Brazil/US Study Shows the Amazon Emits 1/4 of Planet's Methane PDF Print E-mail

Amazon during the rainy season A study by Brazilian and American scientists just published in the Geophysical Research Letters magazine shows that the Amazon Forest is releasing way too much methane, a gas that is considered the second worst agent responsible for global warming.

Methane is believed to be responsible for almost as much global warming as all other non-CO² gases put together. Scientists call methane 20 times more harmful than carbon dioxide. The Amazon alone contributes with about 23% of the planet's annual world emissions of the gas.

Typically, methane is formed in and released from places that have little oxygen like swamps. During the flood season 20% of the Amazon forest is inundated and it would be natural to expect that the gases would be high at that time. Scientists, however, have found out that methane emissions are higher than expected not only during the rainy season but also during the dry one.

The study was done between 2000 and 2006. The Brazilian researchers from Ipen (Energy and Nuclear Research Institute), who coordinated the work, and their American colleagues from NOAA (National Weather Service) collected air samples from several altitudes starting at 150 meters (500 feet) and going up to 4 km (2.5 miles) using small planes. This study is known as LBA, its  acronym in English (Large-Scale Biosphere - Atmosphere Experiment in Amazonia.

The Brazilian data were compared to measurements obtained in other global stations located across the globe. The study revealed that while the whole world releases 155 parts per billion (ppb) of methane into the atmosphere a year, the Amazon forest alone gives out 35 ppb of the product.

"We need to discover where all this methane is coming from," Ipen's researcher Luciana Vani Gatti, who was involved in the study,  told the website G1."It might be coming from other sources, that we still ignore or the sources that we know emit more gas than we imagined. This is worrisome and we need to investigate more," said the Brazilian scientist.

A second phase of the study with new data should be released later. Researchers are still computing and writing about how important is the Amazon in regards to the release of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

Gatti anticipates, however, that the levels of CO² are higher than expected and are present the whole year around. "We are used to think that we only need to worry about the fires to prevent carbon emission in the forest, but this is not true. We have high rates of emission even during the time there are no fires."

For Gatti, the study shows that the world needs to pay more attention to all sources of gases that are causing global warming. "We cannot limit our thinking to CO². We need a global reorganization on how to live our lives if we want to fight the climatic change," she concludes.

I suppose we better cut down the rainforest and save the planet as quickly as possible.

No,my friend, we shouldnt cut down the rain forest. I think that what Luciana Gatti is suggesting is that we harness the Methane gas and use it for fuel. It is called Long Range Planning and New application to an existing product.

Methane is inflamable and produzes energy. It is worth checking.
Interesting !

Looks like Brazil is polluting far more that it ever recognized, prefering to fingerpoint elsewhere.....as usual !

In my view, there is a simple way to reduce the methane emission : DEFOREST FAR MORE !

I bet you will start doing it, because now world grains prices are higher !!!
That means that Brazil has been lying time and again on the reason for the recent years reduction in deforesation !
The simple truth being that it was no longer profitable to deforest and plant grains.BUT NOW IT WILL BE PROFITABLE AGAIN !

Who bet..for 2008 ?

The Amazon has been around for millions of years, seems to be doing quite well, must be a reason for the methane, part of the eco structure, the bio diversity, probably a slew of bacteria that feed off it.

It is so complex, like string theory, multi dimensional. Turns out that the earth is not flat and that Galaleo was wrong, there is more to the weather than huffing and puffing of the cult of the greenistas.

There is no problem, the problem is the problem.

One must not forget that the Americans need more space to plant crops to produce bio-fuels and Brazil would profit from this too, so the evidence must be taken with a pinch of salt.
If the data are as good as that from the IPCC (the UN climate change outfit), then it's probably pretty worthless and is tainted by the dirty hands of politicos.
ch.c :It was no longer profitable to deforest, but now it will be because of the methane?

Oh guru of economic logic what does the fact that the Amazon being complicit in global warming have anything to do with profitability? Why oh most magnificent one does deforestation become profitable anew. It was always profitable to sell timber, it waa just politically incorrect, after all it was the Amazon that was saving the world from global warming?

A long time ago, I came to know about a Swiss guy who could speak 17 languages. A famous Swiss. Can you name him?

ch.c. you said in another post that you can speak 4 languages. I am challenging you to give us the name of that famaous Swiss.

My dear AES, what do you have in this box named head?
Everybody knows the oxigen in the earth are produced by the seaweed, but we cannot cut down Amazonia.
It´s a property of all brazilian people.
The problem will be solved when Bush stop thinking only in support his post of international power as such as China, because they are in the top of the list of countries that have high emissions of "bad" gas.

AES was sarcastic when he proposed cutting down the rain forest to save the planet!

To AES:
Are you some sort of idiot?

Just so you know, I'm well aware that the Amazon is already profitable for its wood production. But the US report on methane will add support to Bush's desire to cut down the Amazon to plant more bio-crops, if that's what he wants to do. That was my point.
Get it now?

AES is far from an idiot. A wise man (middle aged, though). He loves our country and happy to live here. A positive thinking man.Good to hear his words of wisdom (though I dont agree with him all the time and I dont call him an Idiot when I disagree from his point of view).
