Economist Accuses Brazil and UN of Shameful Service for the US in Haiti PDF Print E-mail
Written by Daniel Merli
Wednesday, 25 January 2006

The opening ceremony of the 6th World Social Forum in Caracas, Venezuela, Tuesday, January 24, included a protest against the presence of the United Nations (UN) Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH), which is led by Brazil.

One of the speakers - there were around 15 - was the Haitian economist, Camille Chalmers, executive secretary of the organization, Platform for a Sustainable Development Alternative.

Chalmers called the mission "shameful" and called on the "solidarity of the Latin American nations to denounce it."

At the present time, a Chilean diplomat, Juan Gabriel Valdés, is head of the MINUSTAH, and a Brazilian general, José Elito Carvalho Siqueira, commands the UN military forces stationed there.

According to the Haitian activist, what the UN is doing is not a form of solidarity with the Haitian people. "The countries present in Haiti are merely performing a service for the United States," he said.

The opening of the 6th Forum was marked by a march, followed by a political demonstration, with the slogan "No to war. No to imperialism. An alternative world is possible."

U.N and Brazil.....
written by Guest, January 25, 2006

...are usually against U.S. policies.
Both are highly critical on the U.S.

If I am not wrong it is Brazil who offered to lead the Un peace corps and not the U.S. who asked Brazil.

Same for Brazil with the U.N.

Now is the time to take one side....or the other.
But dont hide yourself just in words but in facts.

No mystery here. Lula wants a permanent seat on the UN Security Council. So by volunteering for a UN missios he has found a way for Brazil to raise its profile with other UN member nations and perhaps achieve a favorable Security Council consideration based partly on being a "doer" and "promoter" of UN missions.
The fact that Brazil has not done very well should not come as a surprise to anyone either.
First, the problems in Haiti are based on a lack of respect for law and order. They are similar to the problems currently facing Brazil and given the circumstances would be extremely difficult for any nation to execute successfully.
Second, the problems that Brazil is facing in Haiti are similar to same problems that Brazil has been and continues to expereince at home, again without a successful outcome.
And you expected world appreciation???

No go in Haiti

Ok, so Lula does want a seat on the Security Council. Meanwhile Haiti continues to be what it is, and has been, since long before Papa Doc Duvalier and son crashed out.
You might ask what is the US doing? If they spent as much energy and money on Haiti as they do on nursing the Cuban exiles in Miami into slamming Cuba- more influential vote catchers than exile Haitians? - the situation might improve.
What if Castro sent troops to Haiti- maybe then, and only then, would Bush wave the flag!
Wishful thinking? What about France, then? Nah, They threw in the towel long ago- and anyway GI's don't speak French
