Brazil Creates Over Half a Million New Jobs. A Record. PDF Print E-mail
Written by Irene Lôbo
Wednesday, 24 May 2006

The level of formal employment, that is, jobs with signed working papers, grew 0.87% in April in comparison with April, 2005. This is considered the second best result for the month of April in the historical series compiled by the General Register of Employment and Unemployment (CAGED).

The figures for April were released yesterday (23) by the Ministry of Labor. Altogether, 229,803 new job posts were created.

The study found that employment rose in all sectors of activity, especially in industry and services. Manufacturing, such as food products, metallurgical goods, and textiles, added 78,481 job posts, the second biggest monthly increase on record for this sector.

Since 25,062 new jobs were created in March, the increment between the two months amounted to 53,419 jobs. April's figure is close to the record set in April, 2005, when 79,495 new jobs were generated.

Since the beginning of the year, 569,506 new jobs have been added. This is considered the best result ever for the first four months of the year.

According to the Ministry of Labor, the increase reflects seasonal factors related to agribusiness, the positive effects of the trade balance, the lowering of interest rates, and measures taken to stimulate construction.

In the 12-month period starting in April, 2005, around 1.2 million jobs were created. The minister of Labor, Luiz Marinho, affirmed that this year's goal is to generate 1.4 new job posts. Last year 1.2 million jobs were created.

The problem is....

...that no one can add the numbers provided in the article ! Nothing matches !

And if someone just re-read what Lula promised not so long ago for 2006 :
1.6 millions jobs, now it is 1.4 millions.

He also promised 10 millions new jobs when he became president, but LESS than 50 % were created !
