Brazil Expecting an Obama Visit in the Next Few Months PDF Print E-mail
Written by Newsroom
Saturday, 17 October 2009

Obama and Lula American president Barack Obama might visit Brazil before the end of the year once the US Senate approves the nomination of Thomas Shannon as ambassador before the Brazilian government, announced the head of the Brazilian diplomatic legation in Washington Antonio Patriota.

"President Obama could visit Brazil at the end of this year or beginning of the following," said Patriota in an interview with influential daily O Estado de S. Paulo.

"The confirmation of Shannon as ambassador in Brasília is the first step" for Obama to visit Brazil following the invitation extended earlier this year by Brazilian president Lula, added Patriota.

The Brazilian president met with Obama last April in Washington and again last July in Italy during the summit of the G8.

Last week when President Obama was honored with the Nobel Peace Prize, Lula repeated that his election as US president was in effect "an extraordinary event" and stated that the Nobel was in good hands.

The confirmations of Thomas Shannon as US ambassador and of Arturo Valenzuela as Under Secretary for Hemispheric Affairs have been frozen in the US Senate following objections from Republican Senator Jim de Mint, probably the most conservative lawmaker in the US Congress.

De Mint has questioned the Obama administration foreign policy, particularly concerning Honduras where he, de Mint, is a staunch supporter of de facto president Roberto Micheletti.

According to ambassador Patriota, president Obama would like to tour South America, particularly Brazil and Chile, to meet President Michelle Bachelet before she ends her mandate on March 11.

O Estado reveals that as soon as Shannon is confirmed by the US congress, Bill Burns from the State Department will be flying to Brasília to prepare the trip of State Secretary Hillary Clinton, who will lay the ground for the big meeting.

Lula and Obama have established a close relationship and the US president has gone as far as calling his peer "the most famous politician in the world."

Obama hasn't done anything yet. The whole event is just the "behind the scenes machine" to make him the poster boy for "peace".
I love political science. Once you understand it , everything is sOOOOOOO predictable.

Brazil is in a very weird and precarious situation. Look at every other article on this board about "Arab investment in Brazil". And this as the Arab world continues to be marginalized and isolated by the day. With the U.S as the head antagonizer. smilies/tongue.gif

I agree with you. In order to get additional clarifications on this issue, I cordially invite our distinguished fellow blogger Dr.Lloyd Cata to comment. I am almost sure that he will say exactly what we always say:" Follow the money". smilies/wink.gif

Great..just great...taking the position of Chavez, Castro, Ortega on the Honduran issue. Extending an olive branch to Iran....olive branch snapped in two and thrown on floor by Iran. Shovel ready jobs???? Trying to ram a government healthcare system down, we, Americans collective throat? The only "extraordinary event" that is unfolding is how much of a disaster Obama is shaping up to be.

Obama hasn't done anything yet
Very perceptive.

And this as the Arab world continues to be marginalized and isolated by the day. With the U.S as the head antagonizer
I completely disagree with this...some examples please. I would like this discussion among ,we, the "infidels".

We are not "infidels", but...but.. "innocent" bystanders in this great chess game promoted by our respective "rulers". I think the youngster from TX/BA was communicating this view in his customary subtlety. smilies/cheesy.gif

I will respectfully disagree with you on that my dear fellow. My brother was lucky enough to survive the 9/11 attack when the first plane hit Tower 1. He was on the 18th floor and got out quickly. Unfortunately he witnessed countless people leaping to their deaths before both towers collapsed. He was one of the "infidels" that was targeted that day. That is the ideology that, we, the free world are marginalizing and isolating on a daily basis. Unless you adhere to the bastardization of the Islamic religion...strict sharia law, jettison whatever religion you now worship, relegate females to sub-human status, forgo freedom.....you are an infidel and deserve to perish. The real innocent bystanders were (for example) the poor people who tried to evacuate Southern Lebanon in 2006 but were prevented to do so by Hezbollah and their road blocks. Hamas regularly fired Kuyusha rockets from locations adjacent to schools and hospitals. How about the recent protesters in Tehran?
South America is not immune to this either. Do you remember the Hezbollah bombing operation in Buenos Aires in the early 90's?
If you love freedom....you are an infidel.

dnbaiacu,
Now the U.S is bedfellows with Brazil
Interesting situation brewing........

