40% of Brazilians (72 Million) Have Not Enough Food. 14 Million Live in Hunger PDF Print E-mail
Written by Adriana Brendler

Around 14 million people in Brazil live in constant hunger, and over 72 million Brazilians suffer from some type of food insecurity - that is, two in every five Brazilians don't have guaranteed access to food in adequate quantity or quality or with sufficient regularity.

This information, which was released Wednesday, May 17, by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), is part of an unprecedented study in Brazil on food security.

According to the study, which utilizes data from the 2004 National Household Sample Survey (PNAD), children, blacks, and residents of the country's North and Northeast regions represent the groups that suffer the greatest food constraints.

The survey shows, however, that 109 million individuals, around 60% of the Brazilian population, live in homes considered adequate in terms of food security.

These are homes in which there is regular and permanent access to a sufficient quantity of quality food products without neglecting other basic needs, such as health and education.

The study also found that around 18% of the population experiences conditions of Light Food Insecurity; 14.1%, Moderate Food Insecurity; and 7.7%, Serious Food Insecurity, which is characterized by the family's undergoing hunger at least once every 90 days.

The gravity of the problem is manifested both by the large number of individuals who experience hunger - around 14 million Brazilians - and the even larger number of individuals, nearly 40% of the population, who are unsure whether they will have the money to replace their current stores.

72 millions + 14 millions equal 86 millions Brazilians or 45 % of the population.

Quite a shame to be the Nbr 1 or 2 WORLD AGRICULTURAL EXPORTER and proclaiming yourself to be the garden of the world !!!!!!!!!!!!!.

You better FEED your citizens first instead of going to the WTO and asking for the developed nations to stop their agricultural subsidises !

You should do the same.

YOUR government is responsible first to feed their citizens and export only the surplus !

Brazil is the shame to humanity as to how they do things !

yep, stats are hard to come by in countries like brazil....you see that you can find just about any stat you want pertaining to the U.S. BUT with countries such as brazil, they're difficult at best to find, it's bad P.R. They know they're shit for reality, so for the love of god, let's not confirm it!

The article is very, very REAL ! It's good to proof that LULA's program is NOT working !!!

According to the comments made about Brazil and our Government, well... at least we are not causing hunger to other people by creating a War or an embargo.

About the comments on subsidies, it just shows that you don't know NOTHING about NOTHING. Subsidies DON'T help on food distribution. The problem in BRAZIL is that not enough people have access to food or water. Subsidies are just good for FARMERS, NOT to those who need FOOD.

GOD help the people in Brazil, because its government and population just seem NOT able to do so....... !!!

No, you're creating it for your very own population from the thievery of your own politicians. If they didn't steal billions of dollars a year they could get food to these folks with no problem. But god forbid if the politicians, on all levels, wouldn't be able to steal anymore to have their homes in miami, london, paris, etc.
