Electronic commerce should generate a turnover of US$ 1.8 billion in Brazil this year, according to Web Shoppers, a study carried out by the company E-bit, with support of the Brazilian Chamber of Electronic Commerce.

According to the research by E-bit, the segment grew 43% last year in relation to 2004, with revenues worth US$ 1.2 billion.

The greatest revenues in on-line retail were registered on Christmas, followed by Children's Day, Father's Day, Mother's Day and Valentine's Day.

According to the research, there are about 4.8 million consumers who buy through the Internet in Brazil. The information was supplied by the E-bit and the Chamber's press advisories.

Sales of products over the Internet accounted for only 0.21% of commercial sales in Brazil as recently as 2002. Receipts amounted to US$ 176 million that year, according to the Annual Commercial Survey released by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).

The products sold in greatest volume via Internet include books, newspapers, magazines, furniture, pharmaceutical products, construction materials, machinery, domestic and personal appliances, office equipment and materials, CD's, musical instruments, jewelry, costume jewelry, toys, cleaning and hygiene products, optical instruments, and artworks.

But in view of Brazil population that still represents only an annual average of
US$ 10.- per person.

Therefore puting the numbers in perspective shows another image, but a true rality , from the one your government wants you to swallow !
