Brazilian Experts Discuss Tourism as Jobs Generator and Poverty Reducer PDF Print E-mail

Specialists attending the second Brazilian videoconference on Improving Regional Tourism Development Programs with the objective of Alleviating Poverty, say that tourism is an economic activity with labor opportunities that can reduce poverty in Brazil.

The idea of using tourism to reduce poverty has been discussed by domestic and international agencies for some time after studies of the social and economic impact of sustainable tourism.

"The objective must be to integrate action in favor of Sustainable Tourism and Poverty Alleviation," declared Maria Luisa Leal, of the secretariat of Tourism Development Programs at the Ministry of Tourism.

According to Marcelo Neri, of the Getúlio Vargas Foundation, sustainable tourism works with two types of capital: natural and cultural.

It boosts the small business sector and has broad economic consequences as it involves market analysis, personnel training, cooperativism, public infrastructure, education, credit and, a big positive factor, takes place in the formal job market.

You have to be kidding!

Tourists from Canada are one of the state of Florida USA biggest income and job creators in that State economy.. Canadians tourists and snowbird retirees shun Brazil due to the Byzantine bureaucracy of visiting and driving in Brasil. The USA, Mexico and most of Latin America allow Canadians to drive in their states based on their home drivers license qualifications. This is not the case in Brasil.

Canadians, Americans, and British drivers licenses are not recognized in Brasil.. I personally have had several nasty encounters with the Brigada Militar and DETRAN over this issue. I no longer wish to invest in the purchase of property or a vehicle in Brasil.

Brasil looses and Mexico, Argentina, Chile, Columbia win the tourism dollar and retirees seeking a place in the sun.

Canadian Travel agencies, media, and the general population have little or no knowledge of the treasures to be experienced in Brasil.. All that is known of Brasil, North of the equator is Canaval, and Favela gang wars. Not a pretty picture of this beautiful country.

The Ministry of Tourism and Transport in Brasil do nothing to create foreign income creating jobs in Brasil..

Cheers to the above writer! How true he speaks. I am Canadian and own several reosrts in the south of Brazil, but it is a difficult to get the message back to Canada about the treasures here and with no help from Embratur.. The worst tourism marketing group in the world. They should look at the CTC or Thailand, or Hong Kong for advice and help on how to really market tourism products!!
