A fishery in Brazil Fishery products as a source of income and food is the theme of the first meeting of the National Council for Aquiculture and Fisheries (Conape), which began this Tuesday, March 27, at Saint Paul Hotel, in Brazilian capital Brasília.

The meeting includes the special secretary of Aquaculture and Fishery (Seap), Altemir Gregolin, and the president of the National Council for Food and Nutritional Security (Consea), Chico Menezes.

The need to expand the presence of fish in the Brazilian diet will be another topic for debate during the meeting. The consumption of fish is still low in Brazil: it is around seven kilograms per inhabitant per year.

This amount is lower than the 12 kilograms recommended by the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the global average of 16 kilograms per inhabitant, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

Fishermen Co-Op

Fishermen in the Marcílio Dias community, in Rio de Janeiro, who live off fishing in Guanabara Bay, got a new cooperative earlier this month. The investment, US$ 855,000, was made by Brazilian oil giant Petrobras.

The former cooperative was completely redone and expanded with the creation of the Project for Sustainable Development of Marcílio Dias Community. This is the first project of the kind implemented in southeastern Brazil.

The volume of fishery products currently caught by the community is 240 tons a month, which may be processed for the production of canned food and other products, like hamburgers and pies. Around 150 families of fishermen should be directly benefited by the initiative.

Brazil Wants Reduction of Fishing Subsidies to Rich Countries
Written by Keite Camacho
Monday, 18 April 2005

The overexploitation of the fishing sector in the last years has caused a reduction in world fish stocks, especially in the North of the planet, where developed countries are located.

To lessen the problem, as well as to protect stocks of developing nations that still don't have a fully developed fishing industry, Brazil has sent representatives to the World Trade Organization (WTO).

They want to discuss the reform on subsidies and countervailing measures. The idea is to defend the reduction of fisheries subsidies.

"There is an international movement for the decrease of subsidies countries offer for the development of world fishing activity. These subsidies must be eliminated, as per this world understanding, because the high subsidies offered by developed countries to fishing activities, including fleet construction and infrastructure financing, created a super production, a super exploitation with a consequent stock reduction in several regions of the world," explained Minister José Fritsch, of the Special Secretariat for Aquiculture and Fishing (Seap).

Fritsch said that Brazil presented a proposition to WTO that defends a strict subsidy reduction for countries that developed their fishing potential in the past - which means less than 15 countries.

"We have 200 miles of coast which is exclusive Brazilian property. We, as developing countries, cannot be treated the same way as developed ones, because, otherwise, we will be in a totally unequal condition. Rich countries will keep being great fishers, and underdeveloped nations will end up having to allow them to fish in their waters," he said.

Brazilian proposal includes a concession of some type of subsidy for developing nations so that they will be able to strengthen their fishing structure.

"This should last for a predetermined time, and afterwards, no other country will be allowed to invest subsidized resources on sea fishing in the world," explained.

1) 0,50 Reais per day for sufficient cat food for a human.....IS SIMPLY NOT ENOUGH !

2) Brazilian poors replaced fish by.....soyameal, bagasse, straw and chaff.....just as they feed their cattles, chicken and porks !

Ohhhhh...and the 0,50 Reais must not only be sufficient for 3 decent daily meals, but also for clothes, soap and toothpaste.
Electricity and schooling fees such as bus fares must also be included !!!!!

As I said the only one who could do better and cheaper is.....GOD HIMSELF.

Viva Lula, Viva Brazil ! What a great life and luck poor Brazilians have !!!!
