Emirates Wish to Open Islamic Slaughterhouse in Brazil PDF Print E-mail

Slaughterhouse in Brazil Canoas, a city in the Brazilian southern state of Rio Grande do Sul, may get a beef slaughterhouse with capital from the United Arab Emirates. The president of the Makaseb Islamic bank, Ahmed El Helw, from the Arab country, was in the city of Rio de Janeiro and spoke about the possibility with the mayor of Canoas, Jairo Jorge da Silva, and the joint Economic Development secretary, Francisco Valmor Avila.

The intention is to produce meats in the city to export to the Emirates.

Makaseb is an investment bank and Helw visited Canoas to participate in an Islamic meeting promoted by the City Council. He met with the mayor of Canoas and with the joint secretary during the seminar.

According to Avila, the Arab country wants to guarantee future food safety and is also concerned with the matter of water. The country does not have abundant water resources and needs to guarantee the supply of food from abroad.

Avila explains, however, that there is not yet a concrete deal, just an intention. According to him, the bank should elaborate a viability study for investment and a committee from the Canoas City Hall should travel to the Emirates to discuss the matter further.

The joint-secretary says that one of the factors that brought Helw to Canoas was logistics. "We have an airport, highways, railways and a port in the vicinity," explained Avila.

Canoas City Hall has agreed to donate a piece of land for the construction of the slaughterhouse. Currently, according to Avila, the city does not have slaughterhouses, but in the past it did. Slaughter must be according to Islamic rules.

The objective is to supply the Muslim population in the country. Brazil is already a great supplier of meats to the Emirates. According to the joint secretary, 67% of the beef consumed in the country is now supplied by Brazilian companies.

The president of Makaseb also met with the president of the Federation of Agriculture of the State of Rio Grande do Sul (Farsul), Carlos Sperotto, in Porto Alegre. According to information supplied by a spokesperson for the organization, apart from speaking about the installation of the slaughterhouse, Helw also showed the intention of buying corn, soy, rice and wheat from Rio Grande do Sul. The president of the Islamic institution said that his country plans to expand business with the state, mainly in agribusiness.

Helw also learned about a city government project in Canoas called City Hall in the Street, in which, on Saturdays, different secretariats talk to the people in public squares. He saw the project in action on August 15th, when talks were taking place at Ildo Meneghetti square, in the Guajuviras neighbourhood.

In talks during the Islamic seminar, the Canoas City Hall also showed the possibility of making available a piece of land for the construction of a mosque in the city.

The representative of the bank also made contact with the director of the International Promotion department of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply, Eduardo Sampaio Marques. He asked for the meeting with Marques after having read an article that mentioned the ministry director.

Helw has already been at the Arab Brazilian Chamber of Commerce seeking information about the business opportunities in Brazil. In an interview last year, he said that the group's main interest is in the areas of food and building.

Animals slaughtered according to halal custom are supposed to be alive when their throats are cut - a practice that animal-rights groups condemn. Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Sweden forbid it outright. Some governments have reached a compromise that allows for animals to be partly stunned before being killed. However, the screams and terrified moans that fill slaughterhouses are pretty much universal.

So true.
Would anyone accept his pet to have his throat cut that way when he needs to be killed due to disease for example ?

I am very happy that my country FORBID such humans behaviors !

And the transportation industrie of these animals is not any better than those cutting their throats while LIVE !

This is the beginning.

This is the beginning. Just like in London. First, there will be business, then the construction of one Mosque, then other mosque's in other cities, then Brazillian converts, then protests regarding the defacing of the Koran and Prophet Mohammed, then women in dark outfits, then radicalization and the inability of the locals to protest the presence of Islam in their midst. Then bombings. If you think I am alarmist, just check out London.

You are an alarmist and just think about your London Town. Quite self centered, if I might be allowed to say. Right now I am more concerned about the proposal of that Rascal Gaddafi to dissolve the "Neutral" state of Switzerland, cut it into 3 "Halal" pieces and donate them to Italy, France and Germany. This man has the audacity to present his proposal in the U.N., this week and I am sure Ban-ki-Moon will agree to it.

