wake up fast

stupidity abounds in america now with its incredibly dumb "tea party rage" and jerks who say "obama is a sociialist"

"Black" Obama is a sellout but white Americans will never want him as us president even if he keeps US historic embargo on Cuba, who understand this people??? Why did America ban trade with Cuba under Fidels direction and not with Fulgencio Batista, who overthrew a democratic and authentic Cuban governmentl helped by USA military AND politicians AND people?? WHy didn't it ban trade with Brazil Chile and Argentina while under dictatorial mandates, power usurped with the help of AMERICANS??? Obama in the end deserves to be the president of that country.

should south america been able to hook up with castro and the soviet uninion and become marxist ? do you know the history of the soviet union and how many people thay eliminated and murdered?

did you know castro killed and executed more people than any military dictatorship in south america ?

ok joao, maybe its going to get worse or who knows for sure?

what i have been saying is that if americans get off their asses and narrow minded concervatistm, there are huge solutions right under their noses, like legalization of marijuana

and , they have to make firming up the dollar a priority...do you know how many americans understand this ? very few...they should have lived in a country where the currecnie is devaluing each week or day...they would never ever feel the same about not having a firm dollar ever again

god, ric, i didnt really see that was you posting....now it make sence that it would have that tone if it was you...

Thanks for taking your precious time off to respond to me, ASP and I do appreciate your fine gesture. Time and again, you have proved to be an officer, scholar and gentleman.

what i have been saying is that if americans get off their asses and narrow minded concervatistm, there are huge solutions right under their noses, like legalization of marijuana

BUT....BUT.... the American Conservatives do not realize that their "Rear Ends are blocked", because they do not consume enough "Natural Foods". Of course our "Chief Conspirator", Dr.Cata came out with an essay and you hastened to add him in your shitlist, which of course is not acceptable to any single blogger in this site (including Mr.Severus (He is a real nut case, btw), Mr.Amaral, Mr.Eridani (what do the Eyetalians know about "Natural food"?).

The best thing to do, Bro, is to sit tight and give your buddy Obama another 6 months time. It is too early to judge him and demand that he repairs the damages committed by the previous administrations within a short span of time.

btw, I still think that Obama committed a big blunder in Afghanistan like GWB did in Iraq. BUT....BUT....BUT..., only the time will tell.

You leaving tomorrow?

The Embargo, The Agenda, and the Truth
written by Lloyd Cata, September 18, 2009
João,

"Dr.Cata came out with an essay and you hastened to add him in your shitlist", "sit tight and give your buddy Obama another 6 months time."

I am presently on several "shitlists" and have no intention of extending the tissue to wipe their arses. However, I would extend to those making lists enough detergent, in the form of truth, that they may thoroughly clean what is under their very noses. You see the truth is the light which is the strongest cleaning agent in this world. So each time I am added to another list it must be that truth has cleared the air and shed some light to clean up the BS.
On the issue of the embargo I have been against it from the beginning and have never wavered in my support for the Cuban Revolution. I do not and have not defended all of the processes by which the Cuban government has operated, but I have always saluted the resolve of the Cuban people to endure in the face of the immense pressure to capitulate to the Empire. Surely many attempt to escape the condition of a gulag in the trade arena. I have deep affection for the Cuban assistance in freeing the nations of Southern Africa. I have said many times and again, "If not for the embargo, Cuba would have economic and world stature comparable with Japan. Considering what has been done in the face of the embargo, who can doubt otherwise? For the sustenance of the Cuban people, the services that their government provides in the areas of education, health, and welfare. Surely it is only the embargo which prevents Cuba's development, and it is not the US embargo that has effect. It is the threat of embargo extended to third parties wishing to trade with Cuba. Yes, it is a difficult road, complete with rationing and state controlled media and resources, but it is a road well traveled by a courageous people and it is time, past time, to end this tragic episode between capitalist anarchy and socialist revolution. If you think "capitalist anarchy" is a harsh term simply look at the disaster of Haiti. Whatever Mr. Castro has to defend in Cuba look at the disaster that the Empire has created in Haiti! Look at the last 50 years of both countries and compare. Who would recommend that Cuba allow itself to be used and abused in such a manner? It is not my words that you should believe. Look for yourself who has provided for their peoples basic needs. Don't take my word, look at the CIA Factbook and you will see the social issues like infant mortality are the same in CUBA and the US, literacy rates higher than the US. How is this? And look at Haiti. Is this what they consider bringing freedom after the last 50 years? (more on this later!) Heaven forbid any nation on earth experience the Haitian domination by the Empire ( and here you see the complexity of Empire including European Powers).
I have addressed this issue of President Obama and the embargo and in earlier posts but I should hopefully repeat myself. As a progressive person, and for reasons I have stated, President Obama would like to scrap the embargo tomorrow, as do most progressive Americans, even those on the Right. Unfortunately, he has many issues; economics, 2 wars, health care, unemployment, etc. The list is large and picking controversy with the anti-Cuban crowd in the US is not favorable at this time. Obama, in fact, will do what he can administratively on this front, but picking a fight with the right-wing is not in the cards for his first term. It cannot work in the US for simple political reasons. Once reelected I can assure you that he will make this embargo disappear within 90 days. He simply cannot campaign to end the embargo and expect his party to win in the 2010 elections. It would put a socialist stamp on his presidency, which he cannot fight and get re-elected. Remember the Imperialists made sure of this when they tied the embargo into the US constitution. Remember, the US Congress must repeal US law in order for the embargo to disappear. The best that can be expected is for the US not to prosecute the trade of "third parties" to Cuba. I believe there will be some 'easing' in this area simply by selectively enforcing third-party trade. Not what Latin America wants right now, but all that can be expected in the near term. Forcing him into a fight on this is simply non-productive for both sides and may indeed embolden those who want a continuation of the status quo. The Truth is not always pretty.

