Brazilian Indians and inhabitants of quilombos (villages originally settled by escaped slaves) share a concern: land rights.
That concern will be highlighted at the I National Conference on Racial Equality that begins tomorrow in Brasília, capital of Brazil.
Indians want demarcation of their lands and access to education and healthcare. They want doctors who can communicate with them, since some of the Indians do not speak Portuguese.
Quilombo inhabitants are demanding ownership deeds for the land where they live.
Also present at the conference will be Arabs (some of them Palestinians) and Jews who will discuss their situation in Brazil and solutions for the conflict in the Mideast.
There will also be other racial groups at the conference who will discuss their problems.
This is the first conference on racial equality in Brazil's history.
