Brazil to Demand in Copenhagen that US & Co Pay for Damages Inflicted on Planet PDF Print E-mail
Written by Newsroom

Brazilian Amazon Brazil should announce, later this month, a proposal to reduce greenhouse gas. The suggestions are being prepared by Brazilian experts and authorities and should be presented in December during the United Nations (UN) Summit on Climate Change to be held in Copenhagen, Denmark.

At a meeting with Brazilian president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the ministers of Environment, Carlos Minc: Science and Technology, Sergio Rezende; and the executive secretary of the Brazilian Climate Change Forum, Luiz Pinguelli Rosa, presented three proposals.

Lula hopes for the UN proposition to be "strong and of leadership", said the minister of Environment, after the meeting. According to the Foreign Relations minister, Celso Amorim, who is heading the Brazilian delegation in the negotiations, Brazil should have a leadership position, important and compatible with its plans of sustainable development.

The Brazilian plan provides for deforestation in the Amazon to be reduced by 80% by 2020, thus preventing 4.8 billion tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) from being emitted. Deforestation is the leading cause of greenhouse gas emissions in Brazil. After the reduction, the country should cease to emit approximately 5 billion tons of CO2.

In an interview in his radio show, Breakfast with the president, president Lula said that the aim is to have other countries take part in the creation of the proposal.

"We want to build it along with other countries. We want to determine what kind of proposal we can get in Copenhagen, especially from the developed world, so that developed nations will take on commitments, not only in terms of reducing emissions, but also in paying for the damage that they have already caused to the planet," he said.

Lula claimed that the proposal to be devised should measure how much gas each country emits, how much it has emitted throughout its history, and how much it is contributing for reducing emissions. "Because then you can hold each country accountable for the damage it has done, and thus put an end to this generic discussion, wherein all want to be treated equally. We want other countries to assume the responsibility," he stated.

In Copenhagen, the 192 member countries of the United States Framework Convention on Climate Change will have to reach a new agreement on climate in order to regulate greenhouse gas emissions after 2012, the year in which the Kyoto Protocol's first commitment period expires.

According to the minister of Environment, a new meeting to discuss the proposals was scheduled. Should the ministries manage to reach a consensus regarding the stance to be adopted by Brazil, a new meeting with president Lula should take place October 20.

What total nonsense, all of this. Lula, and thus Brasil, is like that 12 year old little brother of a 16 year old, hanging out with the 16 year olds and trying to act like one of them. They tolerate him buut look down on him as the 12 year old he is.

He, dork who wrote this: Brasil doesn't DEMAND anything from anyone. Especially not the US. What a joke.

So that third world countries who have done nooooo investments in industries for centuries....will pay NOTHING !

No problem. But then they should not get ONE FOREIGN technology or investment.

Lets have them develop their OWN !

In my view, foreign cars-tractors-harvesters-trucks-seeds-foods makers, etc etc should close down ALL their subsidiaries
in....BRAZIL !

And how could Brazil even produce steel TODAY had the steels mills not been developed initially ELSEWHERE ?
Same for cattles, swines, chickens , grains, drilling platforms, transportation ships, etc etc etc !

Ohhhhhh even the same for T-shirts, flip flops, jeans, head caps, textile machineries, kitchen appliances, showers & bathrooms.

None of the above were developed by brazilians.....INITIALLY !

With a big smile....your today most prized cattles and milking goats were from SWITZERLAND !
While your meat goats were from AFRICA !

Ohhhh and how much has Brazil polluted with their DEFORESTATION and sugarcane fields YEARLY burning ?
And with their herd of 200 millions cattles each producing 12 dungs...PER DAY ?
Not counting the swines and chickens manure !

Lets keep...SMILING !

  • Brazil Engaged in Another Olympics: Reshaping Its Image Before Games Open

Economist's cover on BrazilBrazil received a huge boost in its international image with its selection as the host of the 2016 Olympics, but it was really just the cherry on top of the overall recognition of the country's ascension to the ranks of one of the world's most important countries. Now, as it finally takes its place on the world scene, there has been a great deal of concern about what kind of image Brazil hopes to project, now that the world is really paying attention.

  • Iranian Leader's Visit to Brazil Takes the Gloss off Lula's International Image

Ahmadinejad meets LulaThe only good thing to say about the visit to Brazil of Iran's president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, on Monday November 23, is that it was mercifully short and lasted less than 24 hours. Ahmadinejad had his picture taken being hugged by president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva who gave him a warm welcome and said Iran had every right to develop nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.

  • Poor Women from Northeast Brazil Learn Joy of Meeting and Helping Each Other

Joined hands The small, coastal town of Condé is located just a twenty minute's drive from João Pessoa, the capital of Paraíba. The Northeast of Brazil has historically been a place of encounter and mixing between peoples. For millenia groups of indigenous people fished, farmed, migrated and sometimes fought along this large, fertile area.

  • Ahmadinejad's Visit: Iran, Honduras and Brazil's Hypocrisy in Dealing With Them

Ahmadinejad and Lula The Brazilian diplo-MÁ-cia (bad diplomacy) carries on its accelerated course towards the non-acknowledgment of human rights, although sometimes it takes pleasure in saying that it does precisely the opposite. The visit of Iran's president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, is another example of a diplomatic omission that verges on hypocrisy.

  • Lula Is About to Fulfill His Wish of Getting His Good Friend Chavez in Mercosur

Lula and Chavez On July 4, 2006, representatives of Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay met in Caracas to sign the protocol for the entrance of Venezuela into the Southern Common Market (Mercosur). After two and a half years, the protocol was approved by the legislative bodies of Argentina and Uruguay, and as of now it may be only days away from being ratified by the continent's economic megalith, Brazil.

  • Denying Education is the Other AIDS. And Brazil Is Guilty of Inflicting It

Children from a Diadema band Some sectors of the fight against AIDS have suggested that Thabo Mbeki, the former president of South Africa, committed genocide through his absence from the fight against the illness in his country throughout his two terms.

  • Child Labor Went Down in Brazil, But 5 Million Underage Workers Are Still Way Too Many

Child labor in Brazil One hundred and eleven years after Brazil abolished slavery, the number of workers deprived of their freedom is still huge. They raise cattle, produce charcoal, sugar cane or timber. Some of them, most undocumented Bolivians, work in basements of small apparel factories in São Paulo and other metropolis.

  • Some Humility Would Do Lula Good. On Human Rights Brazil Has Long Way to Go

A prison in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil On November 7, 2009 a few friends and I had an opportunity to take a look inside a Brazilian jail outside the city of Rio de Janeiro. We were able to take some amateur footage of our experience on video (see link below). It's no surprise, of course, that the typical Brazilian jail lacks some of the functionality of those in North America or Europe, but our experience that day was quite shocking.

  • Brazil's Amazon Rainforest Policy Is a One-Way Road to Disaster

Trasamazonian road in BrazilDepletion of the Amazon Rainforest is not a new concern facing environmentalists, biologists, ecologists, and a growing number of the Amazonian indigenous peoples. For decades they have feared for the fate of the world's most biologically diverse and species-rich hothouse.

  • Geisy, Brazil's Miniskirt Student, Should Try US College Next Year

Geisy Arruda from BrazilGeisy Arruda made history this week in Brazil, but for all the wrong reasons. What began as a poorly planned fashion statement has become a worldwide tale. Geisy decided to wear a pink mini-dress to her private college in São Paulo state, and after that, all hell broke loose.
