Brazilian exports of high technology products were the ones that increased the most last year, amongst the various segments in Brazil's industry.

According to information disclosed today by the Ministry of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade, shipments in the sector yielded US$ 8.7 billion in 2005, against US$ 6.6 billion in 2004, an increase in 32.5%. In all, Brazilian exports increased by 22.6% in 2005.

The performance, according to the Ministry, was influenced especially by external sales of radio and TV and communication equipments, which increased by 86.3%, and office and IT material, which increased by 43.2%. Last year, the participation of the segment in the total of Brazilian exports was of 7.4%, against 6.9% in 2004.

Exports of goods classified by the Foreign Trade Secretariat (Secex) as "medium-high technology", such as electric machines and equipments, vehicles and equipments for railways and transportation materials, increased by 29.7% going from US$ 22.2 billion, to US$ 28.9 billion. The sector's participation in the Brazilian exports basket went up from 23.1%, in 2004, to 24.4% in 2005.

In the field of "medium-low technology", such as coal, oil products and metallic products, there was an increase in 20.7% in exports.

In spite of the increase, this sector lost space in the exports basket, from 19.5% to 19.2%. And the low technology industry, according to the Ministry, had its share in the total of Brazilian exports reduced from 30.5% to 28.4%
