At the inauguration ceremony of Brazil's new Minister of Finance, Guido Mantega, Tuesday, March 28, the president of the Brazilian Central Bank (BC), Henrique Meirelles, said that he will continue in his post.
Meirelles remarked that he met with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who "reaffirmed the autonomy of the Central Bank and our opportunity and duty of fulfilling our mission and continuing the work we have been doing in the Central Bank." Meirelles said that he congratulated Mantega on his appointment. "We are going to be colleagues once again," Meirelles remarked. He and Mantega worked together as members of the National Monetary Council (CMN). In an interview after assuming his new office, Mantega reaffirmed that Meirelles would keep his job. "The differences we had at meetings of the CMN were incidental. I don't recall that we disagreed," he affirmed. He also commented that he will maintain a permanent dialogue with the president of the BC. Mantega observed that the autonomy of the BC is guaranteed too. ABr
