Brazil Wants to Use Sports for Social Improvement PDF Print E-mail
Written by Luthianna Hollenbach
Friday, 29 April 2005

Within 45 days Brazil's National Sports Policy will be defined and officially approved, according to the Brazilian Minister of Sports, Agnelo de Queiroz. He believes that this policy will allow sports to function as an instrument of human and economic development.

The Minister met yesterday, April 29, with the National Sports Council (CNE) to discuss the final contents of the document that will be sent to President Lula.

Among other topics, they discussed the universalization of access to sports (combatting all forms of discrimination), human development, the promotion of social inclusion, the promotion of health, national economic development, and the decentralization of policies for sports and leisure.

Queiroz points out that this national sports policy primarily seeks social inclusion but is also aimed at excellence in sports, from the scouting of talent to the highest levels of training of athletes.

"At present, the main guideline is sports for human development, sports helping to manage social inequality, helping to improve the quality of schools, providing sports for millions of students," he observed.
