Brazil's Discusses Its World Leadership in Biofuels PDF Print E-mail

The National Confederation of Industries (CNI) of Brazil is going to promote on August 30, in Brazilian capital Brasília, the National Meeting of Biofuels.

The aim, according to a statement released by the entity, is to discuss the opportunities that open to Brazil with the increase in world consumption of green fuels.

In the evaluation by the CNI president, Carlos Eduardo Moreira Ferreira, Brazil, which already has advanced research in the sector, is in conditions of becoming the world leader in renewable energy production.

The meeting, according to the statement, is going to count on the participation of representatives from the industry, biofuels producers, researchers, private sector and government technicians and rural producers.

According to the CNI, the President of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, will open the event, which will also count on the Chief of Staff, Dilma Rousseff. She once was Brazil's  minister of Mines and Energy.

The Brazilian legislation foresees that, as of 2008, obligatorily 2% of biodiesel will be added to the regular diesel. In 2013 the proportion increases to 5%. Officials from the government, however, amongst them Lula himself, are saying that these deadlines may be anticipated. Many posts in the country already offer the 2% mixture, although it is not yet mandatory.

According to the CNI, diesel represents 57.7% in the national consumption of fuel for vehicles, which is the equivalent to 38 billion liters. About 10% of this total is imported.
