Brazil Discredits US Report on Human Rights Abuse PDF Print E-mail
Written by Ana Paula Marra
Tuesday, 01 March 2005

Brazil's special secretary of Human Rights, Minister Nilmário Miranda, affirmed yesterday that the Brazilian government will refrain from commenting on the US State Department report on human rights in Brazil. The report, released yesterday, points out the violation of several rights.

"We do not comment on reports made by one country about another. We gladly accept reports prepared by the UN (United Nations), the OAS (Organization of American States), and other serious entities," the Minister said.

"These are multilateral reports that bring countries together democratically ," he added.

In the initial section on Brazil in its extensive report, the US State Department asserts that, although the Constitution provides for an "independent judiciary," it "is inefficient and, especially at the state level, subject to political and economic influences."

The document also accuses the military and civil police of committing various assassinations as the result of the use of excessive force.

"The police is also tied to murders by contract and death squads, which execute suspects, people considered undesirable, Indians, and activists. The police tortured and assailed suspects and arrested people arbitrarily. Despite having the power to act, the Federal Police failed to do so in various instances of human rights violations committed by state officials ... [thereby] sustaining an atmosphere of impunity."

Whereas in the United States they are MUCH more humane. Hell, they even give their underage criminals trials before sending them off to the electric chair...

American Hypocrisy
written by Guest, March 01, 2005
Human rights occur daily in America towards its minorities citizens and most of it is sanctioned by the US govt. The US has violated human rights all over the world dropping bombs and nuking anyone and everyone who stands in the way of US imperialism and greed.

The US has the highest prison population in the world consisting mainly of young black men who are locked up for petty criminal offenses or some fake trumped up charges just so investors can get their money's worth out of their prison investments.

Until America can look at her own dirty pile of laundry she need not try to look at Brazil's much smaller pile.

BRAVO U.S.!
written by Guest, June 04, 2005
To call the U.S. imperalistic is preposterous, and it's about time somebody said it! No other nation has had more opportunity to build and empire than the U.S. has, and yet every foe of freedom in the world it has conquered, it has freed the people and spent billions of its monies to reestablish them as a nation--look at Germany and Japan for examples.

I agree that the U.S. is not perfect, what nation is? The prison record alone is shameful. But, while its citizens must remain vigilant not to lose their own freedom, as all people must, I will not stand to let anyone call the U.S. imperialistic!

What you call "nuking anyone and everyone who stands in the way of U.S. imperialism and greed" is quite simply a free nation's willingness to stand against the foolishness and selfishness of the rest of the world and to expend its own wealth quite simply to free nations from tyrants and bring their people, for the first time in their history, under the rule of law, not of men!

Your anger is misdirected. It will continue to be until you are willing to think for yourself rather than parrot the confused thinking of your fellows!

Proud to be a citizen of the U.S.!
