Brazil Loses 1.5 Million Jobs a Year Due to Piracy PDF Print E-mail
Written by Nelson Motta
Tuesday, 14 June 2005

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva met yesterday with the Secretary General of Interpol, Ronald Noble, for talks on the problem of piracy in Brazil.

Today Noble will participate in the Latin American Regional Forum of the International Congress on Piracy Combat, which is taking place in Rio de Janeiro.

Participants will exchange information on piracy problems and policy. The event will focus on the problem of piracy and its solutions in Brazil and Mercosur.

According to deputy Julio Lopes from Rio de Janeiro, piracy in Brazil is the cause of enormous losses in taxes and jobs. Lopes says that because of piracy and contraband, no less than 1.5 million jobs are not created annually.

Is the non creation of jobs the same as job loss? I highly doubt that piracy is an enormous loss of taxes and taxe especially to the tune of 1.5 million jobs. This sounds a lot like the the American Recording industry coming up with unsubstantiated numbers to account for a lack of creativity.
