Brazil's Lula Pans the US as the Planet's Main Polluter PDF Print E-mail

One of the challenges for Brazil in the 21st century is to become the main energy power of the world, according to Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva stated.

In an address at the opening of the Brasil Ecodiesel biodiesel mill in the city of Crateús, in the northeastern Brazilian state of Ceará, he said: "Nobody has our conditions. There may even be countries that are larger than ours, but they have snow, hurricanes, typhoons and earthquakes. There are many things there. Not here. Here we lack a little rain, but we are going to work on the transposition of the São Francisco river."

According to Lula, reaching the objective of becoming an energy power is exclusively in the hands of Brazil. "The world is going to have to understand that Brazil is unbeatable in the production of renewable energy. And production does not depend on the world, it depends on us," he said.

The president pointed out, however, that despite biodiesel being "our great hope", Brazil still faces great resistance from the countries called first world.

"Because all that they make is good. What we make, cannot be. In Germany there is already a lorry using 100% biodiesel. In France there is too, but their industries here say that they only want to use 2%, 3%, 4%," he said.

Lula criticized the United States biodiesel production as they, according to him, spend a fortune in maize alcohol: "I believe that it is a waste to spend on maize to produce alcohol, when it may be made from sugarcane, in which Central America, Africa and Brazil are unbeatable."

He also discussed the need for the world to issue less polluting gas, once again criticizing the United States for not having signed the Kyoto Protocol. "A country like the United States, which is the main polluter on the planet, did not want to sign the Kyoto protocol and continues polluting," he said.

According to the president, "we are not yet considered a first world country due to our economic development, but due to our engagement with humanity, Brazil owes nothing to anybody."

Then why does he even bother spending tens of billion US$ to produce oil and gas...in Brazil and elsewhere such as Bolivia and Angola....for example ?

And based on Lula stupidity, I suppose that even Bolivia and OPEC should stop exploring/drilling/producing oil and gas.

Lula can replace all the world energy needs !
Will ethanol also become your National drink ?
Lula already adopted it...daily !

Laugh...laugh...laugh !

The president is right in that it´s shortsighted for the USA to get heavily into corn alchohol. The consumption of fuel in the USA is so high that if all the arable land in the US were farmed, it would only produce an estimated 55% of need. The largest moneymaker for the USA is food, not airplanes orcomputer chips. The only place in South America that comes close to the vast US midwest with millions of acres of deep rich topsoil is the Pampas in Argentina.

The reason the US doesn´t buy into Kyoto is that it is big enough no say no, having realized that it would be against its national interests to do so. Small rich European countries can sign it because they are rather post-industrial and they do have misguided views on many issues. Poor countries are for it because they sense a chance to get something out of it. Cadê o Meu?

Large developing countries like Brazil err in joining Kyoto because it is the first step in something they neither want nor need: a worldwide organization with the clout to tell nations what they can do and what they cannot, and the clout to enforce it. International courts, fines, pressure, and the end of nationalism.

The USA has enough mineral coal to supply all fuel needs for over 500 years. Coal can be made into motor fuel. Ethanol is a loser for the USA. The coming crunch is going to be in natural gas. Sources are too far from markets to use pipelines exclusively. Without natural gas there is no ag, since the main ingredient in fertilizer is natural gas. If Brazil wants to be first in something and make a lot of money, it should pour R&D money into new tech to move large amounts of natural gas cheaply by ship.
