Brazil's Lula Calls Education Expenses a "Sacred Investment" PDF Print E-mail
Written by Carolina Pimentel

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said that his Administration does not view educational investments as expenses.

"Investing in education is the most sacred investment a nation can make to guarantee its own future," the President declared.

Lula pointed out that in the two years plus since he took office, three federal universities were created.

One in the coastal region of Bahia, another one in the ABC region of São Paulo, and still a third in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul.

Eleven university extension campuses were also created in the interior of the country. The President informed that he approved the creation of another 21 extension campuses this week.

According to Lula, the expectation is for 720 thousand people to be able to enter higher education in the next four years as a result of the expansion of federal universities and extension campuses, together with the places made available through the University for All Program (ProUni), which provides scholarships to students.
