The Brazilian government persists in its campaign to get the economist, João Sayad, elected president of the Inter-American Development Bank (IADB).
According to a note from the Ministry of Planning, "Sayad was nominated by the Brazilian government to run for the office on the basis of his professional qualifications, academic résumé, and reputable experience in the government and private sector."
Sayad has been the bank's vice-president of Finance and Administration since September, 2004. The bank will choose a new president at its Special Assembly in Washington, DC, on July 27.
The incoming president, whose five-year term begins in September, will replace the Uruguayan, Enrique Iglesias, who announced his retirement in June, after holding the post for 17 years.
The secretary of International Affairs of the Ministry of Planning, José Carlos Miranda, is in Chile making contacts on behalf of Sayad's candidacy.
He has already traveled to Canada, the Caribbean, and Mexico and still plans to visit Uruguay, Paraguay, Argentina, Bolivia, and Ecuador.
