World Won't Buy Brazil Ethanol When It Finds Out How It's Made, Says Congressman PDF Print E-mail
Written by José Wilson Miranda
Friday, 23 March 2007

Brazilian sugarcane cutter Repercussions over Brazilian President, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, declaration earlier this week that  rich sugar cane farmers have turned from "bandits" into "national and world heroes" continue to echo throughout the country. While the farmers themselves have praised the president many others have lambasted the presidential statement as inappropriate and insensitive.

Lula's comment was part of a speech he gave in the midwestern state of Goiás during the opening ceremonies for food company Perdigão's new factory.

"The sugarcane farmers," he said, "who six years ago were treated as if they were this country's agribusiness bandits  are becoming national and world heroes because everybody has his eye on the ethanol."

Lula stressed that this change is occurring during his term of office. Some of the critics remind, however, that until recently Lula and his Workers Party (PT) were ferocious critics of the landowners accusing them of being deadbeats who didn't pay their federal loans.

The PT had also aligned itself with social activists who charge the sugarcane growers with slave-like working conditions and was at the side of environmentalists who blame the landowners for burning sugarcane residues.

For Maurílio Biagi, a businessman who advises the São Paulo Sugarcane Agroindustry Coalition (UNICA), times have changed and sugarcane farmers have become more concerned with social matters as well as environmental ones.

If the sector is being panned, he says, this has to do with pure envy: "Brazil loathes success. As is the case in every other category we have good, average and bad sugarcane farmers."

"We may not be heroes," he says, "but we've never been bandits. Never a government gave our sector so much support. Lula can feel proud that this change occurred during his tenure in office."

Antônio Vicente Golfeto, director of the ACI-RP's (Ribeirão Preto's Commercial and Industrial Association) sees Lula's comments as a sign that the president decided to adopt a conciliation policy. "This PT change," he says, "has to be seen as a reflection point for the future. Lula is on a honeymoon with sugarcane farmers. However, we need to ask ourselves: have the farmers changed or has Lula?"

And Agrarian Conflicts prosecutor, Marcelo Pedroso Goulart, reminds that those people who Lula calls heroes are still exploiting workers. Goulart, who is also Environmental Prosecutor for the state of São Paulo, tells that there were 416 deaths just in 2005 due to the hardships of cutting sugarcane.

"Sugarcane farmers," Goulart charges, "keep on fouling the environment with the cane burning,  use of agrotoxics and indiscriminate deforestation. Moreover, they concentrate property, income and wealth. In a democracy, businessmen with such a profile cannot be considered heroes. They should be investigated by the organs subordinated to the presidency."

Another one opposed to Lula's sudden change of heart is an old friend of the president, House Representative and president of Força Sindical (a central trade union), Paulo Pereira da Silva, better known as Paulinho. For him to call landowners heroes is nonsense:

"Lula is staying too much in Brasília, which is like a fantasy island. He has to travel more throughout Brazil to see how the working relations are here. I even believe that alcohol will become Brazil's main exporting commodity. But sugarcane farmers will always be sugarcane farmers.

"The numbers from the São Carlos University show that a sugarcane rural worker thrusts his heavy knife 36,000 times and walks 5.5 miles every day carrying sugarcane. This is insane. People are going to denounce this in some country and nobody will want to buy the Brazilian alcohol."

Strange !!!!
written by ch.c., 2007-03-23 08:12:55
Similar accusations have been written here....by myself ! Hey hey !

Brazilians bandits in, from criminals to corrupted politicians to cheating governments, have alsways been considered as Heroes....by Brazilians. In fact so much heroes that you re-elect them...one after the other !!!!!!

In my view Brazilian SUGAR AND ETHANOL should be simply banned WORLDWIDE...as long as deliveries dont come with a certificate aigned
by a high level official, such as Lula himself, that NOOOOOOOOO sugar cane has been manually harvested.

Same for your pig iron exports using thousands and thousands of workers in slaves alike conditions !!!

As to the federal loans the farmers dont repay, I just remind you that they were effected with a HEAVY discount to the regular interests rates.
THAT IS CALLED.....SUBSIDIZES..... !!!!!!!

Is Lula the crook and cheater NOT AGAINST AGRICULTURAL SUBISIDIZES IN DEVELOPED COUNTRIES ??????

Strange that one more and as usual he feels that what he does at home is good....but not so good when others do the same !!!!

Pfuittttt.....shame to him !

The argument presented by the Congressman makes about as much sense as the Japanese refusal in the 1980s to import U.S.-manufactured skis on the grounds that "Japanese snow was
different." The price differential associated with Brasilian ethanol relates to the relative energy-content of raw material inputs and not to cheap labor. If the U.S. voided the tariff in return
for government-mandated mechanization of sugar cane harvesting in Brasil, the fazendeiros and the Brasilian-based ethanol producers would see their profits rise.

