Students March in Brazil Against Corruption, But Pro Lula PDF Print E-mail
Written by Juliana Andrade
Tuesday, 16 August 2005

Five thousand students with their faces painted green and yellow, are standing in front of the Cathedral of Brasília, from there to move on to the Ministry of the Treasury and then to the National Congress.

According to the president of the National Students' Union (UNE), Gustavo Peta, the expectation is for 10 thousand people to protest on the Esplanalde of the Ministries.

Peta said that the protest is in favor of political reform, the investigation of claims of corruption in the country, and changes in the countrys macroeconomic policies to permit social development."

"We believe that the way out of Brazil's political crisis has to deal with these items," he said.

According to Peta, the protest represents the return of the black-faces and of mobilizations around the country. He pointed out that the protesters aren't calling for President Lula's collapse, because this would "open a space for the return of the right-wing."

The protesters screamed slogans like "olé, olé, olá, the rightists want to return, coup is coup, and this is my fight.

As a result of the protest, traffic in the direction of the Esplanade was interrupted.
