Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has sent a letter to the new king of Saudi Arabia, Abdullah Bin Abdul Aziz Al-Saud, expressing great sorrow at the death of Fahd Bin Abdul Aziz Al-Saud, who was the king.

In his letter, Lula highlights the friendship that has characterized the Arab-Brazilian relationship and calls for a "further commitment to peace and Arab unity."

Lula stated that it was "with great sorrow" that he heard of the monarch's death. "In the name of the people and the Brazilian government and on my own behalf, I wish to transmit to the Royal Family, the Saudi people and to His Majesty the most sincere condolences," he said.

"I would like to register the profound admiration and respect of the Brazilian people for the legacy of His Majesty the King Fahd bin Abdulaziz Al Saud.

"His constant commitment to peace and Arab unity will always be appreciated by all those who work in the name of tolerance and understanding between the peoples," declared the President.

In the same message, Lula wishes Abdullah success. "I send His Majesty the most sincere wishes for an accomplishing and prosperous reign. I trust that relations between Brazil and Saudi Arabia will continue growing stronger under his inspired leadership."

The president of the Arab Brazilian Chamber of Commerce (CCAB), Antonio Sarkis Jr., also grieved the passing of king Fahd.

"We are very sad with the loss of a great leader and statesman," said Sarkis. "I would like to transmit our condolences to the people of Saudi Arabia," he added in the name of the entity.

The body of king Fahd was buried today.