"If the U.S. voided the tariff in return..."
It's always someone elses fault. To use a cliche, " They blame everyone but themselves"
No offence meant, but it's up to us to solve our problems and we are not doing it.
Let's roll up our sleeves instead of just kiddind ourselves, our children deserve better.
Ariba every one!!!!
No more manana.
To Conceicao and his...... not to cheap labor !!!!!.
written by ch.c., 2007-03-23 21:27:02
What is not cheap labor....for you ? US$ 190.- per month ?????
And I suggest you read the recent articles on this site concerning the working conditions of the sugar cane workers, not those driving tractors......but the sugar cane CUTTERS....OBVIOUSLY !!!!!!!!

And if the salary is good and the working conditions are good....why dont you switch your job ???????
A lifetime job !

This said, please tell us how many tons of corn in the USA are manually harvested ???????
In Brazil, 40 % of the sugarcane is manually harvested. Or around 180 millions tons out of a total production of 450 millions tons !!!!!!

Just imagine, the quantity of 180 millions tons

And why should the U.S.A. void the tariff ? Do you void your own tariffs, such as 100 % on foreign made cars and 100 % on high end
PCs ?????

It is just amazing that Brazil want every trade partner to eliminate their tariffs without eliminating their own import tariffs !!!!

And just to show you how ignorant you are, is simply that you dont even know that ACTUALLY
OOOPS----PROBLEMS......
written by ch.c., 2007-03-23 21:39:22
And just to show you how ignorant you are, is simply that you dont even know that ACTUALLY very little of your ethanol exported to the USA has the tax charged.......BECAUSE :
THE USA, BY LAW, ALLOW 7 % OF THEIR OWN NON FOSSIL FUEL PRODUCTION......... TO BE IMPORTED..... TAX FREE !!!!!

Yessssss Buddy, knowing that the USA in 2006 produced around 5,5 billion gallons of ethanol, and that Brazil exported to the USA around 400 millions gallons, it means that the U.S.A. import tax was charged ON ALMOST.....NOTHING !!!!!

WHY DOESNT BRAZIL.....NEVER RECIPROCATE ???????

FURTHERMORE, ON THE TOTAL OF US$ 24 BILLION YOUR OVERALL EXPORTS TO THE USA, US$ 4 BILLION DONT BEAR ANY U.S. TAXES AS A GESTURE TO YOU !
Since you are a knowlegable and educated person, please tell the audience how much of the U.S. exports to Brazil is tax free !!!!!

A real junkie this Conceicao, who doesnt even know what he is talking about !
...
written by conceicao, 2007-03-23 22:12:37
I will let the other readers of this blog decide who does not know what they are talking about. First, the 7% that comes in duty free comes under the Caribbean and Cafta free trade
agreements that do not cover Brasil. (Brasil does export some sugarcane byproducts to countries who benefit from the 7% exclusion who then further refine the Brasilian base into ethanol,
all this as a scheme to ameliorate the effect of the U.S. tariff on Brasilian production.) Second, what is or is not cheap labor is irrelevant to the discussion as the price advantage of Brasilian ethanol is related to the energy content of the base feedstuff for Brasilian sugar-based ethanol versus corn-based ethanol. Third, Brasilian tariffs on U.S. imports are irrelevant as the U.S. consumer and overall economy would be the main beneficiaries of the lifting of the tariff. My point is that the tariff is a needless beggaring of Brasil because it serves no useful purpose for the U.S or its citizens.
Fourth, I doubt any corn in the U.S. is harvested manually and seriously doubt Alexander & Baldwin employs any manual harvesting on its Hawaii sugar plantations. ( I, like Al Gore, have cut,
spiked and housed tobacco with my own hands as my ancestors have done for centuries - not so bad for a couple of weeks - but not nearly as hard as monual work in a sugar field.)
...
written by conceicao, 2007-03-23 22:27:28
My opinion as to what really is going on with Lula praising the sugar producers is the following. The Brasilian ethanol industry is like the natural gas industry in that it would function
optimally producing under long-term supply agreements with end-users, i.e., the U.S. gasoline refineries who are really the only game in town at this point for ramping up the Brasilian
industry. Given the U.S. refusal, against its own interests, to open up the U.S. market, Brasil's best hope is encouraging demand through creation of a international standard ethanol grade pursuant
to an agreement with the U.S. as was recently announced. The reason Lula has thrown in so openly with the sugar producers is that he and his government face the difficult task of having to
ramp production is Brasil sufficiently to produce enough surplus product to supply and support the new international ethanol free market (without the U.S.) that the recent agreement with the
U.S. envisions. It is a chicken and egg problem. With sugar prices low and vehicle usage increasing domestically, it is easy to see all the Brasilian sugar and ethanol production being sopped up
internally - and the so-called Brasilian ethanol liberation movement failing as a result. Of course, this is what the U.S. and EU as protectionists want.
YOU are completely outclassed and profusely out smarted, Mr. Ch.c.

al lula is going to do is sell off the ethonal so brazilians will have to pay more at the pump just like food that is exported instead of feeding its own .

if brazilian ethonal is so cheep why does it go up every time gas does , some place in the world .

