Brazilian Black Entrepreneurs to Get a Boost from Government PDF Print E-mail

Brazil's Special Secretariat of Policies for the Promotion of Racial Equality (Seppir) and the National Economic and Social Development Bank (BNDES) are studying a development-oriented proposal to assist black entrepreneurs in Brazil.

The announcement was made by Minister Matilde Ribeiro, head of the Seppir.

"We are engaging in a dialogue with the social responsibility sector of the BNDES, as well as with the president of the bank himself, Guido Mantega, and our proposal is for us to proceed to a working agreement between the Seppir and the BNDES, aimed at a project in the area of economic and social development to bolster the activities of black entrepreneurs," the Minister affirmed.

In Ribeiro's view, the black population is the one that suffers the most from economic inequality in the country.

"Research data show that the black population is the poorest among the poor, because we have experienced a long history of social exclusion," she said during an interview about the National Encounter of Economic and Social Development with Inclusion of the Black Population, which ended Wednesday, November 9, in Brasília.

According to Ribeiro, government officials and representatives of social movements who took part in the encounter presented proposals to expand the programs that promote racial equality.

Tuesday, November 8, marked the launching of the Sectorial Training Plan - Citizen Domestic Worker, by the Ministry of Labor and Employment and the Seppir. The goal is to valorize and provide professional training for domestic labor.

For the Minister, this initiative will help rectify the historical inequalities experienced by these workers. According to her, there are 6 million domestic workers in the country, and around 57% are black.

it doesnt make sense to take any governmental steps towards "promoting racial equality", because right now is as racially equal as its ever going to be. if black people are the porestomong the poor like it states in the article, that simply comes down to a decision that person made some where, at somepoint in time. now there may not be as many oppourtunities for an education as there are here in the u.s, but i do know for a fact that no matter how poor you are that you are entitled to an education no matter the circumstances. so taking steps, and giving money, to black Entrepreneurs, would not only not make sense, but it would be fair to entrepreneurs of any other race.
