Obama Increases Pressure on Brazil to Get Boeing's F-18 Fighter Planes PDF Print E-mail
Written by Newsroom
Tuesday, 03 November 2009

Under secretary of state Ellen Tauscher The United States is still very interested in selling 36 F-18 fighter planes to the Brazilian Air Force and the Obama administration seems to be increasing the pressure to get the deal and win the competition with France and Sweden.

The latest message from the US, according to Brazilian daily O Estado de S. Paulo, is that such a sale would be very good to bring US and Brazil closer and well as to turn the strategic relation between the two countries into a deeper and more dynamic tie.

Ellen Tauscher, state under secretary for Arms Control and International Security, who works very closely with state secretary Hillary Clinton and was in Brazil to deliver a letter from her, told o Estado:  "This is a great opportunity for deepening our relationship with Brazil... The most important in this agreement is our relationship with the Brazilian people and the Brazilian government."

She didn't show any modesty when praising the American product, made by Boeing and comparing it to the French competition, the Rafale, manufactured by Dassault.  "We are not confused over what we are offering: we still have the best plane, the world's biggest airspace company and we are still the United States of America. We believe that, in the end, these are the parameters."

Starting from the very top everybody in the Obama administration is personally committed to this deal: the president himself, Defense secretary Robert Gates and the secretary of state. Tauscher seems to have only Brazil's interest in mind when she says, "Frankly, it would be a shame if Brazil doesn't get the best plane and the best opportunity."

Why should Brazil buy the Boeing fighters? Because they are the best, they have the best technology and Brazil will get technological transfer, she says.

Can the US be trusted? Brazil had some bad experience in terms of technology transfer. American vetoed the deal when the Brazilian government tried to sell Super Tucano military planes to Venezuela just four years ago. Washington argued then that the aircraft had sensitive American technology.

This will not happen again Tauscher guarantees: "This is a new government and a new sale. We assure the transfer. This is an unprecedented offer of transfer of technology."

And what does unprecedented mean? Tauscher explains: "The deal includes a bigger transference than it was contemplated originally. Boeing is the world's biggest airspace company, there is opportunity for generating jobs well beyond the production of these 36 jets."

Is there a chance the US Congress might interfere to prevent the technology transfer? "They cannot interfere. The American Congress would have to pass a law to block the technology transfer and since the Executive wishes to deepen the relationship with Brazil, this is not going to happen."

And how the US would react if they lost the competition? They would be disappointed of course, but the  under secretary adds: "We will still be friends."

F-18 Fighters
written by JAY GLENN, November 03, 2009
Ellen Tauscher, state under secretary for Arms Control and International Security, do not mention what the F-18 do not have.
THE FRENCH MANUFACTURED THE AIR SPEED INDICATORS THAT BROUGHT DOWN THE BRAZIL TO FRANCE COMERCIAL PLANE. (THEY WERE REPLACED WITH INDICATORS FROM GOOD YEAR AERO SPACE)
IT WOULD BE IN THE UNITED STATES BEST INTEREST TO SEE THE FRENCH SELL BRAZIL MORE FRENCH CRAP. When CHAVES invades BRAZIL THE USA CAN COME TO THE RESCUE.
Just remember France would be speaking German now if it were not for the USA.
How many French men does it take the defend PARIS?
NO one knows it’s’ never been done.

French Jets
written by Zico, November 03, 2009
The don't carry guns, just very sophisticated communication devices to call the Pentagon for help. Considering that Brazilian pilots flying these things just get to play with their toys all day in absence of any threat (as long as they stay away from the favelas) let the pilots decide which plane is more fun. What a total joke.

And in the end, Lula is not going to Buy American, it'd piss off his mento, Hugo. Comedy demais.

That´s a good news. instead of these undocumented friends sending their money to Brazil, they could always buy F-18´s at discounted rates from the U.S. government and send the planes to their country.

That is, the Rafale (by Dassault Aviation). Besides, the French is the closest ally of Brasil, and their technology is “independent” from uncle Sammy (that god damned freak ol’ bastard).

Hey there Double-Dot…. Long time no see!

Double-Dot versus French-Fries
written by frind of chc, November 03, 2009
A shining example of american neuroses while feeding his fat behind on French-fries… You may rename French-Fries to Freedom-Fries, but you will still be a lardass amerikan.

As Charles de Gaulle would have said….” Je suis fier de mon cul quand je vois ta gueule.”

Double-Dot, you have no more sense of direction than a bunch of firecrackers. My advice to you, sign up for some French lessons at Berlitz, sell your condo and move to Paris.

