Written by Isaura Daniel

A Brazilian woman flashes her Bolsa Família (Family Grant) card The government of Brazil is going to present its public social policies to the Arab countries this week, in Cairo, the capital of Egypt. The minister of Social Development and Hunger Alleviation, Patrus Ananias, is going to participate on Wednesday, May 2, and Thursday, May 3, in a meeting between ministers of the social area of the Arab and South American countries.

The meeting is part of the agenda for follow-up of the Summit of South American - Arab Countries, a meeting between heads of state of both regions that took place in May 2005 in Brazil. According to the follow-up manager for Summit affairs at the Brazilian Foreign Office (Itamaraty), Ânuar Nahes, this is the first South American and Arab ministerial meeting to discuss the social theme.

"The meeting will be used for exchange of experiences in the social programs developed by the countries involved, which have similar levels of development and problems," stated Nahes, who should accompany the minister on the trip.

One of the Brazilian programs of which minister Ananias is going to speak, according to press material issued by the Ministry for Social Development and Hunger Alleviation, is the Zero Hunger (Fome Zero) program, which is part of the Family Purse (Bolsa Família) program.

It is an income transfer program for impoverished families, which benefits 11 million families in Brazil, and has been mentioned as a model for other countries and international organizations.

According to Nahes, the Zero Hunger may interest the Arabs. According to information disclosed by the Ministry for Social Development, Egypt is one of the countries that has shown interest in the program. The World Bank presented to the Arab country, in 2005, the Family Purse, as well as a Mexican project, as forms to alleviate poverty and promote social inclusion.

The meeting in Cairo will include authorities from 34 Arab and South American countries. Topics to be discussed will include, as well as social programs for the reduction of poverty, other themes connected to the millennium development goals, specified by the United Nations (UN). The targets include from the improvement of primary education to the reduction of global diseases.

Brazilian minister Patrus Ananias is going to participate in the opening of the meeting, on Wednesday, and he will also participate in the discussions during the meeting and the closing, on Thursday.

The special spokesperson for the Zero Hunger at the Ministry, Adriana Aranha, is also going to accompany the minister and will participate, today and tomorrow, in preparatory meetings with specialists.

Currently, there are in Brazil 62 million people benefited by programs promoted by the Ministry of Social Development. The country is renowned for its grave social problems, but now, during the term in office of president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, is also gaining international prominence for the social programs created to fight them.

WHAT ????
written by Forrest Allen Brown, April 30, 2007
What can brazil teach the arabs , about stoping hunger in there own country ????
the avarage caloric intake of a brazilian on the food program is just above the UN starvation level .
and 50 reals a month for food will let the congress and lula try to live on it for a 6 months

I think it is made for people to get so hungry thay will work for almost nothing to eat

and if you are working you are far from what you need to suvrive
by the numbers they give does that not show that 1/3 of all brazilians are on the program

Why is Lula's government meeting with non-democratic dictatorial Arab countries with very different ideas about equality and the place of women in society, and ignoring the only democracy in the Middle East? Another America-bashing party?

Brazil has simply the world highest poverty rate.....when compared to the GDP per capita !

Thus instead of teaching how to reduce poverty.....you should first LEARN.....from others !

Or simply stated how can the worst student in a classroom...teach to others how things should be done ???????
Or stated otherwise, should anyone lessen to the worst student of the classroom ????

Disaster......Guaranteed !
LAUGH.....LAUGH.....LAUGH !!!!

In my view you want to export your corruptions practices, poverty, bad education, insecurity and crimes....lifestyles !!!!

Please please Forrest....dont exagerate !

"and 50 reals a month for food......"

lets do the excercise....:
8 billion Reais annually for 45 millions people, divided by 12 months ! Correct ?
That makes 15 Reais per month, or 0,50 Reais per day !!!!! Certainly not 50 Reais pèer month !
Better yet, there is a cap of 95 Reaisp per month...per family. Meaning much less for a family with many children.

Yessssss Forrest, you are probably one of the student who BOUGHT your basic maths diploma !!!!!

In my view, YOU should quit the race, and go back to basic school !

And your critics toward me is curious because you are certainly as acid as me.....IN YOUR OWN COMMENTS AGAINST BRAZIL AND BRAZILIANS !!!!!!!!

And if you can read better english than you can write, please read what the World Bank chief said in December 2005 :
"Something like 10 percent of the population lives on less than a dollar a day - what we define as extreme poverty. "
Wolfowitz says about 25 percent of the population in the region lives on less than $2 a day.
"It does have, I think, the most severe inequality of any region in the world except for sub-Saharan Africa."

And if you have a problem with his statement, write to him, not me !

In Brazil, 43% of Blacks and 20% of Whites Live Below Poverty Line
Written by Lana Cristina
Saturday, 19 November 2005
The majority of Brazil's poor population is formed by blacks. This is what researchers from the Institute of Applied Economic Research (IPEA) and the United Nations Development Fund for Women (Unifem) discovered.
Their findings appear in a study released Thursday, November 17, on inequality between whites and blacks and between men and women.
The statistics, from 2003, reveal that 20% of the white population was living below the poverty line, while 43% of the black population belonged to this category.....

May be that one too :

Written by Adriana Brendler

Around 14 million people in Brazil live in constant hunger, and over 72 million Brazilians suffer from some type of food insecurity - that is, two in every five Brazilians don't have guaranteed access to food in adequate quantity or quality or with sufficient regularity.

And a special reading to you......Forrest :