Brazil is like porto rico they want people to beleive they make the best rum , but a full 90 % of the cain comes from the states . for rican rum

if there was a standard that was pased who would make sure that there was no water mixed in with the ethnoal shiped from brazil that would be the trick ..

like selling cows dont give them water for 2 days and just before you go to sell fill them up good for another 18 lk

Something should be said about a man that knows all the illegal tricks on the book.... Specially from a man that had his boat suspiciously sized by the policy in a very obscured manner out of hundreds of Townsend foreign boats arriving in Brazil every year with no problems... from a man that claims to be American but writes like anything but American...from a man that in one comment lives in joau pessoa where his boat is retained and in the next comment he is a farmer in the outskirts of fortaleza ceara... from a man that claims that he is a Vietnam Veteran but his wife was detained in Houston Texas by the immigration… from a man that in one article writes as a third grader using a few miss spell verbs, to a man that in the next article writes like Shakespeare, Nobrega and Zollar all together... etc etc etc...
Your intellect and power of reasoning only equals to that of Ch.c !!! (That means is non-existent)
You are a confused and probably criminal man Allan Brown I just hope that the next time Brazil do a clean up... you are in it!!!
Sincerely,
Robert M.

Sincerely,
Robert M.

Now come there "Robert", it's actually Roberto, we all can see that, because your english is s**t as well. Forrest has explained himself before, for one, he was shot in the head in viet nam, and his story about his boat is very believable, he even wrote the U.S. consulate, not to mention, that kind of s**t is not an infrequent occurrence in brazil. When you pay people salaries of "miseria", 200 to 500 dollars a month, they'll "supplement" their income any old way they can, and many brazilians just LOVE to stick it to gringos, many actually think we're "stupid". Quite an amazing ideology, but that's what you'll get from the masses in brazil that either haven't had any education, or have been educated in the public schools.
If you can't proof you loose !!!

They don’t call you BO-s**tTER for any reason, do they?
By the way, what is your immigration status in Brazil BO-s**tter? smilies/smiley.gif
Interesting fact that a Brazilian writer mentioned here in this site, that Allen had warned the police authorities in Joan pessoa that he was kind of crazy and would blow up the place. So that supports what was documented in the police file reports in Joan Pessoa. So I ASK YOU STUPID f**kING BO why do you think he go himself in trouble ???
Do you have any idea (you stupid f**k) where he would be if this had happened in the US? Huhhh you stupid f**k?
What you need BO is a good ass kiking... pick a place and I 'll do the travelling! Fair enough isn't it Mr. Macho...laugh.
If a small thing has the power to make you angry, does that not indicate something about your size?

never said to any one i was crazy , said i was crazy to believe in the law in Brazil

have found that believing in the police of Brazil and the navy is the stupidest thing i have ever done .

20IP2003000326 . #0430100/00008/04 # 10421-000.032/2004-40 then ask yourself how can the navy Brazil claim you abandon the boat when i showed them my deportation papers , and and they told you where place it at anchor , then called you wife and the captain to tell them the Brazilian flag had to be as big as the American flag on the boat .and then claim it did not have safety and NAV equipment on board , and then the next time say it was in danger of sinking .
LIES ALL LIES SPAM FROM THE MOUTHS OF BRAZILIAN GOVERNMENT WORKERS
to me you write like a Brazilian trying to cover up his own gladiolus maxims with to poor poor pitiful me song and dance all over again .

a true sailor how many times around, how many times across the pond and back. through the canals and through the straits of Magellan

if you want to dance come to me not to some one else , like wars are fought by men to afraid not to fight . i believe some people just need killing .

I started reading this website looking for news about my country and surprisingly found these one where is full of people who hates my country and my nationals. Would you say we hate the United States and the Americans? No! We don't go to a website which specifically reproduces news abou the USA and keep nagging at Americans. Who hate who here?

Many of you here don't want nothing also other then to be aching, achy, afflictive, hurtful, painful, smarting, sore to Brazilians. That shows your wanton destruction of anything good about Brazil or Brazilian.

You are catty! Hence our reactions.

There are many definitions of success. If your measuring success monetarily, then I would call myself successful. I'm 41 and don't have to work another day in my life if I chose not to, which I don't choose to, I still work.

Why is it that people think that others can't be successful, rich, etc, because they post on an internet board?? I seriously don't get it. Now, 15 years ago you would never see me spending the time I do on the 'net as I do today, because I was out "hustling" all the time, but I've made my bones. Now I pick and choose my "spots" in which to get involved.

It must be unbelievable to you "Abe" because it's difficult for you to imagine someone communicating with you on a daily, or weekly basis, that has a completely different reality than you.

I'm in aracaju, swing by, give me a ring. My phone number is posted on this site. I'll take you to my apartment, let you check out the house that I'm building on the beach, about 40 days from being completed, will end up costing around 1.2 million reais when it's all said and done, and show you our architectural and engineering plans, as well as a 3-D and animated CD-Rom presenatation of our 3 beachfront housing developments on 63,000 sq. meters that we should start breaking ground within the next 90 days. Come on by, give me a ring, I'm always hospitable. Maybe you can buy one of our properties! smilies/wink.gif
