Spain Pitches In for Brazil's Zero Hunger PDF Print E-mail

The Spanish International Cooperation Agency is in the final phase of evaluating a project that entails the donation of one thousand tons of food to the Brazilian Zero Hunger program.

According to the Spanish Ambassador to Brazil, José Cordech, the Spanish government will establish the final guidelines for the project by next week.

"Since the Zero Hunger program began, the Embassy has been mobilized to find some way to participate," Cordech observed.

"This partnership is now more intense with Spain's participation alonside Brazil in the battle against hunger and poverty on a global scale. It makes no sense in the 21st century for thousands of people to have nothing to eat or to die of starvation."

Another donation coordinated by the Spanish Embassy in Brazil is planned for later this month.

The amount will depend upon the contributions received from the sponsors of the Brazil-Spain 2004, Sports, Culture, and Solidarity festival, a series of events scheduled for October in conjunction with the commemoration of Spain's National Day, October 12.

In Brasília, one of the main events will be an exhibit of handcrafts from nine Northeastern states.

Around 3 thousand artisan families sent pieces for the exposition, which opens October 2 in the Spanish Embassy.

The intention is to awaken Brazilian and foreign visitors and entrepreneurs to the variety of Northeastern handcrafts.
