Following two months of decline, industrial employment grew once again in April, in comparison with the previous month.

The rate of growth came to 0.6%, as announced today by the IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics).

Compared with April, 2004, the number of industrial jobs was up 3.1%. This was the fourteen consecutive month of positive results in this indicator.

Also in relation to April, 2004, industrial hiring exceeded firings in 11 of the 14 regions surveyed.

The outstanding performers were São Paulo (4.9%) and Minas Gerais (4.6%), with industry in São Paulo attaining its highest rate of growth since the historical series was initiated in December, 2001.

The sectors that contributed the most to this result were food and beverages (20.1%) and means of transportation (12.1%).

In Minas Gerais the sectors that did the most hiring were metallic products (32.8%) and means of transportation (13.5%).

For the IBGE, the indicators demonstrate a stable situation in the level of industrial employment.

"In relation to 2004, the picture is one of sustained positive results in industry, despite a deceleration observed on a quarterly basis between the final quarter of 2004 (4.0%) and the first quarter of 2005 (2.7%)," says the note released by the Institute.

The IBGE comments emphasize that the segments linked to agroindustry and the automobile industry did the most hiring, while the clothing and footwear segments were responsible for the largest number of dismissals.