When it happens, our distinguished friend, fellow scholar & gentleman Herr.ch.c becomes a "stateless" person. Are you concerned about him? I bet not. We on the contrary, will be happy to give asylum to ch.c and treat him according to the Geneva Conventions. smilies/wink.gif

The last thing we need as a civiliztion is yet another slaughterhouse to facilitate the archaic, premorbial system of "animal agriculture". It's not healthy, sustainable or ethically valid. Man can thrive on a plant based diet. It is imperative that our future adjusts itself accordingly. Go Vegan

  • Brazil Engaged in Another Olympics: Reshaping Its Image Before Games Open

Economist's cover on BrazilBrazil received a huge boost in its international image with its selection as the host of the 2016 Olympics, but it was really just the cherry on top of the overall recognition of the country's ascension to the ranks of one of the world's most important countries. Now, as it finally takes its place on the world scene, there has been a great deal of concern about what kind of image Brazil hopes to project, now that the world is really paying attention.

  • Iranian Leader's Visit to Brazil Takes the Gloss off Lula's International Image

Ahmadinejad meets LulaThe only good thing to say about the visit to Brazil of Iran's president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, on Monday November 23, is that it was mercifully short and lasted less than 24 hours. Ahmadinejad had his picture taken being hugged by president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva who gave him a warm welcome and said Iran had every right to develop nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.

  • Poor Women from Northeast Brazil Learn Joy of Meeting and Helping Each Other

Joined hands The small, coastal town of Condé is located just a twenty minute's drive from João Pessoa, the capital of Paraíba. The Northeast of Brazil has historically been a place of encounter and mixing between peoples. For millenia groups of indigenous people fished, farmed, migrated and sometimes fought along this large, fertile area.

  • Ahmadinejad's Visit: Iran, Honduras and Brazil's Hypocrisy in Dealing With Them

Ahmadinejad and Lula The Brazilian diplo-MÁ-cia (bad diplomacy) carries on its accelerated course towards the non-acknowledgment of human rights, although sometimes it takes pleasure in saying that it does precisely the opposite. The visit of Iran's president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, is another example of a diplomatic omission that verges on hypocrisy.

  • Lula Is About to Fulfill His Wish of Getting His Good Friend Chavez in Mercosur

Lula and Chavez On July 4, 2006, representatives of Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay met in Caracas to sign the protocol for the entrance of Venezuela into the Southern Common Market (Mercosur). After two and a half years, the protocol was approved by the legislative bodies of Argentina and Uruguay, and as of now it may be only days away from being ratified by the continent's economic megalith, Brazil.

  • Denying Education is the Other AIDS. And Brazil Is Guilty of Inflicting It

Children from a Diadema band Some sectors of the fight against AIDS have suggested that Thabo Mbeki, the former president of South Africa, committed genocide through his absence from the fight against the illness in his country throughout his two terms.

  • Child Labor Went Down in Brazil, But 5 Million Underage Workers Are Still Way Too Many

Child labor in Brazil One hundred and eleven years after Brazil abolished slavery, the number of workers deprived of their freedom is still huge. They raise cattle, produce charcoal, sugar cane or timber. Some of them, most undocumented Bolivians, work in basements of small apparel factories in São Paulo and other metropolis.

  • Some Humility Would Do Lula Good. On Human Rights Brazil Has Long Way to Go

A prison in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil On November 7, 2009 a few friends and I had an opportunity to take a look inside a Brazilian jail outside the city of Rio de Janeiro. We were able to take some amateur footage of our experience on video (see link below). It's no surprise, of course, that the typical Brazilian jail lacks some of the functionality of those in North America or Europe, but our experience that day was quite shocking.

  • Brazil's Amazon Rainforest Policy Is a One-Way Road to Disaster

Trasamazonian road in BrazilDepletion of the Amazon Rainforest is not a new concern facing environmentalists, biologists, ecologists, and a growing number of the Amazonian indigenous peoples. For decades they have feared for the fate of the world's most biologically diverse and species-rich hothouse.

  • Geisy, Brazil's Miniskirt Student, Should Try US College Next Year

Geisy Arruda from BrazilGeisy Arruda made history this week in Brazil, but for all the wrong reasons. What began as a poorly planned fashion statement has become a worldwide tale. Geisy decided to wear a pink mini-dress to her private college in São Paulo state, and after that, all hell broke loose.