The US has no choice but to court friendship with Brazil. Many others wonder why Brazil has become the pinnacle in Latin America but it is clear that the world is focused on Brazil as the agent for change in South America, Central America, and the Caribbean. Why not Mexico, Costa Rica, Chile? This process began long before the newly discovered oil riches and it has everything to do with the market for 200 million people with extensions throughout Latin America. Even with its size Mexico cannot compare and is little trusted in the world community. For this same reason Libya is once again welcome among the Western states. Libya has intelligence and commercial interests throughout the Arab world and beyond. It cannot be ignored indefinitely and so must be incorporated into the US/European markets. Let's not forget that there is no hope of defeating Al Queda without the help of Libya, which has agents throughout the Arab and Western spheres. Brazil likewise has links throughout the hemisphere that Washington cannot duplicate. The market for US exports, given a shrinking dollar, have no better place than Brazil. The US people are in fact in the midst of a Brazilian love affair. What more is necessary for Obama and Lula to discuss? Except for the photo-op the trip is simply confetti.
(BTW, please keep the bootylicious girls away from the POTUS. We have had enough of that, thank you very much!)

VinnyCarioca,
Do you remember the Hezbollah bombing operation in Buenos Aires in the early 90's? If you love freedom....you are an infidel.

Not to worry on this point. Brazil could never be fundamentalist in anything. That is what makes it so attractive. Brazil is simply what it is to everyone, fundamentalists and fornicators alike. Brazil's growing commercial and immigration ties with the Middle East are quite consistent with its advocacy of non-alignment and don't forget there is sizable Israeli presence throughout the hemisphere as they continue to look for Nazis.
Freedom and democracy have their fundamentalists too, as seen in the present situation in Haiti, where the proposed capitalist reforms are more draconian than the mullahs of Iran. Understand, capitalist dogma, under the banner of freedom, has no more good intentions for ordinary people than the Sharia law of the fundamentalists. It is simply dressed in more colorful garb.

João,

Whatever happened to the censorship of "the influential" O Estado de S. Paulo? Certainly they did not complete their investigation of certain high officials, yet the story seems to die without a corpse. I really did not expect they would surrender so easily, as I see the story disappears even here,in such a forum for free expression. You know I depend on your powers and influence to bring the truth to light. None of my amigos here seem to know about this, but I think the narcos, on both sides, are on the lookout for the news smilies/wink.gif

Oh, thanks Dr.Cata for assuming that I have "powers and influence"! I am amazed that in spite of you being a "Gringo", you are fully aware of the "censorship" imposed on "the influential" Estadão (that is how it is known for mortals like me)! That "Novela" has disappeared from their Headlines. Obviously a deal was made among the "amigos" smilies/cheesy.gif smilies/grin.gif There again, you have to understand that that newspaper has a large circulation among just the "Paulistas" and they do have a fierce competitor in that state called "Folha". Most of the other states have their own newspapers that are controlled by just one or two groups and they didn't give much coverage about the "censorship". You must understand that in order to survive, the newspapers depend upon the advertisements from powerful entities like the Federal, State and Municipal governments as well as large corporations.

You would be surprised to know that "Estadão" gave the news of Rio winning its bid for the Olympics 2016, but not a single comment was published. In general, the "Paulistas" are quite vociferous in their protests and I was surprised as well that nobody made a single comment. You and your amigos must know that it costs a lot more to buy a newspaper (national or regional) here than to buy a Sunday edition of NY Times smilies/sad.gif

So the 85% of the Brasilians didn't know that there was a "censorship" and the reason for it nor the personalities involved in this "Novela". BUT...BUT....BUT...., all is not lost. The newspaper you referred to will survive thanks to the action of the amigos. I am not worried, nor should you be smilies/wink.gif smilies/cheesy.gif smilies/grin.gif

Greetings...thank you for responding.

