Brazil and South Korea Urge North Korea to Restart Nuclear Talks PDF Print E-mail

The Presidents of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, and of South Korea, Roh Moo-Hyun, released today a joint note in which they urge North Korea to restart conversations for a "pacific and diplomatic" solution about the nuclear issue in that country.

The note was put out by the Ministry of Foreign Relations, and is the result of the meeting between the two Presidents.

"Both Presidents expressed strong expectation that the issue will be resolved soon, for the benefit of peace in the Korean Peninsula and in the Norwest of Asia, as well as of the international appeal for the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons," says the document.

It also expresses joint commitment with the "continuous expansion of bilateral cooperation" in multilateral organizations, including the support to the United Nations reform.

Lula expressed appreciation for South Korea’s support for the Action against Hunger and Poverty, an international initiative launched by the Brazilian President.

In the commercial arena, the two presidents "reaffirmed interest for a successful outcome" of the current round of negotiations at the World Trade Organization, and acknowledged the advance of negotiations for a trade agreement between the Mercosur and South Korea.

They also praised the continuity of the cooperation between Brazil and South Korea in the areas of mineral research and energy.