castro tied himself with the soviet union , when the soviets union fell under the flawed ideologiy of comunism, cuba tanked. how come they have tourists from all over the world going to their beaches ? cuba can trade with any one but the usa , china is the new big power, they can trade with them...your arguments on that part are shit...

great for health care and a flawed marxist education...but the government has their finger up the peoples ass...they tell them what to do , what doctor to go to , what food is on the shelves, what music they can listen to , what internet they can have ( you hypcritical bastard posting your crud about the empire on a free internet) etc etc

i guess you are one of those people who likes somebodies finger up your ass...

what f**king shit list (gimme a f**king break ,joao) ? i agree with banning the embargo and why obama cant do it, i agree with your marijuana veiws, but your reference to the " empire" and your belief in some kind of socialist utopia clearly just means you like a finger up your ass...take that detergent and wipe your own ass (are you sure you arnt the motha fugga who said stalin was wonderful, cause you starting to sound that way)

joao, look at that economics guy in the article you wrote about...he sais he swoops in whene things are bad and that is how he makes his money, picking off the carcass...i mean that is an african buzzard, people like him are urubus, and , if you think about it ,its people like him, trying to make a profit any way they can on paper that really tanked the usa....bottom line he is only trying to make an educated guess, he cant tell you what will really happen...too many x factors. a giant earth quake in california could effect the economy too, and some people could come up with solutions....

anyway, any dumb stupid dolt could tell you the usa aint recovering in 2010

Basically, your view points are no different from that of our "Chief Conspirator", Dr.Cata. Except that he likes to make his points by recommending us all to read his favorite books. He is yet to recommend the authors like Ken Follet, Robert Ludlum, Tom Clancy, Fredrick Forsythe, etc; from where he derives his Conspiracy theories (I bet our distinguished friends Lord Augustus, Admiral Brown &others have read them).

What bothers me about Dr.Cata is his total support to Fidel Castro & his dynasty. He seems to be a man who refuses to acknowledge that in Latin America, the "rulers" tend to polarize two extremes. Extreme left or extreme right (btw, I wouldn't classify our ex- Presidents Geisel or Figueiredo in such categories). Dr. Cata hasn't given a full explanation about why he is supporting the Castro dynasty, Chavez dynasty, Kirchner dynasty, etc; In this aspect he fails in his analysis. smilies/wink.gif. Also he needs to define who this "Empire" is, as I think he is not referring to your country. He likes to talk in "riddles and puzzles" and underestimates my capacity to connect the "dots".

As for your comments on that interview by that Nippo-American economist: He is no different from ch.c, except that ch.c has invested in coffee plantation in Brasil, whereas this guy hasn't invested one single "centavo" in our patria.

