Lula Pats Himself on the Back for Brazil's Booming Economy PDF Print E-mail

On his fortnightly radio program, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva commented on Brazil's strong economic performance. The Brazilian leader cited GDP growth of 1.4% in the second quarter.

"We are going through a good moment economically. In spite of political turbulence everyone is aware of the necessity of a solid economy because it benefits every one of Brazil's 186 million people," said Lula, on the "Breakfast with the President" program.

The presidential radio program will be weekly from now on. It is broadcast on Monday on Radiobrás' Radio Nacional AM at 6:00. 7:00, 8:00 am and 1:00 pm.

Lula also cited foreign trade, where the surplus has been growing almost 30% a year. He praised the strong surge in the surplus since May, pointing out that it has gone from less than US$ 10 billion to US$ 11.34 billion in just four months.

"That shows that it was worthwhile to go abroad and advertise our goods," he said, adding that Brazilian businessmen have to travel more and meet with foreign business leaders, even inviting them to Brazil.

The President said that strength in the export sector meant more output, jobs, business and a better distribution of income.

"Purchasing power for low-income families has increased. A year ago a worker paid 67% of a minimum wage to buy a basic needs basket; today he can buy one for 54% of a minimum wage. We have got inflation under control and, most important, new jobs are being created," he said.

As for social assistance, Lula said the Bolsa Família program and literacy courses are now reaching 8.7 million people.
