Brazil: Rio's Drug Lords Knock Down Military Chopper and Kill Two Policemen PDF Print E-mail
Written by José Wilson Miranda
Saturday, 17 October 2009

Helicopter burned in Rio by drug lords Rio de Janeiro's drug traffickers knocked down a police helicopter that was after them, this Saturday, October 17, killing two military policemen who were inside the aircraft. The chopper was hit by bullets and tried to land in a soccer field in Sampaio's Olympic Village, in the north side of Rio, but the aircraft caught fire and exploded.

Police and traffickers had been shooting at each other since Friday night. The military intervened in a dispute among drug lords trying to secure for their gang the choicest drug distribution location at Morro dos Macacos (Monkeys Hill), a favela in the northern neighborhood of Vila Isabel.

Rio won the 2016 Olympic Games bid earlier this month in Copenhagen despite concerns raised by the International Olympic Committee about security. Rio de Janeiro, despite recent police successes, remains one of the world's most dangerous cities. While most of the violence is confined to the favelas it may spill sometimes to the wealthy neighborhoods in the South side of the city.

Preliminary information reveals that the shots against the armored chopper hit the pilot in the leg and damaged one of the helicopter's propellers.

According to the police, the shooting between the gangs started around 1 am, when drug traffickers from Morro de São João invaded the Morro dos Macacos. During the gangs confrontation at dawn three bodies were found inside a black Peugeot in one of the access streets to the community.

According to Rio's Secretariat of Public Security, there were four policemen inside the crashed helicopter. Two escaped with some burns and were taken to Andaraí's emergency room. About 120 policemen took part in the operation to deal with the drug war.

Apparently in a move to distract the military, four buses were set afire by the traffickers. The sight of the burning vehicles contributed to spread panic among residents in the neighborhood.

In protest against the melee, residents from Morro dos Macacos staged demonstrations in the neighborhood, Saturday morning, setting tires and other objects on fire in Vila Isabel.

The population were protesting what they saw as lack of action by the police after the drug dealers started their little war in the wee hours of Saturday.

During the protest, Morro dos Macacos' residents tried to invade the 20th DP's (Police District) jail in Vila Isabel in an attempt to lynch inmates who they say belong to a rival gang. Some windows were broken by the protesters, but authorities were able to restore order.

"We do not consider this an invasion attempt. Actually, all that happened was an attempt by the residents to call the police attention. And we responded by reinforcing the police presence." said the coordinator for the civilian police jails, police chief Orlando Zacone.

the armored chopper ?
written by ch.c., October 17, 2009
Not so armored....in reality !
You got the proofs by now.
It was not shot down by a surface to air missile, to my knowledge.
Simply by long guns. Not even with special ammunition for armored metals !

BRAZIL NEEDS TO REVAMP THEIR MILITARY IMMEDIATELY!
written by ch.c., October 17, 2009
This is what Sarko is saying too !

It is not 50 but 5000 new helicopters that Brazil needs.
And the Brazilian Defense Budget needs to be tripled, since 50 % goes anyway straight to retirees pensions. They too want more pensions and retire even earlier than they do now !

And somewhat funny that the idiot Leo is 100 % sure that the police and the army is the same dept and under the same budget.
But what else idiots could think ?

But...but...as long as the Brazilian minority elite doesnt want to share more with its WHOLE society, dont dream for less revenge from the favelas....one way or the other.
Same for crimes rate, where Brazil EXCELS in the World Stats !
And as I stated more than once, funny that the Brazilian poverty rate is higher than in many many many poorer countries.
But so is Brazil with its TOTAL SOCIAL AND WEALTH UNJUSTICE.
I challenge Leo the idiot, and all brazilians in this forum to prove me wrong.

Probably Sarko wants to crown Jean as the next emperor of Brasil, Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay,Chile, etc; and make the entire South America as a French colony. I don't think that Berlusconi and "Tia Betty" would permit it, in spite of the interference from the "neutral Swiss".

BTW, Sarko´s current wife is Carla Bruni and please do not insist that it is Cecilia .

Cheers

people in brazil have no respect for the police and never will in my life time it has gone to farr. you let people kill and no onne gets punshied that startes at the top and goes down to the street kids.

no fear of loss no fera of justice as it can be bought sold or given away.

and the people loose rio has more armored car builders than any place in the world , and it is for civil cars not military you live in fear running around like so many rats trying to survive while the police and govermnet try to see just how much more they can take from the people

Rio is just sad
written by George, October 18, 2009
Rio de Janeiro, topigraphically, is a beautiful city. Anyone can see why the Portuguese and French fell in love with the place and stayed.

However, how could this city get any more pathetic? I've been to Rio de Janeiro three times and I was shocked by the elevated freeway connecting the airport to the city. That in itself should scare any tourists. I tell friends here that want a beach vacation,"Go to Cancun. The sand is white, the hotels are physically separated from the rest of the city, and if you to go into downtown Cancun, it's really not dangerous (unlike Rio de Janeiro where I am constantly asked for money by drug-addicted children on Copacabana and its backstreets).

Why on Earth would any sane person go there for the World Cup or the Olympics? Honestly!

To say that Brazil has it's hands full....
written by Bo, October 18, 2009
with the coming of the Olympics may be the understatement of the century. Tell me exactly what they're going to do in Rio if the FARC decides to participate in the Olympic Games? smilies/wink.gif

I'm glad in a way that Rio got the games, and as has been mentioned here, there doesn't exist too many places on the planet with the natural beauty that Rio posesses. But now comes the big problem, how do you resolve the violence. At the drop of a hat the PCC or FARC could turn Rio into a warzone, they've done it before. If anyone saw the footage of this helicopter being shot down and the brazilian police in their black camaflouge outfits and their automatic weapons as the helicopter was on fire in the background.....well, it looked like Iraq.

The world spotlight is going to be on Rio.....will Brazil be able to handle it? I'd have to say the odds in Vegas right now would have to be around 25:1 in favor that they can't.

people in brazil have no respect for the police and never will....

It would be best characterized as a lack of a distinction between the criminals and police. I have several anecdotes that could illustrate that.
Not that the police need it , but, this battle would give them the perception of "carte blanche" to do whatever was needed to eliminate this element before the games in 16'.
I wonder what the games would look like if the drug gangs decide to close off the tunnels. What a mess.

Eurocopter is a renowned helicopter made by EADS consortium in Europe. These gangs must be possessing military calibred weapons that it can bring down a helicopter. Yeah in some way it reminds of Iraq. Wake up olympic committee, Rio is not worthed.

Forget Grammar
written by Zico, October 19, 2009
Stop bickering about improper spelling and grammar. The main point is that these gangs have 6 years to continue Rio's image as the most dangerous beatiful city in the world. Image what they can do when the games actually get here. Yes, it'll look like Iraq. Unless Brazil can figure a way to clear out the favelas, permanently, Rio is owned by the gangs. Have fun with the Olympics folks.

A prison in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil On November 7, 2009 a few friends and I had an opportunity to take a look inside a Brazilian jail outside the city of Rio de Janeiro. We were able to take some amateur footage of our experience on video (see link below). It's no surprise, of course, that the typical Brazilian jail lacks some of the functionality of those in North America or Europe, but our experience that day was quite shocking.