BUT...BUT..... ch.c and I have been warning for months that our patria is reversing the time and going back to be "commodity exporters", as the article in the following link confirms:

http://www.estadao.com.br/esta...6907,0.php

Unfortunately we worked for 21 years to build our industrial base, but it just took 10 years to destroy it!!! smilies/sad.gif

asp - "expletive deleted"
written by Lloyd Cata, September 18, 2009
It is no secret to yourself my complete contempt for US geopolitical strategies versus socialist and nationalist interests. Be it Brazilian or other independent nations. Isn't your captains steering the global economic agenda who have crashed the ships of nations against the reason of common sense. Is it not these same capitalist who proclaim infallible knowledge and ultimate superiority in what is best for others, when they cannot balance their own books?
I mention the Haitian experience and US empirical history of this nation and you never respond to this shameful exhibit of colonial usurpation of Haitian democracy. Yeah, I know, your take is that Aristide was whatever other expletive you can rant, but you cannot explain 50 years of actual Haitian history with the possible charge of corruption of one "democratically" elected leader. This follows also the "democratic" election of Hamas in Palestine. Please explain how the death and suffering of US citizens given the corruption and politicization of US healthcare is superior to just about any socialist model. Of course, for you it is perfectly acceptable for the US to neglect its own citizens and formulate policy decisions that others should make for their own people. Capitalist anarchy and its media onslaught cannot sustain itself more less others (coalition of the coerced) in today information age. The lies, deceits, and military adventures of this movement in the US is counterproductive to world peace, independence of political and economic rights throughout the world, and a stain on the American declaration of freedom for all people.
Before this medium, the internet, was created men have stood valiantly against these colonial practices and military interferences in their national interests. Their lives have been sacrificed and compromised in too many instances to ignore the US hypocrisy between their words and their actions. The inheritance of US colonial practices from their European forebears is clearly seen in many instances. Your "expletive deleted" argument for US hegemony has absolutely no credible history of accomplishment so you wish to denigrate what is historical fact. Where is the success for Africa and Latin America that the US can compare with its success in Europe or Asia, before the capitalists bought complete control of the US agenda. Make no mistake...."The emperor has been shown to be an ass in royal camouflage and the empire will not survive under the light of truth."
A bath is what is in store for you, mon ami, and your only chance is the threat of a capitalist bloodbath on the order of Iraq, which was brought to you by the same people to whom you profess allegiance. Operation Iraqi Freedom only being the latest installment in the failure of empirical Western capitalist interference. Of course, in the process of spending more than $1 trillion dollars most capitalist anarchists consider the death and destruction fostered on Iraq to be money well-spent and lives well-lost in the global struggle for freedom as defined by the money changers and manipulators in New York and Washington.
It is not an easy thing to confront the liars and schemers conducting American domestic and foreign policy, as an American, but the truth will never be defeated. It will even survive your "expletive deleted" ignorance.

It is what it is
written by Ric, September 18, 2009
It doesn't matter WHY the American people are, as a majority, more up in arms and upset, riled up, than we have ever seen them. Maybe it's racism, maybe a sense of disenfanchisement, maybe you think it's because they are stupid, maybe you think it's because of events caused by previous politicians, it doesn't matter. It is what it is.

What you should be asking is, how is this gathering storm going to affect me personally and how can I take steps to minimize my exposure. We all know the dollar is doomed. Those of us who have lived in Brazil for decades know that the destruction of a currency does not necessarily mean that the country is also doomed. The predominate position of the USA in the world is more geopolitical than financial.

The Cuba question only matters a lot to Floridian expats on the one hand and atavistic nostalgic Marxist-Leninists on the other. So Obama is going to normalize post office relations with Cuba. Big deal. What he can't do is go too far too fast as he has on other fronts, which has created enormous problems for his agenda.

Not even 9 months since he took office and people are already complaining and I think it is unfair. But still I think it was not a wise decision on his part to increase the troop level in Afghanistan.

Economist's cover on BrazilBrazil received a huge boost in its international image with its selection as the host of the 2016 Olympics, but it was really just the cherry on top of the overall recognition of the country's ascension to the ranks of one of the world's most important countries.
