Brazil Exports US$ 2.5 to the Caribbean. As Much as to France. PDF Print E-mail

Brazilian Minister of Foreign Relations, Celso Amorim, says that Caribbean countries have an enormous recognition of the role that is being played by Brazil in the stabilization of Haiti.

Amorim made his comments at the Caribbean Community (Caricom) that has brought together 15 foreign ministers.

"We discussed how we could all work together on the political, economic and administrative recovery of Haiti. Caribbean countries have a contribution to make," declared Amorim.

"The Caribbean nations have also expressed a desire for greater ties to Brazil and Mercosur," continued Amorim, pointing out that exports from Brazil to the region reached US$ 2.5 billion in 2005.

"That is as much as we export to France. It is fantastic," said the minister.

As for the fact that Brazil imports little from the Caribbean and does not invest much there, Amorim said he discussed a Mercosur- Caricom agreement on trade and commerce, and promised to continue studying investment opportunities in the region.

The Caricom has expressed interest in having Brazil join its Development Bank. "That will make it easier for Brazilian firms to participate in infrastructure projects," explained Amorim..