Not to worry on this point. Brazil could never be fundamentalist in anything.

Not my point. I was responding to Dnb's assertion that America is the head antagonist in marginalizing and isolating the Arab world and my assertion is to the contrary...America is the protagonist.

That is what makes it so attractive. Brazil is simply what it is to everyone, fundamentalists and fornicators alike.

The ideology I was referring to (that almost killed my brother on 9/11) would find the libertine social values of Brazil an abomination and would consider them "infidels" worthy of death. Do you not agree? That is who we ( I'm American) are fighting in the Arab world.

I, with all due respect, I disagree entirely with your premise. The moral equivalency doesn't seem present. Under the banner of freedom, the U.S. was the first country to end slavery, defeat Nazi Socialism, defeat the Soviet threat. Please provide me with examples of what accomplishments or good intentions sharia law, not only gave ordinary people, but the world.

Stay well smilies/smiley.gif

When Beauty Becomes The Beast

VinnyCarioca,

The Islamic terrorists, extremists, and fundamentalists have their counterparts in the West with their contract mercenaries, paramilitaries, torturers, and thieves. Reconsider the fact that the US itself is a product of genocide. That's right!, I dare to proclaim and testify that the basis of US existence is genocide, and slavery. The fact is that this genocide is ongoing today against the Indigenous peoples of North and South America. Only you have a different term for it; you call it 'progress'. When the IMF enforces a $0.38 minimum wage on the people of Haiti, that is modern day slavery, and even worse than the slavery practiced in colonial times. When the capitalist steal the land, dig their mines, drill their oil and gas, and leave behind poisons and toxins producing a lingering death, if not an immediate death for those who complain or dare to fight back, that is genocide.

Please attempt to refrain from preaching the inherent righteousness of a democracy and freedom that is prejudicial in nature and genocidal in action. There is a long and violent history to be considered by colonialists and crusaders promising peace and prosperity only to deliver death and destruction. Believe me, Iraqi children will remember the death and destruction brought by the US long after they have forgotten Saddam Hussein. Now the Empire has prepared the field and sown the seeds of terrorism in Iraq with an unjustifiable war now promoted to further freedom and democracy. History and truth have meaning and consequences. Sometimes it is the sins of the father.....

I regret I missed all of this. smilies/sad.gif

The U.S is being fed anti-islamic propagada. How no one can see this is ridiculous.. But yet again, it is the U.S. It's only the money there that makes the populace "seem" half way intelligent.
What is going on is so much deeper than most imagine. Or really care to want to know.

The U.S is in Afgahnastan ( however you spell it) over pipelines and poppie seeds,, nothing more , nothing less. And they have been fooling around in the middle east in general over oil. Anyone would fight back if their land , way of life, food was tampered with. This whole "War on Terrorism" is a front . These children growing up under these circumstances have been "bred". Just like the children in the U.S are being "bred" to be CLUELESS. This has been going on the last 20 years or so. And now we have this situation. 20 years ago "OBAMA" was being "funneled" through the system to be where he is today. Deep down in the pysche of ALL Americans we KNOW this. It's just that most CAN'T BEAR TRUTH. So they are blaming the "terrorists" for their problems and not recognizing that the real "terrorists" are right among them between the U.S and Great Britain and the monied elite the globe over.
If you get caught up in what the media is feeding the masses you are a fool.
Not taking anything from the violence the so-called "radicals" commit. but:

I dare to proclaim and testify that the basis of US existence is genocide, and slavery.

that's TRUTH.
And there are consequences for everything. Karma is life.