Meanwhile, I will choose to sip on fine French wine and some delicious Pâté de foie instead of McDonald’s greasy hamburgers washed down with Dr. Pepper. And as far as the French hating all things amerikan, I must agree!

Up yours… God Mess Amerika.

Double-Dot… Whatever is eating you must be suffering horribly.

Americans appear to be jealous of every nation or ethnicity, even poor Canada! Poorly educated and no respect for any nation but their own, amerikans will throw an embargo against you. Why can't Americans just wake up smell the coffee and get along with everyone else ? Hence, 9/11!

God Mess Amerika,

Costinha

PS:

Traveler asks “do the losers always hate the winners?” That is indeed a good question…. Ask the coach of american soccer (everyone else call it football!) team!

The only thaig eating me is your wannabe western Europeon ingrate mentality. Why would we be jealous of every nation or ethnicity? We have them right here. And there's a reason why they want to come and stay here. Poor Canada? They can afford to maintain a military that is smaller than our Boy Scouts because they sit on our border. Since the poor Canucks don't have to spend money on a real military, they can piss away tax dollars on their disaster government run healthcare system that sucks so bad that one of their former prime ministers had to send his wife to "Amerika" to have an operation that she would've waited six months for in poor Canada.

Why can't Americans just wake up smell the coffee and get along with everyone else ? Hence, 9/11!

Psyco Talk…. Sponsored by Double-Pot.
written by friend of chc, November 04, 2009
Let’s do some Psyco-Talk with Double-Pot, the knucklehead. First things first: I think you got a hold of some bad weed…. Try changing your supplier!

On the other hand, I see why you feel the way you do, knucklehead. Watching too many John Wayne movies, huh? I bet you watched the movie “Patton,” and “Saving Private Ryan,” didn’t you?

That’s OK, there are many more amerikans from that cowboy culture that have the same frame-of-mind as you do. That putative domination of savage people (i.e. Native Americans), the arrogant disrespect of other traditions & cultures, and much too oriented toward white america. However, in the 21st century, that appalling approach no longer serves you well (i.e. 9/11).

You see, many of us around the world grew-up watching with anger, the images of death and destruction of the poor, the people of color, the children and the elders, as the result of american foreign policy (too many american wars to mention here). Invariably, these tragedies reveal the violent and greedy underbelly of america, domestically and internationally. Being At War Is As Amerikan As Apple-Pie!

Arrogant americans coupled with a terrorist government and corporate greed, is a BAD combo. Classic american posture, deny the past and keep repeating it.

Double-Pot… Until the next time, do you get a clearer idea of how pathetic at this you are? You are the human equivalent of a bidet?

I just can’t resist…. “Vive La France” and “Down with the US of A.”

Hi mah buddy,

I didn't write the previous post! I would never call ya a Goddamn Commie, because you are not. Ah think there is a commie impostor here that wants to drive a wedge between the great people of Brazil and the Americans.

Ah also think you being a qualified aviator, should take a look at our F-18 s and send an e-mail to your President Mr.Chavez recommending to buy them for your Air Force. May be you could test fly this fine aircraft made in the good ole U.S. of A, before signing the contract. If you want, you can bring in your Swedish buddy ch.c to finance the deal. He wont be of any use in evaluating the performance of our high quality F-18s as their country cant even design and manufacture decent paper kites.

God bless America and F-18s

That is, the Rafale (by Dassault Aviation)!

Double-Dot (or Double-Pot)? As an aviator myself, I do appreciate this topic as well....

Technically comparing all the airframes in the competition, they are actually very similar in performance and endurance. However, Brasil can not overlook the unreliable american history in this deal. Today is Obama, tomorrow some other type of GW Bush and a congress' mood, and they will undercut Brasil and not honor past contracts. Frankly, Brasil does not need that aggravation when there are other better alternatives, such as the Rafale.

The Rafale makes sense for several reasons: Brasil & France are very close allies and being working together for decades (i.e. the Mirage). The French technology is not dependent on the US. That alone, is the deal breaker. Brasil will benefit much more with France in lieu of several combined projects, then a deal with the US. From a political stand, it is also time for Brasil to say "NO" to the US.

In short, Brasil has much more to gain in buying the Rafale other then the F-18. Sweden's airplane, is an unproven airframe design and it depends on US technology, making it a very poor choice. Anyway, I am curious to find out what the Forca Aerea Brasileira will pick!

Oil = War
written by Burning Steppes, November 04, 2009
Suppose USA sells the jets to Brazil. Brazil has a lot of oil and is way nearer than middle east... Therefore, if a war pops out there, USA already "knows what Brazil has in the air". Result: to know the enemy is to have a step further... Who knows wether countries will become allies in times like these. I´d better bet countries will treat others as enemies.
